I have no inside information, but I'm wondering if Mr. Bombich is going to be able to accomplish this without Apple's help and blessings.

I said "help and blessings" because I'm thinking that Apple is never going to grant such things, because they specifically DO NOT WANT the sealed system partition to be "clone-able".

Having said that, I'm thinking (again, with no inside knowledge) that this issue MIGHT be "breakable"... as in "jailbreak".

But... if it does become possible to jailbreak the sealed system volume, I don't think Bombich will ever incorporate such a break into his software -- even if he could.

So... for the foreseeable future... no bootable clones of OS 11 and later on the m-series Macs ...

Again, only speculation, and I would be happy to be proven completely wrong.

I think this is key. Apple seems increasingly keen to vertically integrate all security aspects. My feeling is it could happen but they might even bring the ability to do so in-house into the actual OS.

I wasn’t throwing shade on Mr Bombich, an extremely clever fellow whose product CCC I have appreciated for some years. If your suspicion is correct there are implications for so many Mac users. I for instance run a CCC clone of my iMac SSD every day at 10.30, it gives me insurance against disaster or (more likely) some horrendous blunder of mine; it’s so easy to boot from the clone and reverse clone to the computer. But not in the future you envisage. Let’s hope for some neat workarounds.
