Jamie, I've found an absolutely fantastic pair of headphones for doing monitoring and mixing, AKG s271. These headphones sound gorgeous, very nice crisp sound, with a little bump in the higher frequencies, very good build quality. I can highly recommend them. I just finished a 2.5 hour long classical recording gig and the headphones were awesome, very comfortable to wear the entire time I was recording.

Thank you for the recommendation Sopranino :)

I'm also looking for some decent quality headphones just for mixing if you have any experience that you could share. I have a pair of Mackie HR 624's for my main setup, however I'd like to be able to get an accurate picture of my mixes on the move. I have a budget of around $300 - $400 again

I'm interested in one of the Speck hard-shell case things, as my laptops always take rather a lot of abuse. Trouble is I can't seem to find a distributor in the UK that has anything other than the clear or red variety and I'd rather have one of the more interesting colours... Anyone know where I should try?

Alternatively, anyone in the San Diego area know where I might be able to walk in to a store and buy one? I'll probably be over there in about a month...

I love this thread, lots of good info! I'm wondering, does anyone have comments about the following UPS (backup power) options at the Apple Store?

I am looking for something to protect a new MacBook Pro, but am not sure which option would be best. The first is the prettiest, but the last is the cheapest... perhaps not enough wattage, though? Hmm. I forget the wattage of a MBP; laptops are low power, after all.

EDIT: actually, a MBP probably just needs a good surge protector, not a UPS. Old habits die hard.

Yeah.. the laptop battery will function as the UPS. You just need a surge protector.

Personally I'm going to get this belkin travel surge protector when I get my MBP.

Sennheiser HD25's FTW. If it sounds good on them, it almost always sounds good on the Mackies. Bass may need tweaking of course, but that's true of all cans I think. Industry standard, great for DJ'ing too if that's your thing.

Thanks for the reply Sonic. I was actually checking out a few Sennheiser's today. The HD650's look very nice, pretty damn impressive freq res. Obviously it'll be impossible to do any serious mixing on cans no matter how much money I throw away, so I'll definitely look into the HD25's. I'm sure they're more than acceptable for on the move referencing. Anyway, reliable reviews always mean more than the price tag. ;)

my accessories:

Samsung 245B 24'' Monitor
Apple Keyboard
Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000
JBL Creature white
Crumpler The Slip 15'
Crumpler Wack-O-Phone
Jansport Airlift 2.0 Backpack

and now I am going to buy a sleeve. still dunno which one.

Yeah they're surprising cheap (£125 I think - although it's been a while since I"ve bought some 'cos I get them fixed for free)... and I've had more expensive ones that all sound worse. Easy to fix as they're modular, and you can buy just the new part you need - cups / cable etc...

I got the incase sleeve and i'm really disappointed in its fit on my new MBP. There's too much extra room! Does this not bother anyone? I'd like it to be tighter form fitting, especially since the 15 MBPs don't vary in size acording to specs or anything.

You wil find the best fit sleeve here, www.aussiebag.com

Sadly Amazon.com will only ship that within the US. Amazon.co.uk only stock red and clear, just like the Apple store here.

Speck themselves say they'll ship one (tbh I hadn't noticed they had a proper online store) but the cost is pretty steep, so I'll use that as a last resort.

Fortunately I have a colleague taking a trip to the US next week so I've asked him to pop into the Apple store over there and try to pick one up for me.
