I took my mid 2012 rMBP in today and this first part is exactly what happened. So I guess I'll wait to see what happens next.
I wouldn't mind a 2015 machine but I do want a dedicated GPU in my machine.

I find myself in this same situation waiting for them to call. I'm a QLab 4 user and absolutely require discreet graphics card. Are the 2015's not discreet or they just happened to offer one without discreet graphics to those in question.

I expect High Sierra will run on the mid-2012. I do expect support for latest MacOS will stop shortly after that though. So be it. The last 2 or 3 releases have all been small refinements so even if I go 2 or 3 years with no OS updates, I don't think it'll be a show stopper for me. The machine will continue to run fine.
The oldest supported MacBook Pro in High Sierra goes back to 2010 models, so you are good for at least 3 more OSX versions.

It seems their policy is to provide an equivalent model to you based on the one you give them. If yours has discrete graphics, they'll try to give you one of the refurbs with discrete graphics matching the level you had before.

My battery is at 83.7% and 675 cycles. The battery gets warm sometimes but I don't get any warning messages. At the risk of sounding like I am abusing the goodwill of Apple, is it worth me booking an appointment to see if I am eligible?

It may be worth your while paying for a new battery as it's probably nearing end of life (675 cycles is certainly good going although they say "1000 cycles").

In my case, would they replace the battery or offer a replacement Macbook Pro?

Impossible to say. I would prepare to pay for battery replacement for the 2012 laptop and if anything is offered by Apple take that as a bonus and appreciate they don't have to do anything for you.

Thank Psynnott, should I act dumb and just advise the battery sometimes feels warm or should I straight up ask for a battery replacement?

does anyone know when the 2012 rmbp will become obsolete? My battery is at 85% with 340 cycles and maybe it'll fall to 80% later this year, but is it too late?

Well, they can't very well make a machine obsolete that runs on the latest OS. I think you'll be able to buy a batter for at least another year or two.

So they will give you a new macbook without a discrete graphics card ? I thought they would give you something similar because all the 2012 models have discrete graphics cards. Will they allow me to exchange to a macbook with a discrete graphics card if the first exchange doesn't have one ?

Still waiting so I called apple. Can be up to 2 weeks for the machine to arrive. Still a bit to wait.

Quick update for anyone in a similar position. My Macbook Pro was fluctuating between 80-85% capacity and just under 700 cycles. Took it to the Apple Store and was given either option. (replace battery for free in September or get CRU for £200) I took the CRU option but have been advised that it could take up to a month before they can source an appropriate CRU.

Quick question: what should I expect to get as a replacement based on my specs (2.6, 512gb, 16gb ram, gt650) My heart says a TB 2016/17 model but my head says a 2015 refurb. Anyone else in a similar position to me? Will it realistically take a month before I receive a replacement?

Thanks

Your spec matches mine and I was offered 2015.

Amazingly quick turnaround from Apple, just received a call to take payment but was advised that the replacement unit will take up to three weeks to deliver. I wasn't able to upsell the device to a new TB model though. Shame but still brilliant customer support from Apple.

I had the same specs and am waiting to find out what I get. They told me it'd take about a week. I don't have such high hopes as you did about a 2016 (I literally just expected a new battery in my existing machine). The idea that I could even get a 2015 seems impossible to me. Apple is so great when it comes to this stuff. They did take note that I need discreet graphics in whatever I get.

I like this mindset, anything better than a 2012 seems like a great deal to me.

I was fluctuating right around, and in some cases below, 80% according to a couple of apps that I have (Coconut Battery, iStats). I took mine in the other day, they ran diagnostics and according to their test my machine had a 82.0% design capacity. I genuinely have been disappointed with the battery life over the last couple of years. They Genius I had was not familiar with Apple's battery policies (I could tell) and without it failing their diagnostic (below 80% threshold), there was not much I could do.

I was offered a repair but it was in the neighborhood of $500, can't remember the exact number. I literally just bought a 15'' tbMBP the other day so I just can't justify spending more than $200. Who knows what would happen even if I did pay-- I'd assume I'd be treated identically to those getting battery replacements but who knows. Anyways, congrats to those who managed to pull this off. Especially those who got new $2700 computers for $200 ;)

I just took my 15" retina mid-2012 into the Apple store to get the battery replaced (I'm at 70% capacity). They said the battery part was out of stock and that I had to wait until mid-September. They didn't offer me any other alternative except to leave and come back in September. Should I try another Apple store or are they just going to see my past history and tell me the same thing?
