I would like to correct a little bit (about VGA card)

1. 7300GT will get you to the desktop screen in El Capitan. Boot screen also works. Browsing website with only still images and text works, too. MS Office works beautifully. But anything with flash and/or video will be painfully slow.

2. AMD cards older than R9 280x (including R9 280x) will work out of the box to El Capitan. No boot screen, first-time boot-in with the new card will take longer than normal (driver matching, I guess). My Radeon HD 6670 2GB (a PC card) worked out of the box, both in OSX 10.7.5 and OSX 10.11.6.

3. nVidia cards: common cards like GTX750, GTX 680 will be recognized work just fine. No booth screen. GTX 960, 970, 980 will need nVidia web driver installed beforehand. You will need to power them properly, though.

4. Don't bother with flashing. MP 1,1/2,1 is running EFI 32bit, while most of the PC cards are 64bit (except for the HD5770 Mac Edition and/or HD5770 flashed). Just swap it with the original 7300GT and boot to El Capitan. When you need to get to the boot screen, simply put the 7300GT back to its slot. Store the 7300GT away and check its working condition frequently, to be sure it will work when you need it. Most of the time you won't need the boot screen anyway.
I did flash my Gigabyte GTX 680 2GB OC properly, but couldn't get the boot screen anyhow on my MP1,1.

According to this page, the PC 5770 doesn’t work at all unless flashed.

Can’t hurt to give it a try though.

Wow! That is awesome!! Where can I learn about these things? I've been away from computers for a number of years and things have changed, there's much I don't know and never knew in the first place about osx at the deeper level. How did you know to extract the kext using pacifist and what is clover? what is pacifist?

In the meantime, I’ve gotten my 10 year-old USB 3.0 card up and running in El Capitan.

It needed a third party driver though. I posted about it in the Mac Pro USB 3.x thread.

Google and YouTube are my teachers these days. During Covid I learned how to re-roof my shed. ? Previously the roofers either wanted a ridiculous amount of money to re-roof my shed or else weren't interested at all in such a small project, so I just let it rot. Then Covid happened and I had a lot of free time, so I reroofed it myself from what I learned online and at the roofing store, for 1/4 of the price of what the contractors wanted. :) However, it took me a LONG time.

Anyhow, I re-tested my USB 3 card with a different drive, a Samsung T5 bus-powered SSD, and got somewhat faster speeds, although nowhere near the maximum for that drive.

DiskSpeedTest-SamsungT5.png

Also, speeds dropped to about 80 MB/s when I tried transferring my El Capitan install dmg from my Samsung 850 EVO to my Samsung T5, both attached to the same USB 3 card on separate ports so it appears their bandwidth is shared like the KT4004.

I'm told that these speeds are in the ballpark of what is to be expected with our MacPro1,1 and MacPro2,1 machines, since these are PCIe 1X cards and we have PCIe version 1.0, which is the slowest. Nonetheless I'm pleased, since it's still way, way better than USB 2.

So if on MacPro1,1/2,1 this is all the speed we'll get, then the one thing I'm interested in with your results is whether or not your USB 3 devices get disconnected when the Mac Pro sleeps. They get disconnected with mine. It seems to be hit and miss with the KT4004, so it may depend upon the model of the Mac Pro if true.

As for Clover, it's a boot loader primarily aimed at Hackitoshers. People add various kernel extensions through Clover to get the non-Apple hardware on their hackintoshes to work in OS X. A group of people (including a peripherals manufacturer) had written a driver to add NEC/Renesas USB support to OS X, but for some reason they only packaged it to work with Clover. Luckily the GitHub info page on this was clear and stated all the package did was install the kext file in the appropriate Clover directory. Pacifist has been around a long time for extracting files from installer packages, so that's what I did. I extracted the kext and installed it manually under /Library/Extensions and it works fine. Yay! :D This is unnecessary for your KT4004 though, since it uses a different chipset and the drivers are native to OS X.

Fantastic! well done and also kudos to you on your shed roof! I've worked on houses for decades so I usually am the person who gives advice on those topics. But getting under the covers of osx and these pesky hardware issues I am lesser equipped to deal with.

Well, as soon as I can get a Mac radeon 5770 video card I will be able to do those speed tests on the USB cards. It is looking to be at least $95 USD with shipping.

