I wish the weight was cut down a bit, it is a tad on the heavy side and if you are holding it up for an extended period it does get tiresome. But I guess we will all just have to use it more and beef up our forearms :D

I think it's just a tradeoff.

It has to be this large and heavy to be what is is. The only way it could be light with the materials we have would be to compromise it's

utility (obviously)

Just have to work around it.

OP obviously never used a 17" MBP with one hand as a giant iPod.

Someone needs to lift some weights. Hint: start with 1 pound weights, I believe they make those weights for old ladies. =p

What do you mean exactly. You are standing holding it entirely in one hand? If so, Why?

Rest it on a table, in your lap, etc...

Aside from that, it weighs less than a Harry Potter Hard cover that I have seen 10 year old girls managing, so I don't think many people will have that much issue with it's "massive" weight.

Exactly.

oh dear God, here we go. some people will be complaining about how big and heavy the iPad is. and then some people will complain because how small the iPad's screen is after listening to the complainers who said the unit was too big.

^5.

There is no product that will satisfy everyone. The iPad is the way it is now after Steve scrapping so many other concepts. Just accept it and live with it.

This thing used to weigh 2lbs, which is 33% more than an iPad.

We got the 16gig and it doesn't feel to heavy even after an hour or so. Much easier than carrying around my Macbook Pro.

I HOPE some people in here can relax and realize, some iPad owners have at least 1 ONE negative feeling towards it.
My issue isn't that you have a negative feeling towards it. It's that you have an unrealistic expectation of being able to hold it for an extended time with one hand.

I agree and makes me wonder why Apple didn't make the iPad 8 ounces (1/2 lb)
Are you being sarcastic? The iPhone weighs 5 oz. You expect Apple to design a 10" tablet and only add an additional 3 oz? Ives is a damn fine designer, but he's not a miracle worker.

Seriously, guys. Several times as much glass as the iPhone, a unibody aluminum enclosure, and twice as much space spent on batteries...it's going to weigh more. Have you looked at the teardowns? This thing is half empty space as is.

Weights and Measures fail!

A can of Coke is 12 fl oz., which is a unit of volume, not weight.
True, but it's awfully close. An ounce of water weighs 1.04 ounces, so a liquid ounce and an ounce of mass are pretty darn close. A 12 ounce can of water would weigh ~12.5 oz. plus the weight of the can, which is probably around 1/2 oz.

Coke would weigh more (about 5% more, iirc), of course, since it's loaded with sugar. Maybe about 13.5 oz.

So the correct statement would have been:
"Fer cryin' out....it weighs 1.5 pounds--24 ounces. Less than 2 cans of Coke.." not "The same as..."

I've got to say, after using this thing for awhile, its starting to get a bit awkward to hold, I'm not finding it very easy.

I think it's because weight "feel" is all about density, not weight. Trade paperbacks are two or three times as thick as an iPad, so they feel lighter.

ding! ding! winner winner winner winner.

I have a 3.5lb tablet pc that I've been using for the past 3 years and the weight, poor battery life, and fan noise are my biggest knocks against it. It'll be interesting to see how the iPad feels in my hands when I get a chance to hold it. The iPad has less ways to hold and adjust to than a larger hard cover or trader paperback too.

when they change to a plastic back, it will be much lighter. and they will change it like all their other products...they should've just started with plastic and sold them for less. 2.0 should be the one

I hope Apple makes an iPad Mini. Just imagine how amazing that would be. I love the iPad, but an iPad a quarter of it's size would be absolute killer!

I hope they don't and think that is pointless.
