My rig is a MP 1,1 from 2006. I have macos 10.5.8. I have been told that 10.7 is as far as this MP can be upgraded but I haven't upgraded yet to 10.7 as I can't find my disk with lion on it.

I bought 2 inateck kt4004 so that I could have more USB ports. Apparently I don't have the driver and inateck offers no driver. Is there a way to make this work? Is there a generic driver out there possibly? or does anyone have one?

Brand new here but long time MAc user. TIA for any help!!

Info from Inateck website...

"Operating System Compatibility: Mac OS 10.8.2 to Mac OS 10.9.5 - The Expansion card is applicable to the MAC Pro (Early 2008 to 2012 Late Version);
So maybe you're out of luck with your Mac Pro 1,1:(

Buy an ATI Radeon HD 5770 (if necessary) and then upgrade to Lion. Then install a second drive and do the hack to upgrade to 10.11.6 El Capitan on that separate drive.

MacProElCapitan2.jpeg

El Capitan runs beautifully on MacPro1,1 with Radeon 5770 (as well as some other cards), and the OS is much more useful since it has proper browser support, etc.

Once you've upgraded to El Capitan, you can manually install Security Update 2017-005 and then stop there. Don't install 2018-001 or later because that will kill the El Capitan install.

Apparently it works with MacPro1,1 as well if you upgrade to El Capitan.

On eBay, it appears the Radeon HD 5770 for Mac goes for about US$75-100 shipped. However, you'll also need a power cable for it, and those usually go for about $5 to $10. (The cable directly plugs into the MacPro1,1 motherboard.)

I was lucky as I got my Mac Radeon 5770 + cable off Kijiji locally for CAD$60, which is about US$45.

On your current HDD:
- Upgrade to 10.7.5 if you could. Maybe you just need to download the mpk file (from alternative source, perhaps) and run it from within your current OSX version.

- Install a new HDD (there are 6 SATA ports in MP1,1), or any HDD different from the one above.
- Get a pre-built disk image of El Capitan. Link in the Youtube video below
- Restore that disk image to the new HDD
- Now you have 2 OS to run from.
- Remove the HDD with OSX 10.7.5 also. Boot once to the new HDD with El Capitan installed. It will be very laggy for the new OS does not support the old VGA card.
- Now turn-off the MP and remove the original 7300GT that came with your MP.
- Replace it with a cheap 2nd AMD or nVidia VGA card (PC version) you can find nearby. (mine is Radeon HD6670 ~ 15$)
It would work immediately. A little bit scary at first because of the long-waiting blackscreen, but it will eventually get you to the log-in screen, If you can't log-in because of a blurry screen, try switching the monitor to another port on the VGA card.

Very few VGA card on the market now can get you the pre-boot configuration support screen (boot screen in short), because MP1,1 is running the obsolete 32bit EFI.
Go for a cheap PC VGA card. Use the original 7300GT when you want to get the boot screen (not very often)

After settling down with El Capitan and the new VGA card, you can install the PCIe to USB 3.0 card.

That's why I recommended the Radeon HD 5770 for Mac. There are lots of them available for not too much money, and it works natively, including for both 10.7 Lion and for 10.11 El Capitan, with full boot screen support. I boot back and forth and into Bootcamp Windows 10 too at will any time I want just by holding down the OPTION key. No having to manually set the startup disc, and no need to swap GPUs when booting into 10.7. Also, you can use the Radeon 5770 with refit too if you're do the SMC firmware upgrade to MacPro2,1.

The Mac Radeon 5770 design also fits the MacPro1,1 chassis perfectly, as it has a "tail" that fits into the plastic airflow bracket inside the Mac Pro case. Furthermore, its power utilization is relatively low, low enough to work with a single 6-pin power cable.

@EugW: Thanks for the info.
The HD5770 for Mac is more pricey than a GTX680 for PC where I live (HCMC), and my MP is just a for-fun project, so I try to keep the budget low.
It will be depending on what VGA card at what price OP can buy, but in principle, all nVidia VGA cards up to GTX980 and all AMD cards up to Radeon R9 280x would work.

