The Lumia 520 is cheap tat, really. There's a reason Windows Phone has just 3% market share.

Lumia 520 is $59: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...-520-for-AT-T-+-Free-Case/productID.300181200

And I don't care about market share. Android does not run well on low end hardware. Windows Phone does. To the point that one might think they are getting a much more advanced device.

Hell, the 520 is a smoother experience than the Galaxy S4, which was a flagship device barely a year old.

With 8.1 it's even better.

Hey, if you're happy with it... Just that few will agree with you. I wouldn't use a Lumia 520 if they paid ME sixty dollars. :) old device, low-res sucky screen and all.

Its utter crap compared with a Moto G.

Maybe wait until there are some hands on before bashing it huh, i know you can't help but bash everything with Android installed on it but still try and restrain yourself...

Dude try to educate yourself before judging people ... I most probably owned much more android devices than you (in this exact moment there are 4 in my house, including the nexus 7 I use on daily basis ) ...
Every single android device with low specs is just a joke, because the os can't be optimized on a specific hardware ...

Things have changed; 4.4 is designed specifically to allow lower end specs to run it. Have you used Moto G in real life?

The important specs are very close to a Galaxy s2 which ran pretty damn well if i remember correctly even with touchwiz, i can imagine this phone with plain Android which is tailored for lower spec devices would run fine. So i'm prepared to wait until there is at least 1 hands-on video of it before writing it off..

That myth about 4.4 is just a lie: I'm using it with a 2 GB device and it is the minimum acceptable.
Moto G was a good cheap phone, six months ago, and still is, with a price reduction. A phone with lower specs than it in second half of 2014 is not acceptable and I don't know how tech enthusiast like you could defend it.

Pretty sure I would take the Moto E over the 520 simply for the apps. The 520 performs well for the specs but I would NEVER say it outperforms a Galaxy S4 and I'm not even a samsung fan. I was happy with the 520 as a replacement while my Nexus 4 was getting replaced but performance was never exactly amazing. Simply adequate. And I imagine that's how the Moto E will be. With the advantage of Androids ecosystem and Motorolas excellent customer support. Would like to get my hands on one. I don't expect to be blown away but I imagine it will be on par with the Lumia 520.

I bought the moto E with android kitkat 4.4 and was blown away. My previous experience with android , especially on lower end devices has been poor. I had used android on the galaxy s4 and found it to be laggy. Have been using iOS on my iphone 5 (and 4 before that) and have been extremely happy.
However the moto E does not lag at all! The apps may take slightly longer to load but I felt animation was very smooth. The device is fantastic . I have also not used android for long periods of time. Found the swype keyboard to be amazing. I can type pretty fast on my iphone but found swype to be equally fast (will probably get faster when I use it more)

I think kitkat is great and android is a fantastic OS. I did keep coming back to my iphone though - probably because of my comfort level with that system. I played around with widgets and launchers and keyboards and it was fun. At the end of the day still wanted to go back to my iphone.

I feel that in individual areas- android outshines iOS but as an overall package the iphone still holds its own. I think that fans of each system should give a decent trial and decide which one works for them.

Ordered.

Upgrading my GoPro memory card, and passing it down to this.

First Android device. 'iPod Touch' clone.
My iTunes library already synced with Google Music and ready to roll.

It won't work for my Airplay devices at home. But as a dedicated bluetooth headset player, dedicated car audio player. It has potential.

Its being returned.

Performance is good. Its dual core 1.2ghz cpu opened apps speedily, I never felt like I was waiting on apps to respond.

First, things that were crappy, but didn't bother me in the least.
-Display noticeably pixelated.
-Couldn't access my 5ghz network
-Camera low quality.

