Back in 2008, I remember seeing a 3D interface with the NVIDIA APX-2500. Check it out on YouTube. This was before I saw the WebOS. I believe that is the direction where cell phones will be going. Our current iPhones will look outdated in comparison. That's just how the evolution of technology works. RiM did a very good job with this tablet and should still holds its own even with an iPad 2 release. What a big difference from the underwhelming specs of the BB Torch to this. Hope to see more ONX on their future phones next year. Funny how everyone here thought RiM was going to die out after they brought out the Torch, and they come out swinging and surprising with a Playbook. Now the current iPad is the one that looks more bulky by comparison.

But to Apple dorks, 10 inch screen is perfect for an internet tablet, but a 7 inch screen is useless! LMAO at the blind homerism and insecurity. Stop mooching off your parents and get out more.

There are so many people on this forum that want a 7" iPad it's ridiculous. Throw an Apple logo on it, and it's amazing. Throw a BlackBerry logo on it, and it's appalling.

This is a great moment for BlackBerry, and it will only get better after this. Hopefully with this tablet, more people will want to develop applications for BlackBerry. I wanted to get a BlackBerry again before this announcement, but now I really want to get a BlackBerry. :p

Agreed on the apple comment. It is really nuts how many people would blindly defend something just because it is apple.

I am a big fan of apple (not to say that I am a fanboy) and I own a ton of their products. Just the same, however, I own a windows laptop to compliment the mac (though it is older and the mac was the "upgrade), a blackberry (again upgraded to iphone 3g --> iphone 4) and so on. Apple has great marketing and ads, great products and a great mindset - so it is easy to be a fan of them.

It is also far too easy to extend this to fanboyism

Back on topic: I am excited for all of these new tablets. I would love to find one that is better than the iPad because, whether people admit it or not, the iPad is lacking in many ways. It is a gorgeous piece of hardware that works exactly as advertised (and even better with JB) but having a tablet with usb and hdmi out is a HUGE plus.

The only thing I am worried about is the blackberry OS. I hated the clunky UI and the constant stuttering when I had my run with blackberrys and I am fairly certain that those issues will not be resolved because of they choices they make when building their OS's

I don't understand why people so scream about the hardware specs...

Every hardware will get outdated as soon as it comes out, period.

What good is the 1GHZ dual processor and 1GB ram without good apps and good battery life?

Do we know price? Nope
Do we know how many apps they will have? Nope

Is it possible that this thing will cost more than iPads? Yea... probably. It is for business users.

True multi-tasking? Please... save me from those craps. You really think Tablet can replace laptop for good right now? No...
I rather have a simple multi-tasking that will save my battery.

You should know that today's laptops have better performance with fewer battery consumption than those of years past.

Dual core processors does not run full dual core mode all the time. It automatically throttles depending on the amount of load required from the software. It can run on a single processor if need be. Plust most newer SOC's are built on a 45nm process tech. This saves battery life as its built on a smaller scale requiring less battery power. Its also cheaper too.

Modern day smartphone out power those on laptops from a couple of years ago. That is the beauty of technology. We've already surpassed the graphics power of a PS2 on our mobile phones. Its only a matter time time before we break the Xbox 3/ PS3 graphics power all on a mobile phone.

You're right - for a mobile device running on a battery, it's better.

Most tablets are moving towards the dual core processor field. Samsung's Orion chip (which will most likely be in the next iPad) is already in "select customers' hands" according to Samsung.

I find it extremely weird that rim will release wi-fi model first before 3G model. Isn't this for business customers? Do all the business customers just stay in one place where they can get wi-fi? Smart. ...

$300 netbooks have dual cores and a gig or better of ram. Apple does good enough not best. Because if they did best your buying/upgrade cycle will be longer. I love my ipad but its a disappointing.

Didn't RIM say the idea is to tether through your Blackberry phone?

No doubt the carriers will want a piece of that action, though.

Right there with you. Neither AT&T or Verizon is going to allow a tether for free whether you have a Blackberry or not. Hahahaha.

Not sure why that matters - not running code that you're not using is always going to be better in terms of battery life.

As for Apple using Orion in the iPad, I'd be interested to see your sources.

It tethers via bluetooth and it's not for web access. The wifi is for standalone web access.

