I have the exact same issues as described in this thread. Have you tried this enclosure yet?

I found this suggestion in this thread https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...nclosure.2283434/?post=30642514#post-30642514

I ordered one and I will post my experience as soon as I have it.
I haven't tried that specific one, so let us know. But I've tried a bunch of USB->SATA adapters and enclosures, and most combinations I've tried so far actually work, so maybe you'll get lucky with that one too. I just have a couple bad adapters so far (like the Sabrent/JMicron 1561:152d 2.04) so I think we really need to make a list of all known unsafe ones, as well as tested and safe ones.

I do not recommend this box. When the mac is asleep, this box still works. It has a bad controller installed.

And as a warning to those out there who might only be trying to solve the format/erase problem-- don't use a workaround and then trust that setup to keep your data safe. If it's having trouble with the format/erase, it's an early sign of a corruption that could occur later too. If you work around it by, for instance, formatting the drive on a different machine, you're just asking for trouble later when something leads to the right combination to cause data loss. If you're seeing these errors, then stop, make sure your data is safely backed up with something else, and try to find an adapter and drive combination that formats quickly and without any errors. I recommend running something that blasts high-speed writes and overwrites to the drive for about 15 minutes after formatting it, to make sure it's working correctly. (I used the Blackmagic Speed Test) That's where I saw errors still show up even if I got past the format, and once errors show up from this, the entire APFS becomes corrupted and unusable. Just don't leave such a test running too long, since you're wearing out the total lifetime of your SSD also.

Some additional data points: I tried a Leven JS-600 4TB SSD instead of the Crucial MX500 4TB, to see if the bug was at all related to some interaction with the specific SSD. It still had the same problems formatting when used with my faulty Sabrent/Jmicron adapters (1561:152d v2.04 which also forces 4K sector emulation)

I also still hit problems with the Sabrent/VIA (0715:2109 v0.00) although that one seems to format APFS okay. It even let me run the Blackmagic speed test for a while. But then when I unmounted it, unplugged it, and plugged it back in, it appeared to mount and then went read-only. And then after another unmount/remount, it just gives errors now and won't mount. So make sure you unmount and remount a disk (with a physical unplug/replug) a couple times before you actually trust it with any of your data. (and even then, have backups elsewhere)

OK, for those who may have the same problem in the future, here is the solution. It seems to be the special combination of hard drive enclosure/macOS10.12+/Samsung 8TB QVO. I have tried several USB-C enclosures with the Samsung QVO 8TB in combination with macOS Monterey and Ventura, all with the same result: the data system was broken after I ejected the disks, sometimes already while I played a video file. Most of the time formatting was only possible outside macOS.

I then read through this, this and this thread and finally ordered this enclosure. Now the two Samsung QVO 8TB disks work under Monterey/Ventura as they did with the other enclosures under Big Sur. And why a combination of all three things? As soon as I put a non QVO disk from Samsung into the old enclosure, it works normally under Monterey/Ventura. But since the problem already exists since Monterey, and Apple was apparently already pointed out several times, I see rather black that this bug will be fixed in macOS.

Anyway, now the disks are running again and I can update to the current operating system. Because of this bug in Monterey/Ventura I have been working with Big Sur until today.

Can you tell us specifically the make and and model of the enclosure that was broken? If possible, knowing the exact chipset and firmware revision would be very useful to know. You can go under "about this mac / system report" and find the USB section and find your enclosure under there and it will show Product ID, Vendor ID, and Version.

Also, when you said that a non-QVO disk worked, can you be more specific? Which model, and which size?

Thanks!