The PC GTX680 is actually often more expensive than the Mac Radeon 5770 on eBay. I guess it depends if those eBay sellers ship to Vietnam, and what they charge for the shipping.

The GTX680 is much faster than the Radeon 5770, but unless you have a use for that extra speed (eg. gaming), it doesn't really make much difference since for OS navigation both cards are fast. So, with the GTX680 you gain speed for higher cost (in some countries anyway), but at the expense of convenience (no 10.7 Lion compatibility and no boot screen support) as well as higher power utilization and heat generation.

BTW, your GTX680 supports Metal in Mojave, so that's another advantage. However, MacPro1,1 can't do Mojave anyway, so it's moot unless you transfer the card to a different Mac Pro.

- GTX680 for PC : 35$~70$ (I got one of these at 35$)
- GTX 680 for Mac (EVGA brand): 75$ (these were sold-out like hotcakes once on sales)
- GTX960 for PC : 60~75$
- GTX750 for PC : ~35$
- Radeon R9 280x : 35~40$
- HD6670: 15~20$ (I already have one which I bought a couple of years ago)

EugW, is it obvious which cable to buy to power the HD5770? is it also obvious where on the motherboard I should plug it in?

Which GPU do you have right now?

Depending on the seller, they may or may not provide the cable with it. If not, you can get it on Amazon. (Which country are you in?)

Instructions here (for the 2008 but it is the same for the 2006):

RH6LZDVqt6Kau2m5.large.jpeg

There are two connectors on the motherboard for this, just to the left of the WiFi module. It's a 6-pin to 6-pin cable for the 5770, meaning you can install two 5770 video cards if you wish. If you get a higher power GPU, then you will need a dual 6-pin to 8-pin cable because you will need the power from both ports to power the higher power GPU.

P.S. I don't think the 5770 works properly with 10.5. However, it apparently works fine in 10.6.8. I use it in 10.7 and 10.11 (and Windows 10). As you know, 10.7 is the latest officially supported OS for that machine, but 10.11 works fine too. @Nguyen Duc Hieu already provided the video describing how you can install 10.11. You will need a minimum of 2 GB RAM to run 10.11, but it is painfully slow with 2 GB. 4 GB is the real minimum, with 8+ GB recommended.

Have you considered flashing your GTX 680 (if it's compatible that is)? Then you'll get boot screen support.

I should also mention that some of the higher power GPU cards actually have two 6-pin ports actually.

I did flash the card using the guideline and GPU ROM in this video, however, still no boot-screen on my cMP1,1 (already flashed to 2,1).

@jonmac131313:
If you intent to buy from eBay, just use this keyword to search: "mini 6-pin to 8-pin cable". Buy 2 of them, you can cut-out the 2 pins you don't use with a strong knife, if they are not removable by hand. I include a link below, one of the cheapest offers I found on eBay. My GTX680 new 6pin + 8pin cables, and runs well with power from the 2 mini 6pin on the motherboard, but I haven't run any stress test yet. Just normal use.

Okay, I have been busy gathering stuff:
El Capitan - got it
Radeon 5770 on its way. $39.99 ebay
Power cord for 5770 on its way - $2.78
new HDs, but I have a question, maybe problem with them

El Capitan from mega, is there a lion on mega? since I paid for the mega account, if I could just find it there...

I bought three new drives for this rig:
- 1tb ssd which I was hoping to be the El Capitan system volume
- 2- 2tb Seagate drives which I wanted for files, time machine

the 1tb ssd will not show hp at all in system profiler.
the 2 2 tb drives also do not show up in any form. When I plugged them in I could feel the drive spinning up. Do all of the relevant pins correspond to the receiving jacks inside the case?

sorry if this is a dumb question. I have to get these drives working to complete this.

