It is definitely correct on my phone (running iOS 11.2.1). As I wrote, this was only recently fixed since it was not working correctly when I checked a couple of weeks ago.

For example, I have the Edge of Tomorrow, redeemed in 1080P via VUDU. The IOS app says it is 4K DV, but it does not play in 4K on the ATV. My understanding is that movies redeemed through other services not in UHD will not get the free bump to 4K like itunes movies will.

Yes, I'm well aware of this and it is reflected in what I see in the iOS TV app, i.e. titles ported via MA are not flagged as 4K. That includes "Live, Die, Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow" which I also own and redeemed in Vudu.

Again, it only works in the TV app, not in the iTunes store app.

I notice that you are in the UK. Perhaps the backend hasn't been updated in the UK yet? Given that you don't have Movies Anywhere, I imagine there are some differences.

With one I just started redeeming, Kingsman: Golden Circle, it gives me a choice to pick iTunes, google play, VUDU, or moviesanywhere as redemption options. Now in the past before MA existed, I always picked iTunes as it was the best quality in my tests. With the whole 4K hoopla going on now, where is it best to redeem fox movie titles to get the best quality?

I watched this last night in Itunes in 4k HDR on my LG 65OLED B7A and it did not disappoint. The PQ was simply amazing. I have a 300 down Cox line with absolutely no stutter ever. No pixelization, just an amazing perfect picture with great color.
I always try fix titles first in ITunes or purchase them directly in ITunes. My preference.

This is a really safe bet. Personally, I have had good luck with using Movies Anywhere, but itunes is always safe since they do the free UHD upgrade if the title is in their catalog in 4K regardless of the "rights"

But it seems that some studios (e.g. Universal) are moving away from iTunes-redeemeable codes in favor of MA only for new movies, so free upgrades from code redemptions may soon come to an end.

Not all UV codes can be redeemed through MA (primarily those form Paramount and Lionsgate who are not yet participating in MA), and not every MA code is necessarily a UV code. I suspect UV as a redemption platform will die over the next year or so, and the studios will only issue MA codes. Already today many new releases don't carry the UV logo anymore.

From what I'm taking away, there's no reason not to use MA if iTunes is not available.

The only possible reason is if you want UV rights for some reason. If you redeem a movie through MA, you'll have it in Vudu but not in any other connected UV providers. Personally I don't think it matters since Vudu is the only good UV provider left anyway.

At any connected MA providers that carry the UHD version. iTunes already has significantly more than Vudu, and Amazon has some exclusives too.

It probably won’t be 4K, it’s just a generic label of what that movie is available as.
On playback it will more than likely only playback in HD.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, you can check in the iOS TV app. Go to Library/Movies, scroll to find the movie in question, and tap it. It'll show you the resolution (and HDR/DV, if applicable) you can actually play back.

Just went through my entire collection and determined which are available in 4K through iTunes against where the movies were purchased/redeemed and I can confirm anything purchased in HD through Vudu or redeemed in Movies Anywhere does not show up in my TV app library as 4K. Any HD movies that I purchased via iTunes, codes redeemed in iTunes or purchased in Vudu and also purchased in iTunes shows up as 4K. Unfortunately it looks like MA participating studios are going to MA only thereby preventing us from getting the free 4k upgrade on new movies....which is understandable, but still disappointing. Thankfully 4K movies are still getting discounted in iTunes

At some point there will likely be 8k versions of movies and who knows all what else to come down the pike. I can't imagine providers keeping multiple versions of the same movies and taking up all that extra server space forever making things more and more complicated for everyone....including themselves.

Just doesn't seem cost effective. I know the industry has relied on people sometimes buying the same item over and over in different formats, but I just don't see this practical in the digital age as time goes on. Realistically, how many versions will they want to keep on their servers indefinitely?

What I’m currently finding unsettling is how almost daily my “4K/HDR” movies in the TV app is constantly changing. One day it’s 110, then 96. Yesterday it was 102.
