"The apps in iOS 9 now take advantage of Metal, making more efficient use of the CPU and GPU to deliver faster scrolling, smoother animation, and better overall performance. Email, messages, web pages, and PDFs render faster. And multitasking features on iPad feel fluid and natural."

Looks like the A7 and A8 devices will run much better now!

And what about iphone 4S or 5/5C ?
Now when you scroll up the control center, in iphone 4S, it's not smooth except if you enable contrast in settings.

iPhone 5c still laggy when you send message, i hope this will be fixed.

I really hope this makes my iPad perform how it should. Anyone with an A7 iPad using iOS 9 yet? Are the dumb frame drop scenarios fixed?

iPhone 4S, 5, and 5C do not have Metal. Metal is exclusive to A7 and above devices. They might not be much smoother, in other words.

Oh no! So there will be anything about optimization and performance for the olds devices ? it sucks!

Apple said there were general improvements under the hood and to the framework of iOS, so performance improvements should be seen on older devices as well, maybe just to a lesser extent, unfortunately. On the bright side, it still should be better than iOS 8.

I still am super curious how A7 iPads are gonna do with this update. My mini 2 stutters more than the iPad 2. It's horrendous.

Yes, many situations are smoother on iPad 2 (A5) than the iPad Air, iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3. Control center on the lock screen and over a keyboard for example is perfectly fine on iPad 2, but it stutters on the A7 devices. This is due to the translucency effects that the newer devices have. Not sure how iPad 4 is compared to iPad Air because I never used iPad 4.

I think that Metal will make A7 and A8 devices run like they should have been running since iOS 8. From what I've heard people say, A6 devices run fine due to their 1GB of RAM and 32-bit cpu, and I'm guessing A5 devices will run slightly better on iOS 9 but not much.

I HOPE! I'm hoping that there are system wide optimisations (not just through metal).

so has anyone tested the weather app, which has been notorious for dropping frames when expanding and collapsing cities

I hope they run better on 6+. I hear the scaler caused most of the lag on that device.

I don't think this "feature" will be enabled yet.

I've tried beta 1 on both iPhone 5s and iPad Air and in places there is still lag/sluggish animations. The main two I noticed were calling up Control Centre on 5s was laggy, and the Siri UI was somewhat sluggish as was the scrolling in the new multitasking UI.

Of course, it's the first beta of as many as 7 or 8 between now and Fall so a LOT will change as we know.

I just don't think they'll enable or include the Metal aspect for the UI until closer to the final build.

Anyone else notice that PB3 is actually slower than 8.4.1? When does this "metal" thing come into effect?
Some say that Metal is already enabled but I ve never seen this in any ios 9 beta release notes.

Wasn't Metal enabled in El Cap beta 2 or something? So did Apple say that Metal is enabled in the OS X El Capitan release notes? If Metal hasn't been mentioned in the release notes yet for iOS but it was for OS X, that's a good sign it will be enabled in GM.

That's the question that kills me, is or not mentioned in El Cap beta 2 release notes that Metal is enabled? Because I didn t see this mention in ios 9.

Just reverted back to 8.4.1 and its night and day different than iOS 9 in my iPhone 6. 8.4 is so buttery smooth and iOS 9 has juddering frame rates for near everything. One of the freakin features of iOS 9 is smoother animations so that doesn't make any sense!!!

iOS 9 is still in beta, so it's understandable that it not perform as well as a stable release, even with the improvements from Metal. Once iOS 9 is released, then it's fair to make comparisons.

It's funny how "stable", "smooth", etc. the previous version becomes (no matter how badly it was seen before) in people's eyes as soon as a new one is around to pick on.

But it's true when comparing a beta to a final optimized version.