No the SSD and the two 2tb Seagate drives do not show up in diskutility. They don't show up in system profiler and they do not mount like yours are. They are fresh out of the box new, not initialized yet. I just got them for this MP. This MP is very clean and seems to be working great otherwise. I am still on 10.5.8. I am looking for Lion.

The Seagates have that little four pin connector next to but separate from the big flat sata pins thing. if you look at the pics again there is nothing corresponding to this four pin jack on the inside of the case. Is that four pin jack for the power? or is it optional? as I did feel the drive spinning up I presume it is getting power. The SSD does not have that four pin jack.

This Mac pro is brand new to me. I have always in the past taken drives in and out of my macs without issues. Any ideas???

I have no problem with my SSDs and hard drives. Do you see them in disk utility? Are they initialized?

I have much smaller drives in my system though, so just to be sure I just tested a 2 TB Seagate hard drive and it was seen fine too (El Capitan).

This is in a Mac Pro 2,1 eight-core I just got for cheap from someone who picked it out of the garbage.

Strange. I wonder if the drives will show up if you initialize them on another machine. Or perhaps upgrading to 10.6 or 10.7 would help, although I was under the impression that 10.5.8 was fine for this.

The extra four pins (or more pins on other drives) are for jumpers. If you run into an incompatibility, you can jumper the drive to slow it down to SATA I for example. I personally haven't had to use jumpers though.

Okay , please don't laugh but all three of the drives work fine and are now initialized. Feeling pretty stupid: I thought the drives were hot swap-able, meaning I could just throw them in and they would show up. So, yes, I shutdown, swapped drives around and lo! there they were, and they are now formatted and in service.

I also found a laptop drive from a MBP that has Lion installed on it. I plugged it in to see what was on it and it booted up from that drive into Lion.

Do I need to be running Lion to do this upcoming El Capitan installation? this all started because of those inateck usb cards. It looks as though I can boot into this old laptop drive with Lion on it.

You're the second person in a week here that thought the drives in these Mac Pros were hot swappable.

?

Did you get the El Capitan ISO that @Nguyen Duc Hieu linked? If so, all you have to do is copy/restore that ISO to the drive directly. No other actual install process involved.

BTW, once you get El Capitan copied over, DO NOT INSTALL Security Update 2018-xxx. I believe the last one that works with your Mac Pro is 2017-005, which you can download separately direct from Apple.

However, you can't boot El Capitan anyway, since you don't have the right GPU yet. Lucky you got a Mac Radeon 5770 for just $40. Most of the time it's more expensive than that on eBay. You did get a Mac one right?

So, I need to wait on using El Capitan until I get the Radeon 5770?
You can't boot into El Capitan unless you have the proper card. I don't know which GPU you have though, since unless I missed it, you never answered our question about that. If it's the 7300 GT or Quadro FX 4500 then it won't work.

I did not check to see if it was Mac. can you tell from this? https://www.ebay.com/itm/324245763339
Sorry man, that is not a Mac card, and it won't work. You might be able to flash it to Mac to make it work though.

Yes, I have the original 7300 GT. 32g of Ram. and now a bunch of drives.

Flashing the video card to Mac - will that work? I'll try. it but if it's going to ruin the card maybe I should try to just send it back.

How would I flash the card to Mac? Do you know if it will fully work after the flash? or will it never be quite as good/compatible/fully featured as the Mac version?

I saw it and it had two DVI ports and an HDMI which I thought was a boon plus the price was right. The ones labeled as Mac mostly have only one dvi port and two small ports (don't know what they are called.)

The two little ports are mini-displayport and they are better than the HDMI ports because the mini-displayport supports full 2560x1440 resolution. So, with one Mac Radeon 5770 you can have three 1440p monitors running simultaneously if you're so inclined.

I have not done the flash, but I believe you need a PC to do it.

In the meantime, I’ve gotten my 10 year-old USB 3.0 card up and running in El Capitan.

It needed a third party driver though. I posted about it in the Mac Pro USB 3.x thread.
