Did you visit the vendors website whose URL was posted in the first message? I imagine that'd be the place to go for up to date info.

Yeah, so just like the title of the thread says, it's coming out "next week." (Nevermind that it was written on Nov 21st :p)

G Map Finally Released (GPS navigation with onboard maps)

Now this actually looks an app worth getting-if you live in Western USA that is.
I live in Australia so its no good for me but when I emailed the developers they assure me they are rolling out maps for the rest of the World early next year.

I have nothing to do with this crowd, honestly, but I hope it does well.

Its $23.99 which may seem lot by app store standards but I hope this doesn't put people off. The app store prices are low and that has, I think been one (the main?)reason for the fairly low standard of apps. You don't pay much and you don't get much.

I would rather pay a fair price and get something decent than fritter away a dollar here and there and end up paying a lot for pointless apps I never use.

I am surprised there has not been more fan fare as this is a true turn by turn GP S which the iphone badly needs.

So you don't need a 3G or Edge connection and can still navigate, just GPS reception. Now TOM TOM, Magellan etc should be getting worried as the threat has now become a reality.

So you paid $24 for an app that you can't even use?

Interesting... Several of the initial detailed reviewers say that it crashes a lot, has a pretty difficult to use interface, and has an impoverished database of points of interest.

Some additional information on the app is provided on their website:

http://xroadgps.com/Maps/GMapforiPhone/tabid/2463/Default.aspx

PS its total space consumption is 930MB... that's not very large, but considering it only has partial coverage of half the US, it would seem like it should have better POIs (and/or integrate with Google Maps or another resource to supplement itself when network access is available).

PPS it shows up as $19.99 USD for me presently....

Internet Required?

After initial map download, is an internet connection required for use? (Important when traveling to avoid data roaming.)

seems like the new reviews are positive.
I have one question, I could care less about voice prompts, but does the app reroute during navigation?

No voice = useless, if I have to look at the map every 2 secs, then I rather use google maps....

I bought it earlier today, but I can't answer a lot of the questions since I haven't been able to use it while driving yet. I will test it out later on tonight and I can report back to you guys. The first reviews are obviously from October, since the app hasn't crashed on me even once. And there are a lot of POIs, at least in the Portland area. It's also quite accurate with my positioning, so I'm guessing those bugs were fixed. My first impressions are pretty positive, the interface is pretty nice, even though I haven't figured out yet how to get the 3D directions. So far it's a much better option than google maps in my opinion, and it seems worth the 20 bucks.

I would be interested to see what people think of this. It's not available where I live so I can't use it.

It looks promising. From emails from the company they say the only reason that there is no voice directions is because apple don't allow it but it could be added in future upgrades.

Google maps is not the same. I have tried to use it a few times and it has been a disaster. It's just not quick or accurate enough AND you need a 3G or Edge signal. This has it's own maps liek any grown up GPs

sorry to say but no voice promts is rather useless, as one member already said. the whole point of a true GPS software is for it to actually behave like one and tell us when to turn or exit and so on, so we can keep our eyes on the road.

until voice commands are present, i'll stick with my tomtom.

I have been waiting for this app for months and bought it tonight.

MISTAKE

The two things I wanted are the pseudo 3D view which is so common among GPS software these days or at least the "heading up" view so I can easily tell if I have to make a right or a left turn. After I downloaded the app, I couldn't find a way to do either. The interface is slightly different from the videos on thier site (and lacks the 3D view button on the map view). I contacted thier customer support and received this answer:

Thanks for your interesting in our Gmap application.

We suppose you're asking if our application support 3D view and
heading-up. Our application is only support North-up view at this time.

Our application video may cause some confucion for 3D view.

Our 3D view is shown for a while when your route is passing to
complicated crossroad or highway junction. There are limited numbers of 3D view images for USA major 15 cities with approx. 1500 points.

I replied back to them that I want my money back since thier videos and even thier quick-start guide show those features as available now. We'll see what they say.

I'm pissed-off. False advertising.

actually it's kind of obvious their software has neither 3d view navigation (3d at certain junctions and so on is different, not really 3d navigation) and also no sound. these are two things they would have strongly advertised if they were included in the software.

until then,

1. start up google maps
2. find current location
3. directions, enter destination
4. viola

Actually, thier videos clearly show that during the map view if the arrow button below the "+" and "-" buttons is pressed, it shows a pseudo-3D view (not a photo-realistic view, that is only available for a few intersections). Also, ALL the videos show the "heading up" view rather than the standard Google "north up" view.

The actual app doesn't even have the arrow button and doesn't do "heading up" view.

As the app is right now, it's a poor-looking local-data google maps.

Have you used it while driving? If you did - does it reroute automatically?

So, no full-time 3-D view (it's always north-facing) and no voice?

How is this any different than Google Maps then?

Is there re-routing? Doesn't say so in the description.

Where's the thumbs down emoticon when I need it?