Second, things That were tolerable, but was disappointed Moto/Goog skimped.
- Touch laggy in games, e.g. Cut the rope.
- Keyboard laggy input.
- Many buttons took multiple presses to get a response, especially play store.
- No auto silent schedule
- World clock useless, couldn't add Bern (Swiss capital) or Geneva where fiance is for work. Like Goog never heard of Switzerland.
- The 4.3 phone felt smaller and more cramped than my 4" iPhone. E.g. Landscape typing hid more screen real estate than iOS. It genuinely felt cramped. 4.3" is not enough for Android. 4" is plenty for iPhone. Same for music app, it also felt cluttered compared to Music on iPhone.
- holding the . key didn't give .com shortcuts
- many other UI disappointments

Finally, the deal breakers.
-Could put very few things on SD card. I could put Google Play Music. I could put photos. I could NOT put dropbox, this is useless. I could not put Google Drive. Useless!
- cumbersome tap fest. Everything took way more effort than necessary. Controlling wifi/bluetooth noticeably more taps. Excess taps for navigating music. No share button in Chrome, lots a taps to email an address.

The SD Card limitations and cumbersome tap fest were the real sticklers that made me just not want to use the device.

I would agree. The Moto E pales in comparison to an iPod touch. But the touch is what? $299. Think that's what I paid for it a year and a half ago. It's a very refined device.

On a different note, with Moto assist you should be able to set an automatic silent schedule.

----------

Sounds like an excellent device at that price point, but I'm wondering how well does the G hold it's own with high end games?

The G does OK for the most part. The E however tends to lag in some games.

IPod Touch is $230 retail, $179 refurb with warranty.

Has 16GB usable storage. Good touch. Good OS. Easily worth the $50 premium.

My bad, I meant the E but yes, thanks for the info. I'm thinking of getting this phone for my 14 yr old son, so yeah, that would be a big issue with him.

I disagree android sucks with low end hardware.

My parent's moto g is smooth and snappy. granted they don't do heavy weight stuff like games. For people looking for a cheap good working phone, the $200 moto g is a very decent choice.

Not sure how the E compares to G. but if you are complaining about the performance on both devices, you should be looking at the higher end devices and pay more for it.

I was referring to the model with the rear camera

The E or the G? Personally I would spring for the G. It provides a much better experience for the extra $50

I had the E in mind but If the G offers a better gaming experience, I'm sure he would prefer the latter. Even though he's using my old iPhone 4 as an iPod, this would be his first smartphone and I want him to enjoy it.

The time in Bern and Geneva is the same as Berlin, which is on Google's clock. I agree the list is meh but easy workarounds.

Wifi and Bluetooth are very easy to control using the quick access menu thing (swipe from the top). Certainly as easy or easier than iOS.

Not sure about where the excess music taps are. I find Google Music much more pleasant than the iOS music player.

Share button on Chrome is under the menu button with all the other options?

I was looking at proposed UK pricing of £89 (presumably unlocked) versus £120-125 for an unlocked Moto G 8GB. In fact you can currently buy a pay as you go G/8GB for £100, and get a permanent unlock code for £2.

Obviously the E will sell for less than £89, but it's got to get close to £70 before it becomes tempting (unless the £30 is highly significant to you, of course).
Tesco Mobile Motorola Moto E™ Black - £69 with code

Amazing deal on the Moto E in the UK at the moment.
And there you have it. Bargain.

But... looking at this review, the Motos E & G are more differentiated than I thought. The downgraded camera functionality wouldn't bother me in the least (I'd be happy with a camera-less phone) but the lowered screen resolution would.

Yes, it took some google to,find alternative cities. Everything on it was an exercise in finding work arounds the software.

Wifi required swiping from top. Pressing the top right corner button. Tapping wifi button. That switches you over to networking app, a pause, then you can tap the on/off slider.

IOS is swipe from bottom. Tap wifi.

Waaaaaay different.

As for Chrome, don't have anymore, it wasn't an apparent immediate 1 tap from browser UI like Safari. Coworker confirmed no, said I'd have to manually select all copy and paste from location bar.

The quick way is to 2 finger swipe from the top to bring down the quick settings and long press the WiFi icon to turn it on or off.
