Until you go to Walmart and have to use Walmart Pay.

Well, with Home Depot and HEB on board they’re getting closer to being the only major retailer not accepting contactless/apple pay in the US and pressure on them to enable it will start to build up. That was what happened in Canada around 2020 at the same time as the covid pandemic hit, and walmart ended up budging there.

There is still Hobby Lobby and Winco, among other smaller ones.

Winco has an even further restriction that they only accept debit. Fine for a lot of people but not to lose out on rewards for many.
WinCo notoriously hates cards and pretty much only accepts debit because of customer demand. I'd expect Walmart to turn NFC on before they do (and I don't really expect Walmart to, either).

But they just used Covid as an excuse for Canada and that the US “didn’t need it” because there’s already “Walmart Pay” sigh.

It wasn’t just that. I heard they were very heavily criticized on social networks and everywhere because they literally became the only retailer in all of Canada not accepting contactless payments.

Furthermore, it’s not just Canada: Walmart has a presence in 20+ countries and only refuses to allow contactless payments in two (US and Mexico). They do accept them everywhere else.

If anyone didn't see the news, Apple Pay is accepted by close to 95% of retailers.

We still need Hobby Lobby to get on board. And a lot of hotels and restaurants as well, before it is considered to be everywhere.

And car rentals, where not only they demand a physical card, but also require it to have the numbers on it (meaning they sometimes reject the Apple Card).

I think this depends on the company but I haven't had to run my card in person for a rental in a while.

Also, if you sign up for their loyalty program, they just run your rental CNP anyway, no card required. Not the same as accepting Apple Pay but you can at least use the Apple Card.

It does depend on the company. And at most if not all of them you can get away with paying the rental with apple card if you can skip the counter. However, if you do have to stop by the counter they’ll often reject the apple card either on the grounds that it has no numbers on it or that the number from the chip card doesn’t match the virtual card number. This is because they’re taking the credit card as a second form of ID. Nonetheless, the policy is outdated since the current trend is for more and more cards to come without numbers printed.

Walmart stores of USA will survive the pressure to resist to turn on contactless and Apple Pay for the next 10 years to 20 years.

I think that’s more likely to happen with walmart stores in Mexico than in the US. Contactless is used a lot more in the US than it is in Mexico, where still 80% of the people pay in cash (with over 90% in purchases under the equivalent to $25), down from 82% right in the middle of the covid pandemic, and even most of the few who use a card still insert it.

I think they will cave in 5 years. By that point 80% of people will be tapping cards or phones. It's already 50% now.

I think Walmart Mexico is the one that could survive another 10-20 years without budging, given the abuse of cash that still occurs in Mexico (80% cash usage now, down from 82% right in the middle of the pandemic).

I just saw a tweet that said Regal Cinemas now have contactless payments in some locations. Has anyone been able to use Apple Pay at Regal? I hope it's a rollout.
