yea i have to say, the mac version of cod4 runs just as if not better than the windows version. i haven't had any problems, does exactly what i need to do: run the game.

Not on my machine (2009 Mac Pro 2.66 8-core 4870 GPU). COD 4 runs acceptably under OSX, but I have to tweak the graphics down some to get it to run the same FPS I get under either Windows XP or Windows 7.

The difference was far more noticeable with the 8800GT. The 4870 narrowed the gap a fair amount.

Works really well with medium settings: Macbook Pro 13", cheapest one.
Don't worry. Before you buy, try the torrent. The gameplay might be different for everyone.

I don't see anything wrong with pirating a game to make sure it works before you buy it. Better than buying it and then finding out it doesn't work.

Sure, I understand that perspective, however ...

- 99.5% of people who pirate NEVER pay for it, for any of a variety of rationalizations.
- Yet most of those same folks STILL play the games more than a 'single level demo' or 'system check'.
- Therefore they are stealing - and killing PC/Mac gaming.

So ... go ahead and pirate,
- So long as you are willing to stand up and admit " *I* am the reason for StarForce, SecuROM, and UBISoft's new DRM"
- So long as you are willing to stand up and admit " *I* am the reason why NO ONE develops for PC first anymore"
- So long as you are willing to stand up and admit " *I* am the reason why so many great PC gaming studios have gone out of business, and others have become console-first"

game developers

... its clear there are people pushing for games to run on mac. The whole steam/valve thing inspired the graphics updates that see some games running at 100+ FPS. The issue is licensing and the trap mac licensing has fallen into. Because of the segregated mac porting market most publishers don't even run the apple logo in the list of platforms. Pardon me.. let me correct myself... iPhone/iOS versions are now found on the lists of simultaneous releases. Proving they know how to make an os x game native. Its the same

The port game has become its own entity where the people developing for os x have no alternative than to work for companies like transgaming, aspyr, and Feral. (actually I think thats pretty much the only 3 doing it) Transgaming using cider which is a bizarro version of wine, Aspyr making full native ports that sometimes just don't run well and feral also making native ports I believe.

This causes game release delays often times years later. I think Blizz and now Valve are going to be the only big company to release games on both platforms at the same time. If companies like BioWare had also picked up the torch then it would encourage apple to make their consumer machines more game friendly. Maybe even find a way to switch graphics cars in iMacs. MAybe encourage Graphics Card and motherboard manufacturers to design a new interchangeable card method that suits the smaller mobile devices.

now i'm rambling

Hey all,
When do you think MW 2 will be out for mac? I doubt it would come out in (November?) when the xbox/pc version comes out but I reckon it will not be as long as COD 4 took since aspyr seem to be more mac devoted now...

Any Thoughts?

Never. Sorry.

How's the air up there on that high horse you seem to be on?

Gimme a break...pirating didnt do that to Mac Gaming or PC Gaming. It seems to be quite healthy if you can take a constantly rising line on a chart of gaming profits for the last 20 years...

people who pirate and dont ever pay-up...were NEVER going to pay in the first place. Thats no lost sale at all.

Yes, runs perfectly.

Depends on the company of course, Blizzard has bought my (and many other mac users) undying loyalty by always dual-releasing on Mac with native ports that run just as well as their windows version.

Unfortunately, many other companies don't have the same standards as Blizzard, so I stick to my PS3 for a lot of my gaming (I can't stand rebooting to play a game, especially not by putting windows on my iMac). That said, I had no problems running CoD4 on my mac, though I still prefer the PS3 version. It's hard to say when they'll port it to the Mac, probably not at the same time as the PC/PS3/360 version, so I'd recommend getting a console if you want it at launch. It'll probably be a decent port when they get around to it though.
well ur lucky u had no probz running cod4. when i got cod4 and ran it, i got up to the mission "heat" in act 2 and wen i tried to load it my game crashed. it turns out that the file for heat was not even in the data folder >.< so apple can either suck my dick or start actually TRYING when they make their games cuz i bet they w8 half a year and say oh i forgot i hafta make that game! and then theyll forget again and rush to make it and its crap so apple if u read this start trying to make games properly and not like people who cant make games. btw id say byond.com ahs better games and its all 2d

Um ... COD4 is not made by Apple.

