More choices for excellent post processing tools. Today Luminar was released for Mac by Macphun. www.macphun.com. Next week On1 Software will release their Photo Raw app to those who have preordered it. It will be available to the general public in early December. https://www.on1.com/products/photo-raw/ The point is the options far exceed Apple's Aperture or Photos and Adobe's Lightroom, Photoshop, and Photoshop Elements. Experiment and find the tools that best fit your needs.

The DAM is in their development plan. When On1 releases Photo RAW, try the trial. It will have browser that gives you much of DAM capabilities without the database. It is up to you to put your images into folders, no automated import like there is in Lr.

From what I can see in both Luminar and Photo RAW......speed. No spinning beach balls waiting for previews to be built.

Ui, that's good to hear. Do you have any link to more info on a time line or so? Is the DAM going to be part of Luminar or is it going to be a separate product.

I'm eagerly awaiting the ON1 Photo RAW release. I've stopped using LR and have been using the current ON1 Photo 10.5. Other than raw processing, it's a great stable app with lots of potential. The new RAW should be much better.

Looks like it will be part of Luminar.

  • Is it a Lightroom alternative?
It really depends on the types of images you are producing and your individual preferences. The capabilities of Lightroom are very good and many enthusiasts and professionals already have an established workflow using Lightroom.

Luminar will “plug-in” nicely to that process. It already brings a number of tools that are not available in LR, and allows you to perform complex edits that CC users currently perform in Photoshop. Our plan is to add new tools and features every 1-2 months to make Luminar more powerful than any other software in terms of photo editing features.

Truth to be told, at this moment Luminar doesn't include an image library or any kind of photo browsing experience. So Luminar for Mac can not be considered a LR alternative for those who host photos with LR, or have an established workflow with Adobe CC. But in the future we plan to add the browsing and asset management capabilities to Luminar.

Agreed. I am so very much tired of Lr spinning beach balls and waiting for previews to be built and then deleted in X days. That approach is way too old.

What's the difference between Luminar and Macphun's Creative Kit Pro software? I rather don't get their re-mixing of existing tools.

Suggest you go to their site and read the FAQs and maybe do a trial.

  • What is the difference between Luminar and Creative Kit?
Luminar was created to become a one-stop solution for a wide range of photographers. At the same time, Luminar is fully integrated with Creative Kit apps, so you can easily export your photos directly from Luminar to any of the Creative Kit plug-ins.

  • Can I replace Aperture with Luminar?
Yes, if you’re talking about the photo editing part of Aperture app (or any other software). Luminar brings one of the industry’s best selection of photo tools to enhance images. At the same time Aperture (just like Lightroom) is often used as an Asset Management tool, and this is what Luminar is missing for now. So if you keep your files in the Aperture or Lightroom library, then use Luminar editor as the plug-in to get a myriad of new tools to edit, enhance and fix your photos. If you keep your photos elsewhere, and use Aperture (or Lightroom) to only edit photos, then give Luminar an even closer look and consider it as the replacement.

  • What is the difference between Aurora HDR and Luminar?
Aurora HDR is dedicated to only one photography style - HDR photography. And it is the world’s most advanced photo software for this kind of photography. Luminar is a universal photo editor, designed to perform a wide variety of image editing tasks. So if you want perfect HDR results, then nothing beats Aurora HDR app. And if you want to get perfect portraits, landscapes, aerial photos and more - you should get Luminar for Mac.

  • Does it work as a plug-in?
Luminar works as the plug-in for Apple Aperture photo editor, Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. It is also an Apple Photos extension for those of you who now use Photos to organize and manage photo assets. We don’t plan to make Luminar a plug-in to other software, besides those above. But we plan to allow other software work as Luminar plug-ins. Plus we are working on the image browsing/management add-on to Luminar, so you can comfortably use it as the standalone software.

I just got this email this morning. Odd that a crop tool won't be out until the 'full' release. Other than that, I'm excited for a new and updated program.

