Hi, I considered the Caldigit TS3+ last year but ended up not getting it due to charging issues some users reported as well as its color (don't like dark gray and they no longer make the silver version). How is the new Anker Docking Station PowerExpand Elite 13-in-1 compared with the TS3+ and the upcoming TBT3-UDZ?

Has the latest Mac OS updates helped with the issues with the OWC dock (e.g. waking up from sleep)? I would have a 4-drive Thunderbolt enclosure, another USB drive, various USB devices, and a 30" Cinema Display (I already have the Apple dongle for the Mini DisplayPort that works well).

It has the Mini DisplayPort that would require one less dongle for me.

I saw the new iVANKY USB 3.0 Docking Station but it is not Thunderbolt.

Anybody else has the problem of blurry, ugly letters with white shadow showing up when connecting a MBP to an external display via a TB3 dock?

Not sure if this is related:

The dock is supposed to be plug and play.

Here is a screenshot:

Under Windows 10, the letters do not look this bad but not as nice looking as direct connection to the TV from the MBP 16" 2019. Even not at 4K, I hear noisy fan from the MBP.

How is Plugable's customer services? I asked them some questions about the TBT3-UDZ last week but there is no reply.

Why different TB3 docks have different recommended TB3 cable lengths? I think Caldigit TB3+ has the shortest 0.7m recommended length.

I am buying a CalDigit TS3 Plus for my upcoming MacBook Pro 16 2019. Now the TS3 Plus only supplies up to 85W power, will it be okay if I have the MacBook Pro connect to the power using the original power cable and then have it connect to TS3 Plus...?

The Caldigit seems to work great w/ my 16" MBP but I'm light on peripherals - webcam, stereo speakers, ethernet, 1 monitor, keyboard, mouse, misc. storage.

No problem with that, just connect the power plug first, then the dock, so it runs off the power adapter.

So based on my experience, the HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 (120W) works nicely and delivers 100W over PD. The dock fan is quiet, but you will not be able to hear it anyway over the jet engine that is the 16in macbook (when connected to external display). :)

Classic limitation of only single usable DisplayPort (due to MSC not supported by the macbook), but I am still running two external displays on the docking station, one over DisplayPort and one over USB-C. You might need to install Ethernet drivers separately, and the power button on the dock does not work.

Still, for the price (especially if you can get a used or refurbed one on ebay) it's unbeatable.

Why did you chose it over Caldigit TS3 Plus? I am using the Caldigit and it works flawlessly.

Well, like i wrote, it provides 100W over PD. It provides all the ports i need (i could use the SD reader occasionally, but I do have a USB travel dongle for that anyway) and it was 150€ less than the caldigit :) And the disadvantages are not really disadvantages when compared to the Caldigit, since the caldigit has no power button at all and has only one displayport anyway...

Looking for a Macbook Pro 2019 16" solution. My requirements are that it charges faster than it discharges and that I can connect 2 screens (1x 4k and 1x 1080p), 1x ethernet, and 2x usb peripherals. Which dock would you recommend of the available options? It's so hard to decide.

Any Thunderbolt 3 dock would work. Most charge at 85 watts and that's enough unless you are utilizing 100% of your cpu and gpu for long periods of time and even then, it'll take many hours for it to deplete.

Ok thanks, I'll probably go with the CalDigit TS3 Plus then for $210.

Has anyone found a reputable docking solution that can deliver 96 watts or 100 watts of power for use with the new 16" MBP?

Making this first post a Wiki so it can be updated with links in the future.

----

AUKEY CB-C71 (AKA: Unity Link PD III 8-in-1 USB-C Hub with 100W PD)
Warning: Only provides 60W, despite advertising 100W passthrough

CalDigit TS3 Plus (TS3+)
Provides 87W via firmware update

Dell WD19TB
Only provides 90W
Note: See #266 and #287

Plugable TBT3-UDZ
"a Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C Docking Station that offers 100W power delivery"
Note: announced at CES 2020, not yet available

Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650 (GPU-650WOC-TB3)
Provides 100W power, but is an eGPU not really a docking solution
Note: Only the OC model provides 100W power, the non-OC model only provides 87W

Targus DOCK570USZ
USB-C Universal Quad 4K (QV4K) Docking Station with 100W Power Delivery
Note: See #130 and #146

I'm confused about the Pluggable TBT3-UDV dock, I just bought it and the box says 60W power delivery to the host. So, this doesn't work for a MBP 16" at full CPU and GPU load I'd imagine. I guess I should have checked the specs, but can we take it off the list if it doesn't do the thing we are looking for?

Their own website notes:
16" models will charge at a slower rate via the dock compared to the 96W power adapter Apple includes. Depending on the overall system load, the system may use power from the system's internal battery to compensate for the slower charging rate.

Again, first thread is a WIKI.

Can you able to run 2 monitors in Mac OS independently or mirror?

Hi

The Dock you want to use is The UDZ model not the UDV. They haven’t released it yet but I think they soon will

The WikiPost has been updated to say the UDZ model only provides 60W; apparently as a new forum user I can't edit it. Can someone update it? (I check this post periodically to see if any options have become available to actually properly charge this now nearly year-old laptop I bought...)

You can run them independently. But not on the two DP ports. You can run one on one of the DP ports and one on the front downstream thunderbolt port (using any adapter to DisplayPort or HDMI or a TB3 or USB-C monitor).

And Ethernet drivers (as someone wrote) work out of the box. Although in ECM mode (which uses more CPU power as it doesn't support offloading). Realtek offers the driver for download but they won't be compatible with BigSur because Apple removed the KPI Realtek used. Ethernet still works but only in basic ECM mode like all the USB-C Hubs with Ethernet out there. The Ethernet is actually wired to the USB Bus and it's the same chipset (Realtek RTL8153) you can find in almost every other USB-C Ethernet device.

The only real drawback of the G2 for me is, that you need Windows for firmware updates. Otherwise, it's a nice and quite affordable Dock with 100W PD and small size. The TS3+ is probably better in most cases, but also almost twice as expensive (depending on country).
