So I just checked out the new Surface Laptop 5 which I was waiting and waiting to get. I was following multiple rumors and now with the release I am so disappointed.
The better configuration comes with an Intel 1255u, even the 15" has a 1255u! Same size battery in both models. No 120hz screen. No redesign of the screen. No new screen. No AR coating. You get a thunderbolt port and 12th Gen and wifi ax. The 13.5" with 512gb ssd and 16gb ram with 1255u is $1699 which is the same price as the M2 MBA with similar specs.
Now the Surface does have a touchscreen on a non tablet laptop and gorilla glass 5 on screen and 3 on TouchPad. But it is nowhere near as nice as the M2 MBA and I actually think the MacBook is a better value.
Microsoft laptops have never been cheap and they will be discounted in time but if they just would have changed a few things they could have been seriously competitive.
I have a Lenovo 7i which retails for $1200 and I got it on sale for way less. It has the same specs as the $1699 model with a 2 in one design, many more ports, a quad speaker system and they have a 16" model with a 1260p with sane 2k touchscreen for the same $1200. The screen has minimal bezels, a 1080p Webcam vs 720p in the surface.
I love Surface devices, the clean build of windows, great design although the 5 is an old design and whoever is in charge of things at MS product design really needs to get their head in the game. Just slim the screen bezels and add more screen, add another thunderbolt port and SD card slot, 120hz screen, larger battery, maybe a better color than sage green, make windows professional the default OS again, and maybe get Intel to put in the next Gen processor in your devices before anyone else. Lower the prices a bit and they would be cutting edge but instead it is just a rebranded laptop 4 with a couple minor changes.
The Surface Pro 9 is the only one to get but I don't like tablet PC's.
