Why is nobody talking about IM+? Doesn't it suffice?

Isn't IM+ the only IM application in App Store that can't keep you logged in after the application is closed? Even AIM does it for like ten minutes, whilst Palringo keeps you on for 1 hour (currently), Beejive 24 hours, and MobileChat (theoretical) forever (theoretical).

My AIM and mobileme accounts still won't log on in MC. Otherwise, I've never had a problem with it.

What services do you use then? MSN/Windows Live? If so then does your contact list ever change? Does it truly reflect who is online/idle/away?

The only other service I really use is gtalk, which works fine in every respect. So, I can't say MC works well other than with gtalk.

SMS requires a cell connection but, not a DATA connection... meaning EDGE, 3G and Wifi could be DEAD and you could still send and receive SMS messages. Also, MobileChat stays connected REMOTELY so you actually wouldn't need a data connection on the iPhone if you were already connected to MobileChat.

Last night I had all 5 bars for a cell connection but, I didn't have an EDGE, 3G or GPRS logo on the screen.... I was able to send and receive SMS messages.

I get that, but again - when you lost your EDGE, 3G, GPRS and WiFi signals even if you are connected remotely to MobileChat you're not able to connect to the App to send/receive an IM through the program.

I get what you're saying and I agree SMS notification is probably better for that reason (if you've got unlimited SMS'es) - I'm not arguing that, but what good does it do if you get an SMS saying "you've got a message" when you can't get to that message. (BTW - the same would work for Beejive since it also keeps you connected remotely).

BeeJive looks cool from the screenshots, but come on... $16? Seriously? No thanks.

I bought into the hype with MobileChat and bought it since the $2.99 price point was supposed to be temporary and then jump up, but it sucks pretty badly. It hasn't even been able to connect to the server at all for me in well over a month so I just got rid of it.

Seriously it is. It's truly a 5 star app.

It sure does for me... $15 for a mobile IM client? No thanks...

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. Beejive keeps you logged into your IM services for up to 24 hours when you close the app. IM+ does not (logs you out). Beejive has instant email notification (MM, exchange, yahoo) of a received IM when app is closed. IM+ does not. Beejive UI is far superior. Since Beejive keeps you logged in when closing the app, I plan to start using my iChat account for texting allowing me to decrease my text plan by $10/month. Beejive will basically pay for itself in 2 months time.

That's all well and good, but why are people pushing the idea of email/sms notifications? Once Apple stops screwing around and releases the update with push notifications, that's going to be a non-issue.
Better UI? Maybe, but I'm not particularly willing to pay $16 just for a marginally better UI, especially for an IM service that's free to use to begin with.

Because some people may depend on near instant notification. But it doesn't matter. Truth is, when push comes out, IM+ won't have it in it's current state. You need your own server for push. Not only to push the notifications...but to keep you signed on the accounts. Push doesn't keep you signed in. It just makes it so that instead of queued messages being sent to you when you open the application again, it notifies you right away.

And that is why it's $16. Of course Palringo managed to do it for free. But anyway, in order for IM+ to utilize push, they still need to pay for a server and update their application.

Lastly, keeping a user logged in for 24 hours (which I'm sure there are plenty of users who don't reset the clock by going into the application) is a good amount of stress for a server. Palringo is up to one hour, but it doesn't get any easier from there.

Once apple releases there app push notification service, devs will still have to incorporate it into there apps. Beejive will be able too since they have the servers to keep you logged in and push the notification to your device. Currently, IM+ doesn't imploy any servers to do this.

I have given MobileChat all the chances in the world to work... and it hasn't. I think I got about three IM conversations to actually work in all this time. I'm sorry I wasted the money on it.

I want to give Beejive a chance, but damn, $16 for a IM app? That's a bit steep.

Yeah... seems like it's always going to be fixed "Next Week" yet it's never fixed and then they just say "Next Week" again and again and again....

Once BeeJive lowers its price, then MobileChat will die. (note, I bought BeeJive and use it everyday, so I know it's worth the price...some people don't think so, though)

In my case the Mobilechat debacle helped sell Beejive. Once I started thinking about the resources it takes to fly a multi-platform chat app with pseudo-"push," I didn't think an extra $12 was out of line.

Wow.. They're going to start with each protocol from scratch, again.

If that doesn't work, they're going to start from scratch, again, with something else that won't be finished until January.
