I will never understand why anyone would pay a subscription for a weather app. Personally I find the apple offering more than satisfactory and I don’t see a good reason to pay (even less to pay regularly) for carrot or other apps.
I did just look at Carrot because it’s always highly rated but I’m not pay that for information I can get for free

I like the stock App, but sadly as with anything Apple these days, after some traveling & depending the location, it has gotten worse in terms of accurately telling the weather, not sure if they changed something for the worst. Like sometimes it's showing sunny weather when it's raining and sky completely gray, or like 8 hours of 80-100% rain chance and not a single drop, & sky not even cloudy. 🤷🏼‍♂️
I just realized that even though I look at the stock app daily, especially the one on my watch, I don't really rely on it anymore. And yes it has gotten less reliable.

I have good weather proof coats and jackets and I wear layers. I gave up on umbrellas in college when I realized they were more of a bother than they were worth. I rely on local news for extreme weather forecasts, and for everything else, wearing layers lets me be ready for just about any weather.

I think wanting to know all the weather minutae was more due to my obsession once upon a time with the technology, rather than a genuine need to know all of it. Past a certain point I'm going to have to do certain errands regardless of the weather. I find myself ignoring the weather most of the time and just getting on with things.

In Australia, the only accurate app to use is BOM (Bureau of Meteorology). The official government weather forecaster. Some apps use data from the B.O.M. but others (like Apple) don't use the most up-to-date. It has more weather stations than any in the country.

Anybody from the UK reading this? A big issue with a lot of these apps is that they use third-rate weather services that don't have the accuracy, knowledge or reputation of the Met Office. Are there any weather apps (aside from the Met Office's own) that use Met Office data? Even the BBC doesn't nowadays.
I find the standard Weather app to be the most useful for the UK but it's still not great. I've used most of the weather apps over the years and since Dark Sky stopped being a thing, the standard app seems most up to the job. I hope it will be a lot more useful when they use more of Dark Sky's data sources as Dark Sky was amazingly accurate in its heyday up until 2 years ago - then it went pear shaped as Apple's meddling started to make the app less & less accurate.

Doesn't the built-in app still use The Weather Channels data? Might be ok for the US but it can be wildly inaccurate elsewhere on the planet.

For the UK, the only serious alternative to the built in weather app is the Met Office app. I've no idea why people use the BBC Weather app, its hopeless where I live. In fact it doesn't even detect my right location! It thinks I am in a town a few miles away so its no wonder it can't get my actual local weather correct.

What is even the point, if you find a great new weather (or whatever) app, if they get too popular Apple is just going to buy them out and shut them down? 😢

I just want Dark Sky's distictive alert sound incorporated into Weather -- instead of that sad, generic "tri-tone" noise it makes now. When Dark Sky's alert played, I had a Pavlovian urge to grab my umbrella. That tri-tone crap tells me nothing.

I want to know why there are ads and a subscription model for the NOAA app - my tax dollars already fund that. I shouldn't have to pay again to unlock any functionality.

I tried Carrot because it has an option to configure it EXACTLY like Dark Sky. But it was just way too expensive. Sorry but $40 per year is just too much for a weather app.
Apple bought Dark Sky because it was too good and too cheap. By killing it, they make more money off their cut of these ridiculous subscription alternatives.

Many people are saying they love the 🥕 Carrot App. I'm sure it serves a good purpose and it's an amazing app but they need to come up with a better name. What kinda weather name is that? Carrot Weather app?

Does anyone know the history behind the name?

Here is a 2015 post talking about the creation of the app. Carrot is the AI's name and there are/were other apps Carrot is in.
