If it is bought in the US, there won't be tax added, but you will get penalized on VAT when it goes through UK customs. Normal 20%.

That said, I would wait 2 weeks and see if the Moto X drops during black Friday (last Friday of the month aka Thanksgiving). We keep seeing internet sales of $205 USD for off-contract MotoX (guessing these are gonna be black Friday prices). Best £130 quid (plus VAT) you will ever spend!

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/11/11/motorola-plans-low-cost-phone/

In the U.S., the phone will be cheaper, according to a source familiar with Motorola’s plans.

Using the same rate, (a guess):

Nexus 5 16GB is £299 in the UK (20% VAT included)
Nexus 5 16GB is $349 in the US

£160 / £299 = Moto G / $349

Moto G = $187 in the USA

If we use the UK Tesco £150 figure, then it would be $175 in the USA.

It could be $179, $189, or $199 in the USA.

Looks great to me for a 150 quid.

Bargain! Let's hope it's bootloader unlocked.

Definitely!

Good shout for my 15 year old cousin. He doesn't deserve top end smartphones, but something like this is a better fit.

Getting closer. This is rubbish compared to the X though. Come on Motorola ffs.

Nothing much at its price point that can compete. Give its price it may just get me out of the realm of pissing way 600 bucks on phones.

Yeah I'm at that point.

I love phones but had an epiphany when realising how much I spent on my iPhone 5 32gb.

I flat out refuse to pay that again.

I just picked up a Samsung Galaxy S4 which was 2 months old and in completely perfect condition for literally half the price of a 5S.

So much fail without an sd card, 16 gig needs to be a minium on any phone

There is a 16GB version thankfully. An SD Slot would have made them more appealing though I do agree.

I'd likely cope fine with all of my data on cloud services and unlimited data but not everyone is as prepared for the cloud on limited/expensive data plans and such.

If they are targeting developing countries with this, then lack of SD card is a big blunder.

People are going to point out the flaws of this device all over the web. But the fact of the matter is, this is probably the best budget Android phone. Decent specs, decent battery, decent resolution, running stock Android.

Most entry level Android phones that people buy because they are on a tight budget are typically crap phones. Low specs, no support, awful manufacturer skin.

This can ultimately help bring up the quality of entry level Android devices.

You guys are crazy. This is basically a Nexus 4 that you can buy outright for less than the price of a new iPhone with contract.

Will they sell a bunch of them? I think so. This will absolutely destroy the craigslist market for older used phones and probably hurt phone insurance scams -er i mean sales.

Lack of SD card isn't a huge problem... though it does complicate things if you are used to swapping them in and out. If you're in a developing country then you don't have uber fast internet or a personal computer to fill up an SD card quickly. Most of your storage will be taken up by photos and movies. 8 GB should suffice for the average user.

I think Motorola is doing it the right way.

How easily do you think it will be to get this device for those that live in the us before the January release?

People complain that it lacks lte or sd card or whatever. This is NOT a high end phone and it's not meant to be. Putting in all these options would increase it's price. It's a low price, great value phone that's going to sell loads.

My son (14) is looking for a new phone and this is what he's going to get. And you know what he'll be delighted with it.

Well done Google/Moto

The specs on this for the price are pretty good.

Consider this - last year my wife and I purchased a pair of HTC One V phones on VM...for $199/EA. That was a 3.7" screened, 1 GHZ SINGLE CORE, 512 mb ram phone.

My wife is looking for something cheap and better than her One V and this could fit the bill.

SMH @ the notion now that sd card in a phone is high end.

I'm disappointed this phone doesn't have the active notifications and always on google now. I would have easily paid $250-300 for those features personally. Hopefully I can buy a second hand Moto X for $275-300 soon. That said, this is a great phone for 90% of users. I hope this works out for Moto because I like the direction they're going in and hope the smartphone market follows suit.

Only problem is camera.

It doesnt record 1080p video, which is a MUST for me.

Otherwise I would have bought it.
