Make sure to install the M1 native version of Edge if you are on M1. And mine does not have a separate updater. And remember Gruber is notorious for clickbait type stuff he does to get people to listen to his podcast and watch his videos.

Does seem click baity or he doesn't understand that showing only process % cpu without also showing system/user/idle % doesn't mean anything.

Gruber said he presumed it was Skype. So nothing to do with Edge. Read the replies.

Hardly see Gruber as click bait. One unobtrusive add on his website in a 1/2 square inch column. Podcast has 3-4 30 second ads over a 2.5 hour period. Been reporting on Macs 20+ years and is sought after by News outlets for interviews when Apple is in the news.

Chrome (and any Chromium based browser) on M1 runs on par if not better than Safari - with equal battery consumption..

If Safari saves RAM versus Chrome/Chromium - its optimizing something, and there are reports of users saying that with Safari some pages stutter.

Safari has beautiful UI and is a great browser.
Lets be real. Safari hasnt invented internet and most of webpages are not written specifically for Safari.
You can get speedy test results with Safari on some tests/webpages - but you cant win in versatility of webpages on internet over Chromium-based browsers.

I share the hatred towards Chrome for - GoogleSoftwareUpdates and Keystone processes working in Chrome for Mac without my consent- but these can be eliminated...

Or you can switch to Brave or Edge as other Chromium browsers - but seems that Edge also has microsoft autoupdate feature which works without user consent.
Also Edge install size is larger than Chrome - so we cant speak of less bloat.

Best open-source Chromium based option now is Kiwi browser - but unf it lacks Mac build and... guess more attractive name...

Part of the issue is that this particular updater gets used by multiple apps. Office was the first to use it, but it has been spreading across MS Mac apps. So I don’t think that claim can be made that it has nothing to do with Edge.

My work laptop uses this updater to update Edge, but I haven’t yet confirmed if it is related to Beta/Dev channel, or if it’s just piggybacking on top of the Office install I have. And I’m not a fan of it, to be honest.

I think update is found within the app in Settings > About Microsoft Edge, unlike other apps which may have separate updater tool?

I hope it runs fine. I use edge and MS365. I use it because We get more storage than the 2tb package from apple. Plus MS points are great for gas cards for the Jeep.

I actually have Edge on my M1. No such updater is present.

Unless something changed MS Edge for M1 did have a separate auto updater and one of the things I had to manually remove when removing Edge.

I recently switched from Safari to Edge and much prefer Edge. I love the vertical tab feature (both pinned and regular) and it seems much faster than Safari. Plus, I still use a Surface Pro 7 from time to time and it's nice to have a fully synced browser across my Apple devices and PC. However, I miss the share button and hope Microsoft rolls that soon.

@Leon1das Edge updates do have consant. You just turn off automatic updates and then it asks you every time for permission to update. You can choose not to if you so desire.

I only use this browser on Windows. The name reminds me of Edging. I can imagine the engineers were laughing and thinking ‘Let’s see if Mac users like this Edging’

I actually switched from Safari to it. I find that it consumes less CPU, is faster and generally uses less ram to do so. I did a comparison across a number of browser on the same machine and it came out the best. It actually works really well but at time does seem to have a memory leak.

I installed the M1 version from Microsoft webpage. It opens then crashes immediately? Have reinstalled, restarted the MBP - no joy. Any thoughts?

don't forget to get a MS account so you can collect points for stuff. I get a gas card every couple of months from just my browsing activity and doing a few little fun quizzes.

You can also get five bonus points if you use Microsoft Edge. :)

You'll only receive loads of points if you use Microsoft Bing. It honestly isn't a bad search engine when you consider the fact that it powers every other search engine other than Google (obviously) and Startpage (which is powered by Google). It often provides fewer results, but the results on the first page are often on par with Google in terms of quality. The quizzes and challenges are also awesome and help provide even more points. Everybody has a Microsoft account anyways. The prizes are also great.

I have been using Edge as a Chrome replacement for a few weeks now and so far it has lived up to my expectations. All of the "chrome" supported websites work well. The browser is stable and fast. Never thought I'd compliment Microsoft on a MacOS based product but here we are.

p.s. office 365 apps are surprisingly stable too (you can download the bundle from the App Store or from your portal, and then get on the beta channel).

Microsoft services now are awesome. I use them all.