Oh, and this is not a text messaging service.

Priceless. I would love to hear your views on politics.

Macs have never been and will never be good machines for gaming. Accordingly, there is no such thing as Mac Gaming. It's always been an illusion, fueled with poorly performing, bad ports of Windows games and promoted by fanboys who don't know any better and have never played on a real gaming rig. The framerates that even the fastest Mac Pro creates are average at best when compared to the graphics power of a middle-sized gaming PC.

In other words: It just doesn't make sense to wait for a Mac version of a game. It will perform worse than the original, have more bugs, cost more and be years late.

Personally, I can only live with Macs because I have an Xbox 360 and a Windows license for my Mac Pro for those few (usually older) titles that don't have Xbox versions or that are strategy games like Civilization IV (whose Mac port by Aspyr sucks rocks, by the way).

My advice is this: Buy the Windows or Xbox version of that game, have fun with it and be happy. Don't waste your money on "supporting" Mac Gaming. If those guys delivered quality ports in a timely manner, my advice would be different. But such as it is, Mac Gaming is a dead horse.

Blizzard Entertainment. Thank you.

I do not understand the "blued" statements.

Most people pirate because they don't have the money to get every game legally, heck if I was a millionaire I would not only buy the game but I would donate money to Modern Warfare's developers. Money is spent towards rent and food for most people, people often don't have the extra money to buy games, pirating them until they have a surplus amount of money to spend is the way to go.

Money is spent towards rent and food for most people, people often don't have the extra money to buy games, pirating them until they have a surplus amount of money to spend is the way to go.

The 'blued' statements say that since video games aren't a 'need', nor even a 2nd or 3rd tier 'want', they are a superfluous luxury. So pirating a game is a rationalization for getting something that is not remotely important to living life. If food and rent are so draining to your ability to survive, video games shouldn't even register. Therefore I call BS.

In order to play games like Modern Warfare or most recent games that are so heavily pirated you need a very powerful computer, which is therefore expensive. That in itself (at least in every western country, I know in some asian countries this isn't true) completely invalidates the argument. If you have paid $1500 for a Crysis-capable PC, crying poor for the $50 game in absurd. Again, BS.

If money was so tight, run a nice old P4 system you can get for $100 which will run all of those games on sale every week for $5 at Steam, GamersGate, Direct2Drive, etc.

But since those people STILL pirate, part of the response from publishers is to implement draconian measures to inhibit the ease of pirating, especially during the first month or so when it happens the most.

QED, entitled pirates crying poor while pirating top-end games are the direct cause of all of those 'blued' items.

As are you.

What am I doing wrong?

Great discussion on the ethics of pirating guys. Really fascinating.

To get closer back to the topic at hand, I could use some help. I've been playing MW1 on my MacBook Pro, 4GB, NVIDIA 9400M graphics. I get usually about 10 minutes of good game play tops before my system starts to overheat and the FPS plummets. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks.

POOR advice here!

Obviously, this "Winni" guy is pretty happy using Windows for gaming. That's fine, and sure, he's correct that right now - more titles come out for Windows, and the ones for both PC and Mac don't come to Mac as quickly, 99% of the time. (Any games released by Blizzard would be exceptions, as they release simultaneously for both platforms whenever they come out with something.)

But the suggestion Mac users shouldn't buy Mac versions of games that become available for them? That's insanity, IMO. If you're one of the people who spent the money for a higher-end Mac (like a Mac Pro or Macbook Pro notebook, or even one of the high-end iMacs), you have no reason you can't play modern games on it enjoyably!

If nobody buys the Mac ports of games, it just tells developers it's reality that Mac users don't WANT games on their systems.

I've bought pretty much all the worthwhile native Mac titles offered via Steam and they all play just fine for me! Sure, frame-rates might not benchmark as high as the Windows versions, but they're all I need for smooth, fun gaming. I suggest some of these "PC gamers" get over their need to have bragging rights about who has the highest frame-rate, and who can run their game well in some high resolution that's total overkill! Frankly, that's just a huge waste of money, pouring money down the "upgrade treadmill" hole.

Then, these people often turn around and complain about how a Mac is overpriced! Glad I don't have THEIR priorities ....
