They really should offer some services that Mobileme provides are part of the regular mac os experience (more specifically syncing of calendars & email, for those that dont use imap)

Seems like it should be in OSX

We disagree, but I'll guess we'll find out in a month.
Good info. Thanks. Any link you can provide with this info all in one spot?

Exciting stuff!

Advertising with iAds could still fit into that scenario too... Though again, as is standard with most services, premium paying customers (perhaps 3 apple products or something similar) won't receive ads.

Yes it'll be interesting to see

a. If Apple indeed plans to take a subset of MobileMe free.
b. If they plan to attach advertising as a way of generating revenue

My thoughts on iAd are this. Apple seems to be positioning them as a premium add service with above average pricing and quality. The typical add on Google's Gmail for instance isn't close to be interactive and emotive as Apple plans iAds to be. They are often fairly unobtrusive links in the margins.

If rumors are true every iAd is a penny per view and $2 per click which means that that they need to be heavily targeted to be effective and thus warrant good click through to purchase.

For Apple to take a standard http: web page and embed effective advertising that is worth $2 per click they have to have some great analytics on the backend .Sadly they don't outside of the walled garden that is the App Store.

Much like Apple did not assault Microsoft's beach head in Office Suites and Server OS they are not likely to attack Google's fortified advertising stronghold by directly emulating them.

Apple has already played their hand. iAd for the App Store and a future where "generalized" search gives way to searching through a Personal Virtual Assistant which is why they purchased Siri.

I could be totally wrong here but I'm trying to be as persuasive as I can.

The way I see it

I'd say if you own any Apple product the service should be free.

I rarely ever use it and wish they added more features and data storage.

I suspect this will also be the site of the Web based I-tunes of the future.

Great news considering you can get 90 percent of the stuff for free online the only feature i would want is find my iPhone when i get the 4th gen iPhone but if i can get my own .me account i would ditch gmail in a second for me

Finally, they'll be charging what the service is worth!

No kidding. I wouldn't mind paying the fee every year if they'd just make MobileMe web-mail work worth a damn. SO slow...freezes up constantly. It's pretty much an every day thing, I have to refresh my browser or just close it completely and log back in, because a page I click on simply won't load.

+1

My MobileMe email account didn't work all the time during my trial period, thankfully. Sometimes, I'd send an email from my MobileMe account and it wouldn't arrive at my receiving email account for like a day an a half.

Just too many bugs to justify the $99 price tag.

I would be shocked... but you never know. Maybe they will offer it for free if you purchase a Mac.

That's the way it used to be with the old .mac, it was a selling point. You get a mac and you got email, a .mac web address, 'n such. Then they'd charge for extra space 'n such.

What are the uses for this MobileMe? Why would I use / need it?

I have used Macs since they came into existence, and I have owned several of them the past 20 years. But I have not used either dotMac or MobileMe.

Only serious replies, please.

If you have multiple Macs/iPhones Mobileme is wonderful for keeping things in sync. Not just contacts, calendars and bookmarks but everything from system prefers to dock items and keychains.

It's easy to locate your iPod Touch/iPhone or iPad with the "Find my device" feature and you have backup and remote access features as well.

Then of course you have the web space (integration is easy with iWeb) and photo galleries.

The primary detractors of MobileMe boil down to a few common groups.

1. Free - They don't want to pay
2. Limited scope - MobileMe only interests them in a few areas
3. Wedded to another service - Dropbox, Gmail/Google etc
4. Negative - "MobileMe sucks because my mail was slow one day"

In a nutshell of course. Everyone's opinion is valid for them but for me personally I find mobile me worth the $6 a month I pay (real world pricing from Amazon.com)

For me it's simple..skip a latte a couple of times or avoid fast food one day out the month and MobileMe is paid for.

I guess I am the only one that remembers that it started out as a free service. Before it was .Mac it was called iTools and it was free. It was a benefit of being a part of the Mac community. It certainly was much more basic back then, but I have been using it since. The remote wipe for iPhone and other added features keep it worth the family pac price for this household even if it doesn't go back to being a free service.

I remember good old iTools, in fact, you didnt even have to have a mac to use the email if I remember right. There was a huge uproar when a Jaguar update started branding it .mac and would began charging. The good old days! It's kinda a sucker punch to all of us who paid when it was .mac. The only benefits of .mac were iDisk, ecards and backup really. $99 for that compared to mobileMe, makes mobileMe a bargain, lol.

if apple is serious about iAd, they will make mobileme free. More hits, more ad revenue.Mobileme is not attractive at all at this point, if they make it free, may be some additional users sign up.

Free is about time

I don't mind paying family mobileme account, but only one of my friends has mobileme and frankly I NEVER use iChat or other services to network because nobody is on mobileme... at least not my friends.

For me it is very useful, especially contact, ical sync over air.

They could make it cheaper like 19$ at year or make some stuff like iPhone tracking a paid service.

Never happened here, of course it could it is an email. Keep in mind that your receiving accounts could be the problem,

MobileMe contains an imap account and other service like Gmail are imap.
If you need email on more than 1 device, pop is crap anyway.

I've had mobile me for a good while and like it. I use it to sync omnifocus, etc... iDisk is nice, but I still use dropbox. I have used it to find my iphone more than once and it's OK but not great, unless it can tell me exactly where my phone is it's still aggravating to know it's in my house, but where? I guess I'm being too picky though. Oh, syncing my MBP to my iMac is definitely a huge timesaver. I would think most people can do with free services, however, for Me it's a awesome. I didn't pay full price for my family plan, so that was nice too, usually if your buying a new laptop or desktop at the Apple Store you can get them to throw in MobileMe and AppleCare for almost nothing.

If apple is looking for a way to fend off android then this may be part of the strategy. Mac.com is what makes my iThings work. If it was not for the sync OTA, then I very well may have been on another phone by now. Can't tell you how many times that it has saved me ass.

I need more space - my 60GB is full. I decided to keep a second back up in the cloud and chose Apple for no other reason than I 'feel' safe with them.