I sort of lost interest in On1's RAW. Part of the issue, for me, is they pre-announced it too early. Now they more-or-less restrict its availability. Not to mention it's still a work in process. Some of the release notes below. More choices are nice. For me, RAW in its current state, is not a choice.

Features Still to Come in the General Release

  • Importing and converting of presets from legacy versions of Effects
  • Crop tool
  • Navigator/Loupe/Histogram panes
  • Reading compressed Fujifilm Raw files
  • Photoshop extension panel
Features That Will Improve with the General Release

  • More supported cameras
  • Improved Shadows and Highlights ranges
  • Brushing quality
  • Transitions between modules and photos will be smoother
  • Additional bug fixes and performance enhancements

Not to mention it's still a work in process.

All products are a work in progress until they are retired. It is guess of how much progress and how rapidly.;)

I watched te launch event sessions yesterday. On1 will likely make them public this week. I can't wait to for the day in 2017 when we get the migration tool from Lr. :D

It seems from all the recent videos and the event yesterday, that we might have to keep Photo 10.5 around until the full release. I'm not too bothered, as I don't run a business in photography. I can understand the hesitation though.

Definitely I keep 10.5 until December when the official RAW release can import all the presets and textures from 10.5. Then I will delete 10.5. If all goes well, I will delete Lr and Ps in 2017 if the migration tool works.

I haven't got the email notification, but found it under my products list. Just installed it and waiting for it to finish indexing all 22k photos.....

I also downloaded a trial of Macphun's Luminar. Looks like it great editor, with DAM functions coming later. I did also try Affinity Photo. That was cumbersome and not too intuitive.

Well, after a day of using the new Photo Raw, I'd have to say it's got potential. This is a pre-release version, maybe even less than a 'beta' version. Some features are disabled or just aren't implemented. It's a bit slow and can get unresponsive. It does process raw files rather well, even though ON1 is still working on highlight and shadow processing.
There's still a lot of work that needs to be done.

Here's a sample of how the new program does. It's not leveled - because that tool / feature isn't enabled yet. It did very well considering this photo was originally very dark and seemed out of focus.

I have to admit, the aesthetics of Luminar are amazing, I really like the way it looks. What a pity it doesn't have DAM capabilities.

The DAM is in the works. The challenge is that the LR DAM is a standard for many. And the Aperture DAM is simply amazing in my humble opinion. So we need to make something better and more advanced. Frankly, it is not a simple task:) But we try.

Luminar has more tools and is an all in one solution. If you email support@macphun.com, they will give you all the details. And here's a comparison of Luminar and LR, Aperture editing tools: macphun.com/luminar/compare

Interesting topic. I have started testing on1 yesterday right after they released the early version and I will share my thoughts soon. I have used their perfect photo suite a bit in the past, it is ok.

Fantastic, another Aperture lover!
Well, that put me over the top. Words are cheap as they say, so let me help fund development: I just bought a license for Luminar. And if you really do make a DAM module, please don't forget to charge for it.

I was playing with both Luminar and Photo RAW early yesterday when I started to notice strange behavior. My rMBP was no longer charging. I tried both PRAM and SMC resets to no avail. so I had to take it to the Apple and they verified it was at least the MagSafe board. They sent it out for repair. With luck I get it back Tuesday. Thank goodness I have AppleCare as the repair cost would have been $575!

So I look forward to feedback from others until I can rejoin the testing activities next week.

Hi all. As u know I found this topic last night and got very excited because I seriously consider buying the On1 new editor. I tried pre-released version against the Lightroom and have mixed feelings. These are straight from the library photos with no edits. I like how LR handled the Raw files but with on1 I am getting artifacts and blown highlights. Maybe I am doing something wrong since on1 advertise the software as the Raw processor first of all, so it should handle Raw better. Maybe it is just because the version is not final. But for now I will not place the order, need to wait until this is fixed. Also I will try Photo Raw on other photos and share feedback. Thank you. Clint.

These are the files. on1 on the left and LR on the right. See how some areas are blown out.

On this photo the left (on1) photo is darker and out of focus. Not sure why. LR is just fine.
