if you get bas model, you save even more (but think about it, if you do any video or photography editing),
I'm using Dell U2412M for 2 weeks and it;s brilliant, brightens and sharpness is really good, I had iMac 20' but this monitor is much better than that. Note: it is used by professionals and recommended

Thanks for that. I don't do any video or heavy photography editing, perhaps a bit of iPhoto work. Main non-standard use will be using Parallels or Fusion but even that to a limited extent for non-intensive tasks.

It seems after trolling around the forums for a bit that the Dell seems like the go-to option for most people.

I am probably going to plump for either the 24" or 23", maybe the latter to watch movies and shows without the black bars and save some money.

On Amazon it says there is a 'newer' version of the 23 inch, but it looks the same. This is a mistake right?

Yeah there are two entries for 23' on Amazon which is a bit cheaper than the Dell site. one for approx £150 and another approx £175. It says the £175 is newer but I can't see any difference in spec. Check the link:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-Ultras...1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1355316506&sr=1-1

yeah, also i had a difficulties to choose between 23 or 24 for £50-60 actually it's considerable amount. but don't remember all the point to go with 24, but one of the Pros was 16.10 i guess this monitor is 16.7 or 16.9?
go for it dude, incase of any issues amazon changes or refund without problem.
also I won't be buy new monitor or mac mini next at least 2-3 years, thats is why got little bigger specs.
someone mentioned above about Asus monitor, this monitor is good for Windows machines, I have used it last year for 3-4 days, it's annoys when you use it with mac (i used with MBP)

The cost isn't that much in difference and it's the essentially the same thing and I would never ever notice the difference between the two. I'll just have to decide whether I want or need the extra height or whether I prefer to have a 16:9 ratio screen that matches the native iMac resolution and leaves no borders while watching movies and videos.

As long I'm able to view two things side by side, e.g. a Word document and a webpage/pdf I'm happy. Both will achieve these, just one will require a bit more scrolling.

I think it will end up depending on how I feel on the day I buy it!

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate it.

I am planning to purchase the Dell 23" ultrasharp monitor U2312HM from Amazon UK to use with my Mac Mini (2011 model). Currently using a Dell 17.5" monitor from my old Dell PC which is a bit too small when using Lightroom to manage photographs without constant scrolling.

The ultasharp has DVI-D and VGA ports (cables supplied for both in the box) and also has a displayport. Which connection would give best results on the ultrasharp with the MacMini?

I am currently using the apple mini display port to VGA adaptor plugged into the Thunderbolt port to connect the 17.5" monitor via its VGA cable.
So I could use the VGA cable without having to purchase a new adaptor but wondered if using the displayport or DVI-D would give better results?

Is there a particular DVI-D to HDMI cable/adaptor recommended so I could use the HDMI port in the mini (so Thunderbolt is free for something else) - Amazon UK have a few listed but not sure if one is better than the others.

Many thanks

I am running 2 of those with my mini, along with 2 Dell 24" monitors.

The 2312 is a great choice. I also have the bigger brother, 2412, as my main monitor. It's working fantastic.

I would recommend using a digital connection over the VGA. You will get better results: Response time, colors, etc. will all be better using DP>DVI or HDMI>DVI connections.

I purchased the Monoprice HDMI>DVI cable (6ft) from Amazon and it's working perfectly, with no adapter in line.

In the market for a new monitor and I am considering the Asus 27 PB278Q. I'd like to know if the display has a heavy AG coating like on the Dell U2412M? Do you have any stuck or dead pixels?

No it has a very nice coating. If you watch the reviews on you tube you will see people say the same. I don't think I have any stuck or dead pixels. I think someone else with one of these said he had one or two which is the limit. I can't see any defects on mine. Buy from Amazon and return for any reason anyways for free!

I think I'm going to go ASUS PB278Q. I tried the Dell U2713HM before and it had some "cross hatching" issues I couldn't deal with (due to the AG coating I believe). Apparently the Asus doesn't have this issue.

Korean 27" Monitors

I have been reading Lifehacker's best monitors article and Yamakasi Catleap(27" and 2560x1440) caught my attention for its low price and high resolution. I've made some research and there are a number of other brands from South Korea that are around $300-350 range on Ebay that have fairly good reviews by people on the internet.

