I expect High Sierra will run on the mid-2012. I do expect support for latest MacOS will stop shortly after that though. So be it. The last 2 or 3 releases have all been small refinements so even if I go 2 or 3 years with no OS updates, I don't think it'll be a show stopper for me. The machine will continue to run fine.

It's for real. I had the 2012 15" that originally cost me $2799 US, they replaced it with a refurbished 2015 15" that originally sold for $2799.

So did they just phone you after leaving it in and say it'll take too long and immediately offered the refurb? Or did they first say come back later when the parts are available ?

What about latest version of MacOS?

What about it?

Apple has already announced that if a Mac runs Sierra it'll run High Sierra.

Here's the hardware list for Sierra, direct from Apple's site:

  • MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)

As the 2010 is still listed, I expect support for a 2012 MBP to continue for another couple years.

My mid 2012 MBPR has just started showing a service battery warning, so will be putting mine is soon as well.

Interested to see how this goes.

Cheers

Still ongoing but I will update as soon as it's resolved. Don't want to say too much until then

The top case on those mid 2012 rMBPs is currently constrained, if your battery is below 80% you can pay for the battery repair and Apple will give you a 2015 MBP refurbished machine. They did it for me and I've heard of at least a dozen others.

Is the top case specific to 2012 rMBPs or would a 2013 fall into the same category? Was there a top case redesign after 2012, excluding the 2016-2017 models?

I finally use my 2012 rMBP today after few months of not using it and wanted to check battery status...It says battery is healthy with only 22 cycles. 8217 mAn Battery capacity (97%) Is that good for aging 2012 rMBP?

Yes that's extremely good for that age.

I would guess it is the same as the 2012 to 2015 look identical but you would need to confirm.

I took mine in today, they offered me two options: send it in and pay the $300 for the repair, or keep it and wait until mid-September, and they'll do the battery (and top case) replacement for free. I opted for the second, but I wonder if I should've gambled and seen if they would have refurbished mine...

Is yours a 2012 or 2013?

Sounds like OP got offered a new laptop. :)

I also had 2012 rMBP replaced with a new laptop.
