I should have asked.

I thought I saw that it was going to be around $20 but I have no idea.

All apple should insist on is that a disclaimer is shown before the app is launched eg apple is not responsible for any incorrect directions and touch here to acknowledge. Then they could use voice prompts.

It's a good thing that it's not voice-prompted since the customer service rep apparently can't even speak english!

True that! ;)

Anyways, even without voice prompts, this will be a large step. The ability to re-route and automatically advance to the next direction will be great. However, I wonder how it will tell you a turn is coming up? A ding?

I've also been in contact with them:
Dear Customer,

Sorry for a litte delay.

It will be within next week.

Best regards,

And yes, the customer service e-mail goes to China so English doesn't seem to be their first language.

It was previously for $20 for west coast. It's going to be west, east, and north america. I'm guessing the full will either be $40 or hopefully they'll discount it.

looks like a great app, but I wonder how much space it'll take up

Depends on how they package their maps; Tom Tom Navigator's maps for Version 6, North America on WinMobile is about 880 MB in size. Map compression technology has come a long way.

Although the website does say U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada, the regions shown shows only the continental North America and Alaska.

So, no Hawaii? I mean, we ARE the 50th state!

End of year for Europe .. we Brits are always last to receive

I'm still wondering whether anyone will receive.... This may just turn out to be Guantanamoed (one of those "never-rejected, never-accepted" apps).

Best regards,

I'll give them credit for at least trying to use proper English over there...haha.

Looking forward to this app.

I don't see the worth of the app on initial looks. It looks like a glorified google maps app, and they're charging for it. Unless it comes with a better interface and voice turn by turn, it's useless. Google Maps does everything it seems to do, and it's free.

Completely agree - I think there will be a lot of disappointed people who buy this expecting it to replace their Tom Tom, only to find it doesn't do turn by turn navigation...

I can see at least some worth in it- the maps are all self-contained in the app, meaning that you don't have to worry about the data connection being active and downloading the maps. Not sure if that will make it worth the price, but especially for people in areas with spotty cell reception I can see it being useful as allowing the iPhone to largely replace a traditional GPS.

So why doesn't Apple allow a voice turn-by-turn feature on this app if all the data is offline?

Without a full featured voice-activated turn-by-turn feature...I don't think I will ever DL this app.

Everything that could be good is always downgraded by Apple yet people always turn away and look at the "bright side" of things. Very not great.

I can just follow the directions that are layed out by google maps without the need for this.

You're absolutely right. No voice turn-by-turn will basically make this a glorified Google Maps. And I wouldn't spend any appreciable amount of money on a glorified Google Maps.

As for people always turning away and looking at the "bright side" of things, I know, it's ultimately bad for the product. It's this type of complacency that leads to stagnation. However, a bunch of bitching on a fan forum isn't going to amount to much. That said, this shouldn't stop us from leaving feedback on Apple's iPhone feedback page (I do it on a weekly basis). If you haven't done this yet, then keep the complaining to yourself. It's sort of like people who don't vote talking politics. ;)

I disagree that google maps can do what this or say tom tom etc can do.

Google maps are ok to plot a route but I have found using them real time (in Sydney) is hopeless. They jerk around and are too slow to update. Twice when I used them to find somewhere they let me down and I missed a turn off.

Also what I want is to be able to use it when I have no data hungry 3g signal say up a mountain. I want to be able to navigate up Scarfel pike where take it from me there is no 3g. Also you can easily consume 50mb in an hours drive so it's not practical for several hours use unless you have an unlimited data plan.

But google maps simply is not accurate or fast enough to respond.

We need real gps with in built maps and don't let apple kid you we don't .

You are right..I haven't been leaving Apple any feedback. But I think if there was more complaining on every forum....Apple might loosen the rules.

The problem is that a few people complain and the massive amount of fanboys (I've never seen this type of dedication for a company that limits you if they can) leads to Apple doing what they want.

But I will complain from now on....I hope they actually read it. Steve Jobs sucks.

Not to get too off topic but it amazes me to think that people complain about this stuff, remember Apple is a company that is trying to make money and they do things and more the company in the direction that will make them MORE money! Apple researches every move and if they are not releasing things that means there is not a demand for them...just because a few people on forums bitch about not having a feature or being "locked down by Apple" doesn't mean the majority(what Apple caters too) does.

Anyways, I have hopes for this app but we wont know until it hits the store.
