There is also Exposure X2 : http://www.alienskin.com/exposure/

I've not tried this new version, but X1 was very promising when I trialled it earlier in the year. The raw image conversion did not match LR then, but it was close and the speed was brilliant - it made returning to use LR feel even slower than it already is!

i am surprised no one has mention Capture One. Really like their RAW development module.

Maybe because C1P is not new. Luminar and Photo RAW are new choices.
Capture One just released version 10.
Capture One Blog

Looks fairly impressive, a lot of work seems to be done in the image editing area, but some minor and welcome improvements for catalog management.

I did not realize that as a Sony camera owner, I could get a 'free' version of Capture One. I downloaded it last week and have been duly impressed by it's raw processing. I've recovered some photos I thought I'd never be able to use.
I like it so much, I paid the $50 to upgrade to the Pro version.

Yeah, its strange that you get it for free - I'm not sure why, but its a nice benefit to be sure.

Luminar used an absolutely insane amount of ram. I tried to do a composite with two small jpegs stacked with opacity and a couple adjustment layers and the programs started using over 4GB of Ram and made me hard reset my mac.

I'm eagerly awaiting the ON1 Photo RAW release. I've stopped using LR and have been using the current ON1 Photo 10.5. Other than raw processing, it's a great stable app with lots of potential. The new RAW should be much better.
Are they going to cancel the existing Photo 10.5 product when they release Raw? It seems confusing.

I doubt Lr will ever do some of the features you've mentioned in the analysis of Photo RAW and Luminar. Layers, for example. That's what Ps is for. I guess many here only have the Lr stand-alone so perhaps a layer capable add-on to Lr would be great (I think the easier to use layers in Macphun's stuff are great, even though I do have Ps and use it for more complicated stuff). A notch above Luminar and Photo RAW is of course Affinity Photo; it has some cool new focus stacking features for example. But I doubt any of these will approach Lr in the DAM end of things. Even C1P took forever to get just hierarchical keywords, and Mylio still doesn't have 'em.

But query why an Lr-like DAM is even necessary these days? One can do an awful lot of organizing with just something like Photo Mechanic, or even just Graphic Converter. And the Finder. And you can always use Lr for free, just sans the Develop, Map and Lr Mobile features. That leaves all you'd need to work around the absence of a DAM in DxO, Macphun, Photo RAW, Billy Bob's Bait and Photo Editor, etc. So stop waiting for that unicorn; it looks pretty but may not be that necessary.

"But query why an Lr-like DAM is even necessary these days?"

Because I don't want mess around with separate apps. Lightroom is still the one stop shop for Photography in my opinion. Unless you're doing specialty stuff like HDR, image compositing, or demand top end noise reduction and sharpening then you don't really need anything else.

Capture one is just as good but it's twice the price and doesn't have the support of Lightroom. i.e. no VSCO presets.

I would not intentionally use a Mac to do serious photo editing or other graphics work with less than 16GB of memory and a fusion drive, preferably an SSD to minimize read/write times and accessing caches and doing swaps. You could end up with lots of spinning beachballs.

Of course On1 will at some point stop selling 10,5. All companies stop selling previous generations when they release their latest version. We will see on the 19th when RAW is available to the public if 10.5 is no longer available as a sales object.

Raw is the successor to Photo though, right? I'm not sure if they're separate products or not. Is Photo Raw replacing everything?

As for the RAM issue... I don't think it has anything to do with my Mac. I can edit massive 16 bit Tiffs with layers and adjustments and only use about 1-2GB of RAM with Affinity or PS. Lightroom only uses about 2GB at most, then goes back down to ~800MB when done editing. There's no reason a small jpeg composite should use over 4GB. It seemed like a RAM leak, which isn't too surprising seeing as it's a new app.

Rather than ask me, go view the videos for yourself. Better still, download a trial.

Do you have a link for the trial, to be honest, I only see a buy option and their trials page doesn't offer Photo Raw.

Trial of RAW may not be available until Photo RAW has commercial release on the 19th. Folks in On1's Plus program and those that preordered RAW have the prerelease version until the 19th. So in the meantime, do some reading and watch the videos about it. With the commercial release we can import all our presets and textures from Photo 10.5 and delete any old releases.