Anybody have any experience using one of these monitors with their Mac Mini? From my understanding, you need to have a Dual-Link DVI cable which Apple sells for $100.

Is this cable necessary to hook these monitors up to Mac Mini? Are there other cheap alternatives?

I have the 2012 Mac Mini btw.

Anything over 1920x1080 requires a DVI-D-Dual Link cable. 4.00 from Monoprice.

could some post a picture of a monitor with some dead pixels, I'm wondering if it would bother me.

Pretty much something you'd have to see in person I think. Besides, dead pixels are far less obvious with standard usage than stuck pixels, IMO.

I'm in your shoes with a 2012 mac mini looking at monitors. I have seen none of the Korean monitors first hand. The Crossover supposedly has the best build quality. I think you are right most would require the $100 cable. Some such as the crossover gold led has multiple inputs dualport, hdmi, ?. and speakers I think it costs maybe $100???more but you wouldn't need the $100 dual-link DVI adapter. Seems that i also read the models with the extra inputs have higher lag?/response? times, whatever that means, and idon't want built in speakers. I think microcenter my stock a/ or some korean monitors but i am not close to a microcenter. I just bought a westinghouse 24" 1080p monitor for $169 just so i can play with the mini until i decide which monitor to buy. keep in touch

I'm not close to any microcenter either but I'm really interested in these monitors, I might just pull the plug and get one in a couple months and let you know. I now have a 24 inch AOC but I'm not quite happy with the picture quality, the colors aren't very satisfying(compared to my 27inch iMac at work)

Does your ASUS PB278Q fail to wake from sleep with your 2012 Mac Mini?

I will check later today.

Naw, I am going to keep it. For a monitor of such high resolution and pixel density i think it is going to be hard for me to receive a perfect monitor from amazon (esp with the way they do monitor shipping). Honestly, i've been using it for a couple weeks now and I can't even see the dead pixel. It's a dead red sub pixel anyways, so its incredibly hard to see even when the screen is pure white, black, green or blue.

Have you had any problems with your ASUS PB278Q failing to wake from sleep?

yes and No. Sometimes it's instant but other times it takes a while to wake up. Sometimes you have to circle and click the mouse quickly for 5 seconds to get it to wake.

So would you recommend this monitor to someone looking to use it with a 2012 mini?

Korean monitors are a good deal

In order to get full use of these display 2560 X 1440 resolution, you need the appropriate interface. If you use the mini DP to HDMI adapter you will be stuck at 1920 X 1200, what a waste if your monitor supports greater resolutions. I suggest purchasing at minimum the mini DP to DVI adapter at $30 so that you can get the 2560 X 1440 resolution. I went even better interface and am using a mini DP to Display Port cable which has a higher transfer rate and passes audio if so inclined to use. I have the Yamakasi Q271 Retina display, it is so sweet in this configuration as this model has Display Port interface. Both CrossOver, Achieva and Yamakasi have models with display port interface. I highly recommend going with these models over use of bulky DVI connections. Bought mine here in Korea for 500,000 KWon ($482).

I recently upgraded to the 2012 Mac Mini from a late 2009 21.5" iMac. I had planned on getting the new iMac, but came to the conclusion that the Mini was a better option for me. As far as the monitor was concerned, I knew I wanted it to have an IPS panel, displayport, and be at least 24". I wanted a resolution of 1920x1200, or better yet, 2560x1440. I narrowed my choices down to these:

Apple Thunderbolt Display
Dell U2412M
Dell U2713HM
HP ZR2440w
HP ZR2740w
Asus PA248Q
Asus PB278Q

I went to a local computer store to view the above monitors in person. After spending about an hour comparing them, I purchased the HP ZR2440w. The Dell U2412M was cheaper and I almost bought it, but to me the HP seemed better made and more aesthetically pleasing. I love the ATD, but decided not to put that much money into it right now. I was very tempted to get the HP ZR2740w for $699. It is a very nice display, but at twice the price of the ZR2440w, for me it wasn't worth it.

After getting home and setting up the display, I'm glad I went with the 24" monitor. The 27" monitors would probably look a little silly on my small desk.
