Amazing picture. I got my iPhone 15 Pro Max last week. But I doubt if I will ever get an opportunity to see Galactic Center and shoot it.
Thanks.. you can go online and look for a light pollution map to see if there are darker skies nearby. Like this one:

That looks pretty darn fantastic for a phone. I may go for a drive soon to test this out myself.

No not anymore. The three frames that the iPhone takes are aligned differently now to avoid trails. Something new in iOS 17 apparently.
Now I'm curious to try this out with my 11PM, see if shots are any different since the software is working differently.

That WOULD be interesting to know. I actually thought it was a 15 specific thing, but it could certainly just be changes in iOS 7. Not out of the realm of possibility.

Do you use any 3rd party apps or just stock iphone camera app?
I have several third-party apps that I use for general photography. No third-party apps except for Even Longer will work for long exposures. I do use Even Longer to get great shots of star trails and long exposure shots of the night sky. Other than that I’m starting to use the native camera app more often now because the improvements that have been made in the software and image quality from the 15 pro max. Of the third-party apps that I do use, I like ProCam by Moment, Halide, and NOMO RAW

I mean realistically I would want to be able to set the timer on night mode to 1 second increments instead of 3, 5, 10, and 30 and write a shortcut to do interval shooting on that setting and stack them in Sequitor. I need to replace the battery in my remote so that I can try this out....

Jock one with tripod. It was a bit cloudy so no Milky Way shots (maybe the end of the Milky Way but I’m no expert lol)

Which do you guys prefer? That’s my third star edit. Not sure what can I do better

Here's the interval shooting shortcut so far. It'll ask number of shots and how long each interval needs to be prior to shooting. Now I just need to see if it'll activate night mode and shoot long shutter. Otherwise I'll have to modify it to use the Moment App and leave it in long shutter when activating the shortcut.

I took this in Sweden, 30km outside of Umeå.
30sek, iPhone 15 Pro Max.
No Edit

Would using the 5x zoom on, let’s say Jupiter, produce a better view of it?
Im guessing no, didn’t try it last time.

Nice shot! ProRAW or HEIF? The 5x camera will not do anything for you with getting a detailed image of Jupiter. If you have a telescope, attaching the iPhone to the eyepiece will be the best way.

If you mean see with your eye, you can't see stars and the Milky Way like these photos because your eye can only capture light for about 1/30 of a second at a time. These photos are taken with the iPhone's camera that's able to capture light continuously (without refreshing) for 30 seconds.

Ok so here is a revised Interval Shooting setup. The original asked for a time every shot, which isn't what it's supposed to do. This one asks for how many shots, waits 10 seconds, shoots, waits 10 seconds, shoots, repeats (x) times. Still haven't gotten it to shoot in Dark Mode and long shutter on Moment isn't as good as on iOS.

Here's a lightly edited shot from last night on the 11PM next to the original, stock camera app for 30s. It's still pretty noisy and trailing. They should probably be shooting at full ISO for 5s and stacking 6 shots instead of what looks like 3 shots at 10s.

The 11 pro max was the first iPhone to have night mode. The sensor is smaller and I never got good results using mine when I had it. Your efforts Are paying off. Do you plan to upgrade to the 15 pro?

You should look at buying the app “Even Longer” for astronomy and long exposure shots, it’s a fantastic app.

Yeah we're looking at upgrading Black Friday. The 11s are starting to exhibit stutters and general grumpiness as they age and the oldest is on my old 8+ so she can't even update to 17 now. So we're all getting phones and she'll get to purchase her first one. Not sure what the wife is planning on but I'm definitely getting a 15PM. That 5x optical will come in handy for sure and I can't wait to test out the 1x on night mode for comparison. If I can remember to do so and the weather permits, I'll take a last night mode shot on the 11 before we leave to upgrade and take another with the 15 the following night.

Wow.. based on what I saw, HEIF looks great. The stars are nicely pinpointed and clean. A definite sign of how good the 15 pro / max 1x camera sensor is.
From what I’ve seen there is a pretty noticeable difference between the 14PM and 15PM when it comes to astrophotography.

Is it possible to just use that on the Milky Way or do you mean general? I set it to around 40
You can use the radial tool on the Milky Way like this screenshot to adjust the exposure of the Milky Way. Adjust curves and black levels to accurately adjust the sky etc.

Ok got that thanks for that. Is it possible to reverse that radial tool? So first adjust Milky Way and then rest of the pic? Didn’t find it. Lightroom seems a bit complex to start with haha
