Why would Apple accept trade-ins for the M2 MBA and M2 Macbook Pro (13") if it doesn't plan to introduce M3 versions?

Could this be confirmation that we will indeed see M3 at the show? Possibly Mac Pro (for people who want to trade in their M1 Ultra Studio)?

I've long speculated the following:
  • Apple has been manufacturing 3nm M3 chips at TSMC since volume production started last year
  • Apple wants to update Apple Silicon yearly
  • Apple wants to introduce the 15" MBA with a new M3 SoC
  • Due to constraints and unforeseen circumstances, Apple hasn't been able to update Apple Silicon on time but going forward, they will be more aggressive in catching up to their intended schedule.
I felt strongly about my speculations in the past. Then rumors from every source said the 15" MBA will launch with an M2 SoC. However, this report firmly suggests that M3 will be unveiled at WWDC.

Apologies for starting another thread on the same topic (better than 8 vs 16GB ram threads, right?) but I felt like this report was substantial enough to warrant a new thread.

Not sure it indicates an M3 introduction to these models - could just be for people that want the 15" Air, and perhaps they're finally ending production of the 13" MBP. Dunno.

Excited to see what they do at WWDC - other than the 15" Air, nobody seems to have any idea of what to expect on the Mac side.

Here are quotes from Gurman's article linked in the Tweet:

Moving on to the Mac, Apple has several new models in the works: a 15-inch MacBook Air, an updated 13-inch MacBook Air, an entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, a refreshed 24-inch iMac, the first Mac Pro with in-house chips and updated high-end MacBook Pro models. All of these should go on sale either this year or in early 2024. There are also two Mac Studio follow-ups planned, but their timing is less clear.

At least some of the new laptops will be announced at WWDC, I’ve been told. But there’s a big caveat: The models coming in June probably won’t boast major new M3 chips. Instead, they’ll run something in line with the current M2 processors.

New Mac models in this vein started showing up in developer test logs this past week. That includes what appears to be a larger MacBook Air. The logs show machines running chips with an eight-core CPU — split between four high-performance cores and four efficiency cores — and a 10-core graphics processor. They also include 8 gigabytes of memory.

I highlighted the two contradicting parts.

Gurman says at least some new laptops will be announced. Some means more than one. But what other laptop is there to announce if there's no M3? All the existing laptops have been updated to M2 already. New colors for the 13" M2 MBA?

In addition, notice the word "probably". Gurman's source doesn't actually know for sure that there's no M3.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it?

No, “some” does not mean more than one.

Though the rumours have pointed to an M2 15", the rumours have been all over the place, and already wrong twice about a release at an April event, and press release in April/May, so I wouldn't put a lot of stock in finer details for this rumour. A WWDC launch for the 3rd generation of Mac chips a year after the second fits better IMO (especially if they've been producing chips since last year). Even if yields are low they've had months to build up inventory, and could give themselves another month of production if they announce the computers for a late June/July launch. It would also mean they avoid an annoying situation with the 15" being launched with an M2 in June, then the 13" getting updated with M3 and/or OLED a few months later.

Some’ can refer to an unspecified plural number of countable nouns

  • some books
  • some girls
  • some grains of sand
Some’ can also refer to an unspecified amount of an uncountable noun, as in

  • some sugar
  • some water
  • some independence

Inside leak from Gurman are always right, until now they were/was 100% accurate so 15" its coming for sure at WWDC

It’s going to be one year since the M2 MacBook Air was launched and we seriously think Apple is gonna launch the 15 inch MacBook Air with M2? Like I said, Apple is messing with Gurmans sources, it will launch with M3. Looks like the remaining entry level laptops such as the 13 inch Air and Pro will also get updated to M3.

rade-ins for M2 for another M2?
No more implausible then the M3 rumor. We really don't know and everything we post here is pure speculation. Point to consider, how many people here have bought a MBP/Mini/MBA/iMac and wished they got something else? So why not give them an option?

Gosh it's hard to tell what's going on. It would make sense for the Mac Studio to get M2 Pro/Max. But this goes down the whataboutism rabbit hole. What about the Mac Pro? Accepting trade-ins for the MacBook Air M2 signals a new model will be forthcoming. But M3? That would be weird having an M2 Mac Studio announced whilst unveiling M3. My brain hurts.

Here's what I think:

M2 Max/Ultra Mac Studio
M2 15" Air

13" Air trade-in for people who want to get a larger-screened Air.
13" MacBook Pro trade-in because they're finally discontinuing it.

No Mac Pro until at least next year, with M3.

I agree, and sometimes I find it hard to believe they didn't see this coming, but that's the only thing that makes sense: when they first came up with Apple Silicon, they had a "we'll figure it out" attitude toward the Mac Pro, now they're realizing they can't make the Mac Pro modular without seriously compromising the performance you get with an SoC. SoCs and Mac Pros don't mix; it undermines the entire philosophy of the Mac Pro. So they're still trying to figure it out (or considering making the Studio the top-end Mac desktop).

Obviously I have no idea if any of this is true, but to me it's the only thing that can explain why we still don't have an AS Mac Pro after AS being out for three years now.

That certainly goes against a recent rumour of an M3 13" Pro model, though with how all over the place it's been lately who knows...
