I would try again, firmly but politely don't accept September.

Well, that worked! I went to another Apple store and acted like I had never been in for this problem before. Right away, the guy gave me 2 options: wait till Sept and get the battery replaced for free, or get a 2015 refurb model. Of course I opted for the refurb and should hopefully get it in the next 3-5 days. I did specify that I wanted one with a discrete graphics card like my current model, but they tried to push back saying my model was the base model and in 2015 the base model only had integrated graphics. In the end, they said they'll try to "upgrade" it to discrete, so we'll see.

I still have not received my replacement and getting quite impatient.
When I last spoke to them on Wednesday, they said they 'have until Tuesday to get it in'. I found this a bit strange - what happens after Tuesday if it doesn't arrive ?

I wouldn't be surprised if they are unable to source a direct 2015 replacement, its probably on hold awaiting a decision as to whether to give you a 2016 model instead. Perhaps after Tuesday Apple may feel they have no choice but to give you a 2016 model to avoid further delay.

(I know I'm probably grasping at straws as I'm in the same boat!)

SO I brought mine in to Apple Store in Montreal on Thursday, and they called to tell me today battery failed extended diagnostics. They will be replacing my battery tonight as it is supposedly in stock... Going tomorrow to pay and pickup my "fixed" laptop... :(

*edit* they just Called to tell me the machine has been repaired... So I'm guessing this replacement thing was either too good to last or does not include Canada. Anyway I needed a new battery anyway so whatever...

Went to my local store on the 17th to exchanged my battery. It failed the diagnostic - received 3 options on getting my computer fixed. Decided to use the CRU option. Genius told me to take my computer home and backup, and expect a call the next day to bring it in. I didn't receive a call all week. Called on a Thursday asking whats up, said they didn't even place an order on CRU, and it'd take a 2-3 week wait.

Received a call on Saturday to come in and receive my CRU unit.

Came in, exchanged my 2012 2.6ghz/16gb/512/GTX650m, received a 2017 2.9ghz i7/16gb/512/Radeon 560 Touchbar model.

Didn't have to pay the battery replacement fee!

just picked up my 2012 rmbp with a new battery. not sure if i'm pissed or relieved to have a working battery...

Edit ... And it turns out the machine is failing AHT for sensors... something they where supposed to "fix". Back to the Apple Store... If it turns out my logic board is hosed, and I paid for a battery replacement anyway I'm gonna be pissed.

The 2012 is still a flying machine - I would be happy enough to keep it. You've got a brand new top case including keyboard, trackpad and battery for £200. That's a bargain!

I had a mid-2012 rMBP, and I got it replaced with a 2017. They initially wanted to give me a 2015 model with the Iris Pro graphics, but I argued because it didn't have a discrete GPU, it didn't at least equal the 2012 lol.

I doubt that will happen for me as the 2015 they offered me had a dgpu.

Got mine, quicker than I thought. It's a mid-2015 2.5 GHz with the Radeon R9. Huge step up from the mid-2012, very pleased all around.

I havent been called yet, it's actually been over a week. Thinking of calling, they called over a week ago for my payment.

I have a mid-2012 15-inch Retina MBP, and it started telling me a month or so ago about this "service battery" warning. I looked around the web to see what this was about, and found a number of sites, including Apple's, that said there was a way to fix this. The theory is that the battery has electonics which need to be recalibrated every so often, and once you do that, this warning goes away. I tried out what they recommended, and sure enough, my battery is "normal" now.

The fix was to plug your system in, charge the battery to 100 %, then unplug it and drain the battery until the system shuts itself off. Then let it sit like that for at least 5 hours. After that, plug it in and run the battery up to full again, and the warning status will have disappeared.

I did this last week and the battery status is still normal. I have no idea how long this will last, or if the battery is really on borrowed time here. It had about 500 cycles on it, and the battery is supposed to live for 1,000.

Cheaper than a battery replacement. For now, at least.
Well, now the Service Battery warning is whining at me again, so I guess this isn't a permanent fix. I'll have to take it in to the Genius folks and see what they say.

So, I rechecked by battery today and it is at 82.6% with coconut battery. I made a genius bar appt for this Friday. I have the mid 2012, lower model, it should have discrete graphics? I wonder what the apple diagnostic test will show.

Took the system in today. The Genius guy ran diagnostics and the battery failed. He said that Apple has decided to just replace systems with this problem, so they're going to replace mine. He couldn't say what the replacement would be, but he did say it would be equal to or better than my current configuration, and it would be NEW. I don't know if he meant to say it was actually a new system, or just a different system. But he did say the replacement would never have been used. Anyway, they're supposed to call me tomorrow to talk about all this. I'll have to see what kind of system they give me.

This is really an astounding program from Apple. But it's very stealth. If I hadn't read about it here, I would never have known to bring my system in. So, a big THANKS to MacRumors.

Refurbished 2015 models == New, to Apple. But some people have been getting 2016/2017 replacement models.

I'm curious ... Whay kind of warranty, if any, is Apple giving you guys that got one of these newer units?

I was told that it's like buying a new mac. So you get a New Years coverage and an option
To buy Apple care again.

Then that makes the deal even better, IMO, and it was already incredible to begin with.

I was told that it would be a 90 day warranty. I haven't gotten my new machine though, so maybe someone who has gotten theirs can double check the length of their warranty.

If an Apple Store was to offer -me- a 2015 replacement (instead of just the screen for the 2012), I'd just smile and say "thank you very much, sir!" -- and then wait it out.
