I have some potentially bad news for everyone. A Jamba Juice location by my work replaced their NFC reader with a setup from Toast. There was no indication at all that contactless works nor have I ever seen contactless work at any Toast merchant. I reached out to them on Twitter for comment.

FWIW here's what the customer facing screen looks like. At least EMV works, even if you still have to give your card to them.

Maybe it’s a franchise and not owned and operated directly by the Jamba Juice company. Franchise owners are usually allowed to choose their payment provider, as opposed to locations that are owned and operated directly by the company, all of which usually have the same payment platform. If that’s the case, we’ll continue to see nfc at other Jamba Juice locations.

I hadn't heard of Toast before, but I looked over their site and just about every example shot of equipment still was implying that you'd swipe the card (magstripe reader on the edge of the screen), no mention of EMV or NFC, and even doing a search on the site for NFC or contactless comes up with nothing (although a blog post is saying contactless hasn't really caught on and lumped Chase Pay in with contactless transactions). It's good that there is EMV support in the case of your example, but all of these products seem way behind Square or Clover.

A Google search brings up https://central.toasttab.com/s/article/EMV-FAQ, which indicates that EMV's supported on Ingenico iCMP and MagTek readers. No indication of contactless on photos of the former, though.

Also, I'm thinking https://pos.toasttab.com/blog/the-future-of-restaurant-payment-technology is the post you saw. Since their blog seems to be intended to try to sell restaurants on Toast, I would think they'd be more against contactless instead of just saying to consider choosing a POS that supports it for futureproofing.

Maybe it’s a franchise. Franchise owners are usually allowed to choose their payment provider, as opposed to chains where all locations are owned and operated by the same company and therefore all have the same payment platform.

That's true for some. In my experience, though, Jamba Juice generally mandates the same setup at every location. They're kinda like Jersey Mike's in that respect.

Wow. I've been using Pay for years now, and I can only recall one failure... about 2 months ago, when Costco went 'live' with NFC payments, I tried it and got a failure... then I realized that it was 'user error' - I was trying to use my MC at Costco and they only accept VISA.

Same here. I use Apple Pay all the time and I can only remember 2-3 times where it didn't work.

I went to another Jamba Juice location this morning which had the same sort of setup as I mentioned before. The employee I talked to confirmed that yes, NFC currently doesn't work because "they just got a new system" but claimed that it'll come back soon. For what that's worth anyway.

(BTW they're using Quick Chip per the transaction log on my Diners Club MC, $15 cryptogram amount. I wonder if that's the case for other Toast merchants too.)

Trying to figure out where to place my phone on the terminals at Food Lion...

I am finding that to be a major problem when using Apple Watch for Apple Pay. A lot of those terminals are huge (in size) and they make you play mine sweeper with your arm to find the part of the terminal that reads that NFC - very annoying.

Yeah that is something that could definitely be improved. With some units you're supposed to hold your device over the plastic on an edge. On other's (like Trader Joe's) I put my device right in the center of the display.

A standard should put them in the center of the display and make use of the display to draw a shape showing where to place your device. A circle, maybe some text, a target, something but make use. Older or more basic POS devices are less difficult since they are typically smaller physically.

To me, I feel like the standard is putting the device over the middle of the display. The ones that require you to do it elsewhere tend to have signage/symbols indicating as such.

And that doesn't happen only on large sized POS terminals. I used to have the same problem on the small portable Ingenico move 2500 POS terminals when merchants started using them here in Mexico in 2017, until I figured out that the move 2500s have the NFC reader under the top of the display. I was used to always tapping the watch right on the screen, which works flawlessly on most other commonly used models such as the Verifone vx 520 or the Ingenico ict 220, but causes no reaction or a read error on the Ingenico move 2500.

There was an employee newsletter that talked about what Target was doing to prepare for 4th quarter. In the newsletter, there was an image that showed accepted payments that included Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay. I’d post an image, but that would violate confidentiality agreements. I’m already overstepping my boundaries just by talking about it lol. I’ll send it to you privately though if you agree not to post it publicly :)
Took a bit longer than expected which is usually how it works and its now working at most of the Targets I went to yesterday February 1st. So the wider roll out is happening now. :) For now only the dots show so the same as the test locations. While this page: https://corporate.target.com/article/2019/01/store-payment-options shows a tweaked display to show tap etc I'm guessing that comes at a later date?

I’m just happy it’s happening!! I love how Target goes as far as putting a picture of the same Verifone terminal itself, LOL!

Cue the obligatory Xzibit meme...

But anyway, it appears that sometimes the "light" indicators aren't always appearing and it still works - I went to the location yesterday that was known working, didn't see the 4 dots at the top, but gave it a try anyway (self-checkout) and it worked.

Basically, I'm treating it at a YMMV so far, and prepared to bail and have the wallet ready if it doesn't work. :)

Did my shopping today, nothing but Apple Pay all day. Happy to see Target add the option. Now we need to get more people using the option. I tell all I can but I am just one person. Ha

I do too. I find myself having many all Apple Pay days. I feel like the US is on the same level as the U.K. now when it comes to Contactless, and soon going to hopefully be on the same level as Canada and Australia.

I wouldn't go that far. It's gotten better, sure, but merchant acceptance is still far below most of the other Western world.

Yeah, even if most of one particular person's shopping is contactless-capable, there's still a lot of people that shop at Walmart, Kroger (and Kroger's other brands), other grocery stores, and plenty of gas stations that haven't turned it on. Most of my day-to-day places are capable now, but I'm not ready to check this off as done yet. :)

I agree. Especially if you add hotels and restaurants to the cocktail, which in the US are two business segments still almost completely free of contactless payment (although a few restaurants in the US do accept apple pay, they usually do so remotely via an app and not on site using contactless). Go to Europe or even Mexico and you can often if not always check in to your hotel or pay your restaurant check using contactless payment, and therefore apple pay. But just not in the US.

Unfortunately, in the US and Mexico contactless is still NOT a standard form of payment like in Europe. In the US, chip or magstripe is the standard while contactless is still a plus offered by merchants that want to attract more customers and more than 90% of the customers still don’t really use it. In Mexico EMV chip is the standard and contactless is not even on the map yet, so people don’t really use it and therefore although nearly half of the merchants (including gas stations and restaurants, as opposed to the US) have terminals ready and working for contactless, the employees at many of those merchants don’t even know how to accept it. And, of course that half of the merchants excludes almost all of the country’s large retailers since only two of them have their contactless capable POS machines actually enabled to accept contactless payment.

I feel like it'll probably have to be made mandatory by the card networks to have any shot at being 100% accepted. And even then, real-world acceptance will likely still be lower considering how many places don't let you use the terminal yourself.

Really, Visa/MC need to bite the bullet and offer something like a 20-30bps decrease in interchange for all contactless transactions. Many of the holdouts will probably be less objecting of the technology if they'll actually save money from it.

When I go to Disney World I can go the whole day with paying for things only with my watch. I remember thinking that I wished I could do that in regular life now and now we're actually getting there.

I like that too, we used our watches at Disney 3 years ago when visiting. Still needed the Magic Band to open the room door and get in the gate but maybe they will adjust that over time if they have not already.
