iPad Wireless Printing App

Hi there,

just found this thread and thought I'd share my experiences with an app called Cortado Workplace (http://itunes.apple.com/app/cortado-workplace/id318124129?mt=8).

This app works perfect for WiFi printing on iPhone and iPad; though not yet graphically optimized for the latter. If you have your printer connected to your AirportExpress or Extreme and have logged on to your WiFi with your iPhone/iPad, this app will automatically find your printer - no need to have your Mac running, it's not going through your desktop machine. You can print e-mail attachments (needs forwarding to your Workplace account) and all documents you have uploaded to the storage that comes with the app.

Works fine on my devices, give it a try - it's free, so no harm done if you don't like it.

Im correct in saying that 4.0 is for touch/iphone/ipad .

Will this update be free of charge , and also when is it rumored to come out is it gonna launch with iphone or will it be out before that for the touch and ipad

It will be free of charge for iPad and iPhone. iPod Touch will likely cost $5. iPad gets it for free because it was released just before the new OS and it was in that agreement from the other day. It might come out before the new iPhone, but it would probably be a week or less. Last time it was only a few days.

I think Apple might make the iPad OS 4.1 while the iPhone and iPT will be OS 4.0. There were some ad logs on page two that had a 4.0 and 4.1 showing up. Why else have a 4.1 if not for the iPad? Not sure how they would do their version numbering in that case though. I just know that the iPad has an extra point-one over the iPhone.

So there will be no update till June , i was kinda hoping for it to be out in the next 3-4 weeks

Printing needs drivers.

The base iPad only has 16GB storage, and storing drivers on it is a ridiculous concept. Don't assume printing is something easy to accomplish - it's not with such limited space.

If they can come up with something as small as an iPod touch, with 64GB storage, and something like a MacBook with 7 hours of battery, and even an iPad, they could invent a way of printing from their devices if they wanted to invest the time in it.

Probably not until July. This is the latest that Apple has held an SDK event. Unless they've got these transitions down to a science, there will be a few more months of beta testing. I should be able to secure a copy from a friend and I'll let you know what I find. It is likely that the 4.0 SDK beta will be released on Thursday alongside OS 4.0 beta firmware, but we'll see.

I've read rumors that Apple might be going to Verizon this fall. It is perhaps possible that they could even hold out until September or October. This would also space out the timing between the iPhone and iPad, which some people say the close proximity of their releases keeps Apple from bringing out a significantly faster iPhone. Apple also bought Intrinsity or whatever that chip company is called since PA Semi employees were bailing. They might need a little extra time for them to finalize their iPhone A4 (or A5?) plans. I can also see Apple wanting to roll the iPhone / iPod Touch events into one. It makes more sense, especially with the iPad opposite of them in the Spring.

This is, of course, somewhat informed speculation and rumors. So, whatever.

the problem with printing are all the printer drivers that would need to be loaded onto the iPad/iPhone. That's a lot of files, updates, and maintenance unless Apple can figure out an easy way for users to load just the driver(s) they need, or somehow upgrade the Airport line of routers to do this for you.

Easily done. Load driver via iTunes just like any doc, pic, video, audio or app file.

But in true Apple style, they probably wouldn't make this the end-user solution because this would be a bit challenging for many novice users. I don't think printer drivers are as easy to deal with as ringtones.

I disagree. Search for your printer brand -- > model -->brings up an install button. No different then searching for apps.

Or they could make it load-on-demand like printer drivers are in Snow Leopard. After all, if you have access to a printer via WiFi, you almost guaranteed also have internet...

Any way to print to wireless printer?

I would like to buy a stand-alone wireless printer, and would like to be able to print to it from the ipad. Is there any printing apps one can download that would allow printing directly to a wireless printer. I know you can print to a shared printer, but I would like to do it directly to the printer without any other computer.

Mroogle is your friend. Covered many times so far...

I'm not asking a general printing from ipad question, but a specific one about printing to a stand-alone wireless printer from a printing app available in the app store.

Again - it's been covered in those threads. As of right now you need a 3rd party app AND a program running on your computer