I finally got around to watching the RIM PlayBook presentation, and I have to admit, it hit me where it hurts on the iPad.

Mind you, I am an avid Apple supporter, but there are a few things that Apple needs to do for its customers.

  1. The new iOS has to be able to share an internet connection with another iOS device, either via Bluetooth or ad-hoc Wi-Fi. Paying a separate $30 a month for my iPad 3G when I already have an imposed data plan for my iPhone 4 is ridiculous. I wouldn't be using both simultaneously. And my Wi-Fi-only iPad feels like a fish out of water without an internet connection, now that more and more apps rely on it, use iAds, Game Center, and OpenFeint. One-to-one device tethering is not something for the wireless carriers to ever decide or have control over. This is top priority.
  2. I believe it's in the SDK now, but all apps should have video-out capability, either mimicking what's on the LCD, or outputting something different altogether.
  3. If we're sticking with the 30-pin dock connector, I don't know if all pins are being used, but assign HDMI to a few of those and create an appropriate cable or port for it.
  4. I'm in full assumption that the next-generation iPad will have at least a front-facing camera, and hopefully a rear one. To that end, FaceTime needs to be able to be run in the background while you're in an application, and also support screen sharing, shared remote control, and file transfer.
  5. The iOS Lock Screen needs to be revamped completely. In the beginning, the customized image with the time and date was cute back in 2007, but we're more productive than that and deserve more without hacks to the iOS. Recent messages and notifications, owner information if lost, and weather, stock and/or other dynamic information from an app you specify should be able to display as soon as you wake the iOS device up.

I agree !!! also if I'm working on my iPad and get a text on my iPhone I should be able to view and answer it from the iPad. This is where the PlayBook shines and is also one of the reasons I didn't buy this generation iPhone. My Droid X let me me get texts on my Mac.

This is where the PlayBook shines

As a quick reality check, the Playbook has yet to "shine." Making comparisons on a device that is many months away from introduction to a device that exists today and will have revamped software in 2 months is a little unfair.

No doubt the Playbook is a nice device but this takes me back to a conversation I had with a friend many years ago. She had purchased an original iMac in 1997 and was looking to upgrade computers about 4 years later. She went to Best Buy and bought a PC because it was "so much better" than her (4-year-old) iMac. It didn't occur to her that they were also regularly updating iMacs over that 4 year period.

battery life is key for me, and dual core 1ghz doesn't yell efficiency to me. ill probably happily keep enjoying my ipad.

While I agree with most of what you said, if you already have an iPhone why do you need a camera on the iPad ? Wouldn't it be easer to use Facetime on your iPhone or desktop / laptop ? (Apple said they were opening up Facetime for use on other devices).

Not everyone who owns an iPad owns an iPhone, too.

The iPad has already shown to eat into the sales of netbooks and notebooks.

They want to push FaceTime. It's their baby, and it's crazy easy to use. No reason not to have it on all devices.

Lastly, every other tablet out there now has front-facing cameras. If the iPad 2 skips out while every other next-gen phone and tablet have it, it's going to hurt sales, there's no doubt about it.

Is this thing even real? It says it comes out 4-6 months.

+1

Everything looks good at the marketing hype concept stage. Let's just see what happens when it is released. I've owned several RIMM products and lets just say they are very utilitarian. They get the job done, but not much else.

Who knows, perhaps the playbook will be amazing. I'm just wondering how RIMM is going to match the AppStore.

I don't own an iPhone either, but the poster I was replying to does.

I disagree with your last. Because every device being manufactured has to have a camera, it shouldn't make a difference if you have three devices with cameras on your possession instead of four. Since Apple is going to open Facetime to everyone, you should be able to use your cigarette lighter to Facetime.

So, everyone is comparing to Blackberry playbook that is coming out a year later ipad has been released?
Blackberry playbook? Do you know about price? Do you know about any firm release date? Do you know about what apps will have? Will it have angry birds and netflix apps?

Most importantly, will it move and operate as smooth as iPad?

So, why in the hell you all talking about a device that doesn't even have final specs? Most importantly, why are you all comparing it to iPad?

Rim is dreaming. No way AT&T and Verizon will let them do this. If they do, they will want your soul for tethering. Oh... You want tethering? 30 dollars more please.
