Apple has been very clear. a tablet is a touch device, you want a mouse/trackpad then get a computer
A touch device with an attachable physical keyboard and stylus (pencil)....

You could type on software keyboard so why did they make a physical one?

You can tap and draw with your finger, why did they make a stylus?

Maybe for greater accuracy and comfort. This is what a mouse can bring and you can still use touch as primary input.

For the first several years, that was mostly true. iPads were intended to be primarily handheld devices, designed for media and web consumption, and maybe some light work at most. They weren’t devices they intended people to situate on their desk like a computer.

Then the iPad Pro came along. They’re big. They highly tout their physical keyboard support. Many people use them on a desk. Apple widely promotes them as a computer replacement. And, as many have said, it’s kind of awkward to constantly move your arm from the keyboard to the touchscreen when using it on a desk. It’s only natural that the deliberate limitations of iOS are being called into question when Apple is selling iPads that are now both very powerful, and very expensive.

It’s kind of a sticking point for a device that can cost as much as $1900 and is claimed to be a potential computer replacement that certain doable things like mouse support or file system access can’t be done because “we just don’t believe in it” or “Steve Jobs once said...”

And as others have said, mouse/trackpad support would not displace touchscreen gestures. For iOS, touchscreen support will always be the priority, that’s easily understood. But many of those gestures could be adapted to the Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad without any fundamental alteration to iOS’s touchscreen layout.

The apple care plus on my iPad Pro expires in July. If they bring mouse support then I will upgrade to the 11 inch 2018 pro.

Yes I know but I want to wait for the Apple care plus to expire before I buy the new iPad Pro. I can get it a month or two before iOS 13 drops.
Would you care if Apple released a new iPad Pro in October? It was released in 2018 in October.

Mind you if the sales discounts are good, then that would justify a purchase even if new ones appeared a few months later. And honestly, I'm not predicting an iPad Pro update in 2019. I'm thinking 2020 instead. That's just a guess though of course.

How credible are the sources as this story is being shared as fact already?

"Speaking on the Connected podcast, MacStorieseditor Federico Viticci revealed an interest in the idea of mouse support, with conversations with others suggesting it could be part of the AssistiveTouch accessibility feature. In researching the possibility, it was found it is possible to have a cursor in iOS when used with the right accessibility hardware, and has been so for years.

According to Viticci's sources, a USB-C mouse could be used in a similar fashion in the future, plugged directly into the iPad Pro's USB-C port without any extra adapters.

A later tweet from developer Steve Troughton-Smith corroborated the rumors, claiming the feature "is indeed in the works.

No matter how much I want to buy in, this is still a rumour if it's only one developer making the claim at this point.

I still find discounted pricing pretty high. Personally, I know I'd regret purchasing the 2018 Pros if Apple revamps storage sizes in the next Pro models at existing price points:

e.g. 11" LTE
64GB -> 128GB ($949)
256GB -> 512GB ($1099)
512GB -> 1TB ($1299)
1TB -> 2TB ($1699)

There's also the fact that performance-wise, even the 2017 iPad Pros are already overkill for my usage.

11" WiFi A14X with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage would be great as an entry level in 2020. It'd be overkill for me right now though.

Steve Troughton-Smith is usually a reliable source. He’s not a random.

I could always make use of the extra RAM. If nothing else, Safari would benefit. 128GB stopped being enough for me back in 2014. I think even the A12X would still be overkill for me by then though, lol. :p
