Is this a joke? I own both and they don’t compare. You can hardly watch any movies or tv shows on the quest. Only Netflix. No live tv apps. No Disney, no iTunes or Apple TV. It’s horrible. Great technology and nothing to do with it. Vision Pro is mind blowing and I can use it for anything. Live sports on this thing is a game changer. Zuck is delusional.

I can understand the hubris. This is someone who has spent $40B+ and renamed his company to chase the metaverse unicorn only to be ridiculed by the public and blasted by shareholders. Apple comes out with a gen 1 product and gets mostly positive feedback with the expected first gen issues. You have celebrities showing off their Vision Pro and respected tech leaders like Sam Altman, Andrej Karpathy, and Palmer Luckey saying they are impressed. This is the type of reception that Quest never had despite investing enough money to fund a war in Ukraine. What else would you expect Zuck to say ?
Mostly positive feedback? Not sure about that. What I am seeing is that is a “beta” product and that “future” versions should be great…

Half true... Even Meta struggle with VR games anyway despite selling more than 20 million devices.
They keep offering $10 to $20 bucks for their shop and I can't find anything to get. Beat Saber was good but that is it.

While I agree with you, I know I also caught myself saying “I can see our future looking like this,” after watching Ready Player One.
Except neither is anything like Ready Player One. It's mostly like stepping into a big TV. You just get used to it after a while and then it's no longer as novel as you thought it would be.

I have both, if the Apple Vision Pro was a PS5, Quest 3 would be PS3 level in most technical aspects.
In what way(s)? The FOV is less than than of a Quest. The AVP is heavier and requires a battery pack attached to a cord that isn’t hot swappable. Also, compare the game libraries of AVP to Quest. Which is more “PS3”? So is it just because the AVP uses a MicroLED screen?

Many cynical comments here. I think he does raise some good points. I have tried both headsets, and there is no clear winner when you take cost and comfort into account. I had been holding off on buying a Quest 3 until trying the Apple Vision Pro. I have bought most first generation new Apple products, iPhone, iPad, watch and AirPods, all on launch day. I can easily afford the Apple headset, but still haven’t decided to order. And some of the reasons Zuckerberg mentions are some of the reasons I am yet to decide.

Ultimately, I think this will come down to software. The main reason I haven’t decided on the Quest 3 is that the software seems pretty bad. This includes for watching movies, which would be a big use case for me.

Only an idiot that lives in the metaverse would agree with this drivel.

A $3500 device that you use everyday vs a $500 device that you use occasionally if it isn’t stuck in a closet collecting dust. Mark knows that’s what he is up against — user engagement — if he was so confident in his product, why put out the desperate post?

I sort of agree with him regarding "for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for" which is gaming and entertainment. If that's all you're interested in the Quest 3 is probably the better buy (and given the game selection at the moment, probably the better choice). The use case for an AVP is more about the things the Quest 3 isn't great for - productivity and "spatial computing" (however you want to define that) - i.e. tasks outside of entertainment. I think the AVP, particularly future iterations, will define AR/VR in way well beyond what meta has done to date.
spatial computing aka large ipad without data port

For being $3000 dollars cheaper, he's not wrong.
The AVP is better in almost every way. No doubt. Seven times better than the Quest 3 from a price standpoint? Highly questionable. And then adding fuel to the fire, Apple is almost daring buyers to spend even more money beyond that for the base $3499 unit with the $200 carrying case, the $499 Apple Care, the $200 bump from 256G to 512G, etc.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg today compared the Apple Vision Pro to the $500 Meta Quest 3 in an Instagram video, and provided several reasons why he thinks Meta's headset is better than Apple's.

meta-quest-3.jpg

According to Zuckerberg, the Quest 3 is better "for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for," and here are some of the things he said about the Meta Quest 3:
  • It's 7x less expensive than Vision Pro.
  • It does high-quality passthrough with big screens "just like Vision Pro."
  • Quest is a lot more comfortable - it's 120 grams less.
  • There are no wires that get in the way when you move around.
  • The field of view is wider and the screen is brighter.
  • Vision Pro has motion blur when you move around. Quest is a lot crisper.
  • Precision controllers are available, as is hand tracking, and Quest's hand tracking is more accurate.
  • Quest's immersive content library is a lot deeper.
  • You can watch YouTube or play Xbox.
Zuckerberg said that he was surprised at the "tradeoffs" that Apple had to make to provide a higher resolution screen than is offered by the Quest 3, sacrificing "comfort," "ergonomics," and more. He went on to explain that Apple is not always the leader in a new product category, and that he hopes Meta's devices will ultimately "win."The Meta Quest 3 launched back in October. It has two 2K LCD panels compared to the Apple Vision Pro's 4K microLED displays. It weighs 515 grams while the Vision Pro weighs 600 to 650 grams, and it does not have a separate battery pack. It uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, has 8GB RAM, and is equipped with Touch Plus controllers.

Meta has produced several headsets so far, including the Oculus Quest, the Oculus Quest 2, the Quest 3, and the Quest Pro. Apple plans to continue producing headsets, and rumors suggest that the next-generation version will be much more affordable. When explaining the price of the Vision Pro, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that it was "tomorrow's technology today."

He makes some decent points about the hardware comparisons, but every time I put on my Quest I just see a bunch of half-baked kiddie games with the same cartoony art style. I won’t buy an AVP at that price, but I’m far more interested in Apple’s vision for spatial computing. It’s the AR concept videos we’ve seen for years, come to life. It’s just in a chunkier device than I had hoped.

have had the vision pro for about 5 days..i wish it were comfortable to wear because id really like to be able to use it all the time, without that ability, its pretty hard to justify the 3500. I play the quest 3 once every few weeks..and i feel like the cost of $500 is completely worth it.

I mean let’s be honest would any Apple fan on here admit that someone else does it better? I love Apple but they don’t do EVERYTHING better. Let’s be realistic here.
Agreed.

For one thing, Apple's website code has always sucked. Anyone who uses the Apple Developer / App Store Connect website for development will tell you it's buggy and is not good at updating data (like Xcode Cloud build progress). Google has them beat in the web code department.

This has big “it doesn’t even have a keyboard” energy.

Know who has never produced a video to knock a competitor’s product? A CEO of Apple.
You might want to check out Tim's videos excoriating Facebook in particular and social media in general from a few years ago. And surely Apple CEO signed off on the I'm a mac, I'm a PC commercials from way back when. Good times.

He is right, the Vision Pro does cost 7x more… but given that they sell the quest for a loss… Apple is probably making infinitely more profit

I'm not a fan of Facebook or Meta, but in the coming years, as the Vision Pro matures, I'm much more likely to buy a Quest 3. At the moment, for me, the Quest 3 is a more compelling value proposition.
