and the ipad is just a big ipod touch
They would have been better served, imo to keep win7, as many people are clamoring for a tablet computer running a full blown OS.
Looks like HP will be releasing the slate running webos instead of a win7

I think this is a huge mistake, they're trying to compete with apple using an OS that has no apps. They would have been better served, imo to keep win7, as many people are clamoring for a tablet computer running a full blown OS.
Which is a bad idea. Who, exactly, is "clamoring" for such a device running a full OS? The usual gang of misguided naysayers on MR?
I can't tell from all the iPad excitement.
I think it is a good move by HP.
A slate doesn't need a full OS, because of it's not a full PC. In the past many manufactures ( like Samsung ) tried to put a full Windows XP in their MID devices and they failed.
I think it needs something specially made to satisfy the requirements of this format.
However, and a little bit offtopic,
Webos is a funny name... In spainish Webos is like another way to write Huevos which means "eggs" or more colloquially spoken, is the word for men "balls"![]()

WebOS is certainly a good OS, but it lacks apps, I also think developers have fled the platform to a great extent and HP has a lot of work to try to lure them back. I also think its a mistake to try to compete with apple on apple's strengths.I think it is a good move by HP.

People do want a tablet with a flow blown OS and if HP opted for win7,
They DID opt for Win7. And it turned out to be lame, which is why they scrapped it. Unless you know of some other, more effective way of shoving a "full-blown" OS into a tablet so it won't suck.

Maybe Android . . .
People only THINK that they want a tablet with a full-blown OS. But they really haven't thought things through. Taking an OS and UI designed for notebook/desktop PCs and putting them on a touchscreen device is not going to be as useful as they think.People do want a tablet with a flow blown OS and if HP opted for win7, the tablet would have access to hundreds of thousands of applications, where as with the webos, only a handful of apps.
How exactly would you implement a Windows tablet that has comparable dimensions, weight, battery life, and price to the iPad? Include with that all of the things that detractors claimed about the iPad (lack of USB and webcam). And include a user experience/interface optimized for touch.I believe HP would have been better served to differentiate their products with apple's, highlighting the strength and advantages of running windows on a tablet, instead of basically copying apple. It seems however they are more content with creating pale imitations, i.e., HP envy.
