The desire, looks very laggy. Glitchy. Ehhh it would be good if those parts of it were fixed.

We've only seen demo units so far, chances are most of the issues will be solved before release.

I wouldn't call them "letdowns", they weren't amazing, but they both added things that the first didn't, like 3G, GPS, and video

The first iPhone was amazing, so some people expected future iPhones to be amazing too..but as it goes they're just evolutionary not revolutionary.

Is there a date of release? Do you personally think once it's ready it's going to be as smooth as the iPhone current OS? Or maybe even smoother? By the loks of things it's definitely going to need some work.

It has a snapdragon processor and twice the RAM; if anything it's going to be a lot BETTER than the iPhone OS.

It looks fine in some of the demo units, but not so good in others... that's because they're demos! :D

It looks fine in this hands on video (scroll down)

It's a shame that the cameras on the N1/Droid/whatever suck. I think I'd still seriously consider the N1 if it were released in Canada (obviously after seeing the iphone update of course).

Processor and hardware have nothing to do with the os.
You can have the best hardware out there and if the os is junk it's a failure.
Look at bb and their poor attempts on touch screen devices.

What competition?

I am also a phone addict and I'm all eyes now with the Mobile Congress news and updates. But an iPhone competition? Where? Even if you'll give me a 1terabyte phone with Samsung's new SuperAMOLED, 2gb RAM, 15mpx with Xenon flash, 4ghz quad-core processor, OpenGL ver.5, etc etc etc... but have an App Store with only 500 apps, that is NOT competition. Today I was playing Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed 2, NOVA (Halo-ish), Need For Speed: Shift and Plants vs Zombies in the iPhone. Now give me a phone that can give me the same entertainment value and we'll talk. And don't get me started on non-game apps. :D

i hope iphone goes all out this year and blows us away with crazy features!

I agree - but HTC sense isn't junk. It's smooth on the HTC Hero, which has much lesser hardware than the HTC Desire.

The Desire has a significantly better processor and double the RAM, so even if HTC Sense isn't quite as efficient as iPhone OS, it has the hardware to make up for it.

Android marketplace has just under 30,000 apps, that probably has anything you want too!

The app store might have 140,000+ apps, but how many of those are actually any good? When I had an iPhone I remember seeing about 5 different "iFart" variations.

Its not all competition its called catch up...other companies are trying to close the gap on Apple but as we all know as soon as they think they are getting closer Apple whips out something more advanced...

It's Apple who has to play catch up mate... the iPhone still has a 3 MP camera (I know all about the "megapixel myth," but the iPhone camera just isn't special), still can't multitask, still has average speakers, still has an average screen. The only thing Apple is ahead with is the app store.

My Contract is up in march I'm looking into geting a new phone the question is can i hold of till june or should i just get the 4G the only thing i can see that Apple will do next gen phone wise make a 5mp camera and possibly add a faster procsessor the thing i think will be the key more is what does the next OS does imo.

the iphone camera takes better shots than the n1/droid/whatever. I'd think that's at least a little special. Their also ahead in having a perfectly fluid and quality OS. It has the best music player, it has the best on screen keyboard, and so on. You're giving it too little credit.

Nexus One wins?

Best music player? You can create and sort your playlists on the actual device with the N1. With Apple you have to sync everything from your computer, which is a massive pain in the ass if you want to change things while you're out and about with your MOBILE phone.

I recently got a Droid and I really enjoy it. It's quick, the OS is slick, and it does everything I want. I realized a while back that Apple is never going to change its ways so I just moved on to other devices. I recommend to the other people frustrated with Apple's restrictions to stop giving Steve your hard earned money and give Android a shot. Jailbreaking is not a solution for me, I don't like hacking my device to get the functionality I need. Multitasking is the big thing for me, I just can't live with a unitasking device especially in the year 2010.

I seriously doubt it. Simple features which are available on dumb phones were missing on the original iPhone and took too long to finally implement them. As long as Steve Jobs decides what consumers want and need were not going to get blown away, instead Apple will spoon feed the most basic features.

Why do people keep saying that but when you look at the facts and the history of the previous 2 iPhone OS updates it shows other wise.

Orginal iPhone 1.0. That blew people away not going to argue that.

iPhone 2.0 and 3.0 lets look at them
Hardware updates (keeping pace with the times so not doing anything special )
Added in missing features that should of been there since iPhone 1.0. Things like Video recording, MMS, Voice controls, copy paste,. Things that were years late.

The biggest thing apple added as the app store.

What makes people think that 4.0 will be any different. Releasing iPhone on other carriers would be big not not impressive. If they add in multiasking that would be another feature over 2 years late.

I just want to know what makes people think that it will be a WOW thing. Hardware updates and adding in features that are already late is not Wow.

Good post. The first iPhone was "revolutionary" as Jobs put it, and he was right. I have had the 2g and 3g. I feel like Apple has just been riding on that success and popularity. I find it sad that they have not updated the phone to keep up with others and continue to use the reputation to sell phones. Although this is a great business practice, if they do not do something that does have the WOW factor with the right specs for the 4g I will be highly disappointed and have to leave. Just my opinion.

Revolutionary? I don't know. It certainly sold and was popular but for me in 2007 I would have had to take a step back:

In 2007 I had:
Bluetooth with AVRCP and A2DP, would have had to give that up

Cut and paste, would have had to give that up

Outlook synch, don't know if first gen could do this

Music, choice of music players with better features and better equalizer,

Music synch, nope, not as simple as Itunes, however drag and drop is not that hard.

No voice recorder

No Slinging

And before there is allot of: Well I don't use bluetooth, doesn't matter. The fact is it was out there and people were using some of the above.

Appstore, I don't think there was an app store at first, however I had mutiple sources for Apps, like Handango. And no, Handango does not have 140,000 apps, however they existed in 2007 and we had some choice.

Better browser, probally Safari, however what was the network used, Edge?

Not knocking the first gen, but for folks that had the above, going to a first gen was going backward. I do find fault with other manufacturers of phones, why did they have to be so big and thick, iphone first gen form factor was definitely revolutionary, and so was the UI. However for me UI is now a bit cumbersome.

an iPod touch does the job but what good is having those games and apps on a phone if you have to close them out to answer a text message, email or use another app?

The first gen was amazing in some ways, but it had many shortcomings:

- Could only send a text to one person at a time! If you wanted to send it to someone else you'd have to retype it as it had no copy/paste/forwarding/drafts folder
- Speakers were poor, which resulted in hard to hear ringtones/alerts, and the phone was almost impossible to use in a busy street/next to a road
- Aluminium case degraded phone signal
- No 3G/GPS
- No apps
- There was a bug until version 2.0 where the browser used to crash if you tried to browse/listen to music at the same time. At the time I was told by Apple forumers that I was "expecting too much" from a phone and I shouldn't expect to be able to use it like a desktop computer

Multi-touch is probably the "revolution" that Apple has given us; it's so easy to use and so useful at the same time.

Thanks for filling in the blanks.
In regard to "At the time I was told by Apple forumers that I was "expecting too much" from a phone and I shouldn't expect to be able to use it like a desktop computer" its called "applescuse", what apple fans use to exonerate any shortcomings in apple products. They tend to spread that applesauce on thick and heavy:D

I have to say multitasking is a must for me now and if the new iPhone doesn't have it then I won't be buying it.