Well just to let you know, I found a USA seller on ebay with a Mac Radeon 5770 for $65, $74.90 with shipping, which should get here in about a week's time. I had ordered a 6 to 6 pin cable for the 5770 but I just noticed that it was from China and is not expected here until late September up to November(if at all!)!! I ain't got time for that! So I found a USA seller on ebay who has them for $5.95 free ship which will be here in about a week. I guess the $2.77 to China I'll not see again!?

Yes, I've given up on eBay items from China, unless it's something I don't care about much and can wait several months. I have been checking a shipping thread about international orders to Canada, and the ship time ranges from about 2 weeks to 5 months. Yes, 5 months.

OTOH, I did order some MacPro2,1 CPUs from Israel though. They're on target to arrive in 3 calendar weeks, so in a couple of days. I ordered Xeon E5345 2.33 GHz quad-core chips to make my old MacPro1,1 an 8-core machine. In retrospect though, I should have just ordered the X5355 2.66 GHz quad-core chips from Canada as I would have gotten them two weeks ago. They run hotter, but after experiencing the even hotter X5365 3 GHz quad-core chips in my new old MacPro2,1 which was retrieved from someone's garbage, I can safely say that these machines' cooling systems are adequately built to handle these chips. If you ever decide to upgrade to 8-core, I would suggest getting the X5355 SLAEG chips, as they are relatively widely available in the US, for not very much money. The X5365 is about 5X the cost despite having only an incremental performance advantage.

Anyhow, as @Nguyen Duc Hieu said, you should be able to boot into El Capitan with your 7300 GT in the interim just for testing purposes. It's not properly supported in El Capitan, but you can still use it to check your KT4004. I partially resurrected a dead Quadro FX 4500, which also doesn't properly support any version of OS X past 10.7, but it does boot into 10.11 El Capitan. I could navigate around the OS and check the System Information, etc. Video playback was horrible though.

Not a bad deal on the Mac Radeon 5770 BTW.

Well I am so pleased I can hardly stand it. The Radeo 5770(s - the pc and the mac ones) both arrived today! AND it came with a power cord! so if anyone ever needs one I will have one, maybe two (if China comes through) extra ones.

So it is going through the set-up migration from the old drives routine now which it says will take 2 hours more, but it looks like im on my way!

How did you do the usb3 speedtest? if these kt4004 cards work maybe I can test that later although all of my external hdds are **I think** only usb2 so maybe I won't get any real speed?

You've opened a whole new line of questions about upgrading CPUs!Will this enable us to upgrade beyond El Capitan?

Use Black Magic Disk Speed Test for benchmarking. You can choose which drive to test in the application settings.

For external drives I have a USB 3 Samsung T5 SSD and also have a USB 3 SATA dock that I can use for SATA SSDs and regular SATA hard drives.

If you haven’t used one, those docks are very convenient and only cost about US$20.

You cannot upgrade past El Capitan unless you have MacPro3,1 or later.

Okay, well, after using this thing for a few days I am really happy with the way it all worked out! I can't thank you all enough!

EugW, this MP did not have bluetooth so I bought a little usb plug bluetooth adapter and I cannot get Airdrop to work. After doing a little research, it appears that in order to get Airdrop to work this MP must have a bluetooth adapter that is "Handoff" capable. Do you have any knowledge of this? I know there is the remaining loose wire for the bluetooth on the motherboard which I saw when installing a wifi adapter. Do I need to get a bluetooth adapter that goes internally on the motherboard or can I get away with a usb one? How do you choose the right usb bluetooth adapter that will work?
bluetooth config.jpg

I will get something usb 3 external so I can test how the inateck kt 4004 performs - I have two of them installed in this MP now. Most of my stuff is pretty old. It was all working well and I was not needing to upgrade or add anything for my purposes until recently, which brought me here. So, I'll have to up my game on the external drives too I guess.

I'm not sure, cuz I don't have Handoff/Airdrop on mine. My Bluetooth module was very cheap on eBay and is only Bluetooth 2.0, and my WiFi is only 802.11n. You have Bluetooth 4.0 which I understand is what you need (although I don't know if USB is enough), but this site states you need 802.11ac as well.

The popular upgrade is the combo 802.11ac/Bluetooth 4.0 internal card with BCM94360CD. It doesn't actually fit the Mac Pro 1,1, but you can also get an adapter to get it to fit. That will provide both 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0, using the 4 internal antennae.

OSXwifi sells them for about $135 US, but if you buy off eBay it costs less than half that. The problem is that on eBay, most of the cheap sellers don't specifically say it works it on Mac Pro 1,1/2,1 so there is a risk you'll buy the wrong one if you don't know what to buy.

