A short term printing solution for Mac owners, at least until this shortcoming is resolved by a software update, might be found in an Automator workflow that scans your inbox and sends messages to the printer. Alternatively, an Applescript attached to a rule in Mail app might do the trick.

Get a printer that receives email. Email document to printer. Print document.

That's how we do it where I work, at least. I'm not much of a printer person, but this seems like a way to go.

+1

As the description says: "Direct printing to networked printers (no computer required!), and also to Mac and Linux shared printers. No companion software installation necessary."

Call that a WIN. :)

I was just flipping through the iPad apps and there are many different printing utilities out there already. I expect we will see more and more.

I'm not sure I would want the USB methodology.

I'm thinking more of all apps print to a standard format, possibly a format called WiFi PDF, and then all print drivers are modified to print WiFi PDF feeds.

What I am thinking is making printing printer independent as much as possible.

I believe this is the best scenario, though trying to get all the printer manufacturers on the same page might be difficult.

why would you want to print anything?

convert the docs into PDF, JPG, Word, etc. and send it via email, etc.

Paper is obsolete and that is one of the point of using an iPad.

LESS PAPER.

Did you bother to read the thread before you posted? Not only was your question answered, but your "solution" as well.

has anyone used a 'printer' app yet?

If so how did it work? What things could you print with it(pages, numbers, email...)?

Print over wifi?

I have an HP Officejet printer that I connect to using wifi.

My question is, can the iPad connect to the printer through wifi and print documents off of pages and/or websites?

I am hoping it is a yes. Still trying to find reasons to justify a purchase.

No it can't. You need a computer to do that, and the ipad is, well, not a computer. It's a giant ipod touch.

The iPad is not a computer? It may not have a full fledged mac os, but to say it is not a computer is foolish. An iPhone is a computer. There is no reason they couldn't have made something like this happen.

There are several apps that allow printing, the ipad doesn't do it out of the box so to speak. Have not tried them so I can't give props to any in particular.

Well a calculator is a computer in the native sense, but the ipad is not a computing device in the sense that we expect from a device that claims to be a netbook (computer) replacement.

HP has an app for iPhone that will print photos and it works great. So maybe they will come out with one for the iPad that will work with documents.

I use two apps, print magic and print n share. They both work great with my home HP Laser printer.

I use the app "ePrint" from the App Store to print from my iPhone. Works great! Prints effortlessly and flawlessly to my HP wireless printer. No reason why this app shouldn't work on the iPad also.

YMMV.

iPad printing via airport extreme?

I have wifi in my place via the airport extreme. The extreme has an open usb port. Since ipad works off wifi, if i connect a printer to the open usb port , can i print somehow directly from the ipad?

Short answer: No.

The iPhone OS has no built-in print functionality. There are a couple of apps that take care of this themselves (such as HP's "iPrint",) but they are not general purpose printer drivers. But these only do whatever printing, to whatever devices they support, solely within the confines of the one app. HP iPrint, for example, will print pictures from your digital camera photo roll to an HP wireless printer. That's it.

Yeah, with "real" productivity apps now built in, Apple really should build a print stack in to the base OS.

I can't understand why they came out with ipad version of pages and dont add a print function. Apple store guy told me i would have to email myself the document and then go print it on my desktop mac. that to me seemed ridiculous.

Printing needs drivers.

The base iPad only has 16GB storage, and storing drivers on it is a ridiculous concept. Don't assume printing is something easy to accomplish - it's not with such limited space.

Anyone printed yet?

Has anyone used the Print or Print Central from Eurosmartz or any other print 3rd party app to print yet?

I looked through the app store but didn't find any printing apps. I had one for the iPhone. But it really wasn't that great. Didn't even try and out it on this yet.

Have not been allowed to touch it long enough to check it out. That getting on the wrong plane and ending up 3 hours away kinda mucked up our delivery time, which meant she has had enough of it to SHARE yet! LOL!!

My mindset has to change a bit since the file storage is not a universal box that any app can access......
