I wouldn't say MM mail supports personal domains (in anyway). People get it done via gimmicks in mail.app and the iphone, but those are just that - gimmicks.

Until MM Mail itself accepts mail intended for personal domains, it doesn't support them, which is why I still use free gmail. But, MM provides other services that still makes it worth the money for me.

MM doesnt need SSL like other email services. They use a completely diffrent type of technology. Who ever says it's not as secure doesn't really know what they are talking about.

rofl. OK, I'll bite ...

If you use a lan analyzer (e.g. wireshark on the PC), you get to see your email floating through the internet, when you access MM mail via the web page. This means that, if you use a public wifi point and access MM mail via the web page, people around you could see your email, too.

Now, accessing MM mail via the iPhone or a client (like Thunderbird) can be secure, but I'm not sure if they're secure by default (you may have to change settings).

They are configured to use SSL by default.

Sorry, a bit late to the thread, but you're absolutely right. Anyone who thinks MobileMe web interface is totally unsecure, read this: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/0/15/inside_mobileme_web_3_and_web_client_server_apps.html

Try reading the attached comments, like this one:

or this one:

Eventually, someone points to this:

As the mooseyard.com author says: "... and honestly, it doesn’t take a Bruce Schneier to simply run a packet sniffer and notice plaintext email traffic."

Just a thought

Ok it sounds like you have all researched this a lot. But I'd just like to throw something out there. I like to do this at home about everything. Kind of a devils advocate thing from a total outsider.

First let me tell you that I am a switcher. Out of the 12 computers we have here, at the present time, only 4 are Apple products. I could go on forever about my windows woes but that's another story.

I came to this site to find out just what this me.com thing was. Yes it sounded really cool and exclusive when I got an email( from my Pastor no less) with this address. I had no idea it was from Apple

I found out from Apple's site it was a subscription service.
So what was the advantage over gmail, that I would want to pay for it? You folks gave me that information.

Here's what I thought off the cuff.

Yahoo's mail used to be completely free (in all fairness we always got it free from our ISP). Then you had to pay for certain services.

Gmail came along, completely free. Yes, it was by invitation only, but with 100 invites and the ability to invite yourself and get 100 more, it wasn't hard to get one.

Now, I do more research into things than the average Joe, so when I saw that Apple was charging for this, the first thing I though of was; This is a mistake.

Yahoo is struggling and Google is taking off.

When I push Macs to my PC friends the first thing they say is, "Yeah but it costs more." Since some of my PCs work great, I can only assume that this the case with some of my friends . I can just hear them say. "It figures. Apple charges more for everything" . And then watch them walk away.

I agree, you get what you pay for, or I wouldn't have purchased my Mac. Others don't always think that way. I guess it's good that Apple doesn't seem to want to take over the world from MS. Just scare it a little/alot.

Just random thoughts here.

Yahoo Mail is still free with advertising. If you pay you do not see the advertising. I prefer a solution where you can pay a reasonable fee with no advertising.

As far as the cost of MobileMe. You get much more for the price then you do with say Yahoo Mail Only. I need the full integration (OTA Mail, Calendar, Contacts) between my PC/Outlook and my iPhone and MobileMe does that nicely for me withh no advertising. I am on the Family Pack with my Wife and we paid $99 on Amazon. I believe it is now $79 on Amazon for the Family Pack. Pretty good deal. And I am primarly a Windows User. However, the iPhone was too good to pass up and now I am a AppleTV User. Who New....

I forgot about the ads in Yahoo. They even added them to our paid account. It was pop forwarding that I was thinking about.

That is a pretty good price for your mobileme. And as nice as the iphone is and as much as I'd love one, I do not want a phone with my PDA. I hate phones. And I like being able to be unavailable. Too many years on a beeper I guess.

My family uses google mail and the calendar. What I love about the new notifier is that on my Mac, the calendar and mail icons show in the status bar at the topof the screen instead of the bottom. I can also see events that other members of my family put up and plan accordingly.

Until I can convert all the PC's in this family to Macs, I guess it will have to do. That shouldn't take too long either. The pc's are dropping like flys. ;)

Mm

I personally am heavily MAC based. But, Gmail does have it's advantages. I use Gmail for casual emailing and Mobile Me for business related items.:apple:

Gmail uses push when dealing with a competent IMAP client. (Mail, Thunderbird, etc). It only somewhat works on the iPhone.

GMAIL has the most brilliant SPAM filtering that I have ever witnessed. My Yahoo!Mail was letting five instances through everyday now POP through GMAIL and see ONE. PER. MONTH!

thought i would bring this one back, I have now used mobile me for the last year after being a gmail user...

I needed to get an old email from my google account so i logged into gmail for the 1st time in months and its so much sleeker, faster, user friendly and it actually works!

what is apple playing at? other services are great but the email web interface and usability is shockingly awful, i cant send emails, the buttons dont work, its slow and just rubbish compaired to gmail :(

i dont want to cancel my mobile me sub as i like the contacts and sync with iphone but i feel let down by apple with the lack up updates to the mail service and usability... every time i click inbox is has to load it all again.. why cant my mail just be there at my fingertips like gmail?

Contacts is the only thing that's keeping me on mobileme. If google ever supports contact groups, I'm dumping mobileme. On the other hand, I don't think google is likely to do that anytime soon.

Gmail is the only webmail service I've used that has somewhat pushed me off of using a mail client (ie. Mail.app) because of how functional the website is.

One thing Gmail absolutely has over MM e-mail is server-side filtering.

agreed - I love most aspects of mm, but the webmail is really just pathetic. If they could make it better I might ditch gmail.

I only use web mail when there's no other option, so that won't convince me to dump gmail What might is if MM would allow personal domain integration with mail.

You forgot:
  • The MM web mail interface is not secure. If you're accessing MM, for example, via a public wifi point, and you're dealing with sensitive financial/personal information and/or love letters :D , you might as well print out copies and hand them out to random strangers on the street.
Fortunately, the non-web mail access appears to be secure, although you may have to configure them to be secure (I'm not sure if they're secure by default).

No non web interface is secure on an open WiFi point, unless you log in with SSL

Gmail + Google Sync > MobileMe

I switched to Google Sync from MM, and the e-mail push notifications have been more reliable overall. Contacts sync is supported in Address Book, as well as CalDAV in iCal.

Plus, you don't get those phantom outages that MM support denies for the first hour, then posts on the System Status page AFTER everything is back up.

I canceled MM after the free trail. I see no justification to pay for it. Gmail covers all my needs.