However, even then, some people report issues with Airdrop not working consistently. The other problem is that I don't think the module is supported in Lion 10.7. So, I decided not to bother for now. However, if I ever get a Mac Pro 5,1, then I'll get the BCM95360CD upgrade, since my current WiFi module is not supported in Catalina.

Thank you for all that info, EugW. While my cheapo bluetooth usb plugin module may say bluetooth 4, it appears that a few features are not present including the Handoff capability which I read somewhere online is a must for the hardware to support airdrop. Interestingly, my wifi card I bought is not 802.11ac, it is 802.11 a/b/g/n, but it also states in the system report that it supports Airdrop. Is Airdrop a protocol that runs over bluetooth? or wifi? or both? Anyway, it looks like I can't use it. Hate to say it but I wish it were as easy to move files from my iPhone to my Mac Pro as it is to move files from my iPhone to my Windows 10 device.

In my System Information, it says my Airport Extreme 802.11n card is supported for AirDrop too. Nonetheless, it doesn't actually work. Even if it can find the device, any file transfers always fail.

Plus I think there are different requirements for Mac to Mac AirDrop vs Mac to iPhone AirDrop.

For me I don't care that much though, since this is not my main machine.

I ordered a KT4006 to try it out, as I like the idea of not having to draw extra power from a SATA drive bay and thus preventing use of that drive bay with an actual drive.

My understanding is the KT4006 is the same as your KT4004, but with only 2 rear USB 3.0 ports, and with a connector for 2 internal USB 3.0 ports too for PCs. It also comes with a low profile bracket, which I would need for my Windows desktop. It's also slightly cheaper than the KT4004.

Hey, here's a question: I went to my sit down at my MP and it is lying on its side with the door open - - I have a couple of small laptop harddrives plugged in and they are just kind of standing there on the sata jack. It has been on since yesterday.

I noticed that the red led's on the memory boards were both lit up and a brighter red led on the motherboard, near the memory boards was also lit.

I could not detect that anything was wrong from using the machine and tried to find some indication, but it was using very little of the 32gb of memory and the cpu was very quiet, under 1 or 2 % I think. So, I shut it down and the led on the motherboard was still lighted.

I pulled the power cord out of the back and the led went out.

I plugged it back in, no led on, and booted up and everything is normal.

Is there some kind of an event viewer that will tell me what was going on? The diagnostic tab on the system report said only everything okay.

1. Are your memory LEDs no longer lit?

2. There is a bank of LEDs on the motherboard, not just one IIRC. I can't say I know how to interpret them, but it's in the service manual.

3. You need to get proper 2.5" to 3.5" adapter brackets. This is not the cheapest, but is my favourite, and is still only US$10.

Many of the cheaper ones are quite flimsy, and some of them don't have the proper mounting holes for the Mac Pro sleds. This Sabrent one is very robust and has all the proper mounting holes.

The leds all were off after I re-booted. All is normal now. Isn't there any kind of event viewer/log of system events/problems?

So, I know, I know... I do have one adapter for the 2.5" drive:
IMG_1391.jpg

It was around $15 but nice solid metal, all the holes line up just right. I like it so much, I ordered three more, they'll be here in a day or two. I couldn't wait for the adapters to get here, so I just plugged the drives in without a proper support just so I could see what was on them. But that was the reason I had the case lying on its side with the door open. Otherwise, I wouldn't have noticed the led's being on.

That looks like the exact same metal bracket as the US$10 all-metal Sabrent I linked above, but with different branding. It's possible the connector board might be slightly different, but it's effectively just an extender so there's not much to change anyway.

I'm glad I tried the KT4006. It is MUCH faster on my MacPro2,1 than my D-Link DUB-1310 with that third-party kext. Using my 1 TB Samsung TB to test, the speeds went up 30% for read, and 55% for write. I am very pleased.

KT4006-SamsungT5.png

The bad news is that just like my DUB-1310, the KT4006 also kicks off the drives at sleep. The good news is that the KT4006 is much faster to remount.

Somebody in the other thread mentioned the app Amphetamine to keep the Mac awake as needed, so that can be used as a workaround for the dismount on sleep issue.

At the moment I have a seagate external drive plugged into the KT4004 and when I wake the MP up from sleep the drive is always still connected, is mounted, still appears in the list of drives on the right hand of the finder windows. Is yours dismounted and you have to mount it again? is that what happens?

No it remounts immediately at wake but I get a notification (in El Capitan 10.11) that the drive was incorrectly ejected.
