Is it a giant iPod touch? Yes. 150% so.

Is that a bad thing? Well, if you're still happy with your 15" iMac from 2002, and don't see the need to upgrade to a 27" iMac from 2009 because the 27" iMac is just a bigger, faster 15" iMac, then the iPad isn't for you. If you recognize the HUGE difference in what you can DO with a 9.7" screen over a 3.5" screen, then maybe you "need" one...

Excellent analogy!

Safari is indeed the worst thing ever in iPad. I have experienced numerous crashes due to possible out of memory. Not to mention younhave to forget about opening many tabs. Because basically all the tabs will have to reload every time you go back. What? Is this the way to help AT&T to drive bandwidth usage beyond 250MB??

great review. the op confirmed what i had thought about the weight and fatigue of holding it and the e-reading part. surprised to see that pages load slowly and all the things that make browsing the internet NOT the best experience, but a different experience....

....2.0 should be the one to buy

Thank you all for your input. I think I will look into a Kindle or a Nook. Maybe a sony since all I want to do is read it on a plane.

sony does have cover with an attached light to it. Problem solved there.
ipad can wait for now.

How many tabs you have open??? Because iPhone OS doesn't allow background Apps except Apple's core apps. Don't understand how iPod, Safari, Mail would use up all 256MB of RAM

I guess its rev 2 for me then...or maybe even rev 3. At least i can save the money for iPhone 4.0.

This is the best review i have read so far.

Reloading in Safari every time you move from one page to another is the most annoying thing in the iphone and i'm now seriously thinking twice whether or not to get an iPad.

Well lets be fair. It's not every time you switch page. Just expect that if you have a few tabs open and switch application, coming back to Safari will likely result in tabs reloading themselves. It's definitely an issue that hopefully Apple will resolve.

But thank you all for the kind words about the review. I tried to touch on things that other reviews hadn't mentioned.

I'll assume sarcasm and reply in kind. Am I not supposed to? Should I go see the doctor? Is there something wrong with me?

No sarcasm. You aren't supposed to hold it out in front of you like you're holding out a rifle at Marine Corps boot camp. It's supposed to rest on your lap or something, ya know? I'm 40 and I can handle it.

Well, the iPad ads are showing me that I'm supposed to hold it out like a portrait device, in one hand!

yeah, but not for so long that your arms go numb. You don't hold a framed picture like that do you?

Good grief. It's not a framed picture. It's an iPad. And basically, you're saying only use it when you're sitting down? Crazy talk, yo! :p

New MBP and iPhone 4.0 for me.

$500 is a lot of money for me when I really do need a new phone and laptop.

"Nobody needs one" ?

Correct, I agree. But do we need NEED iPhones? Before them, we survived right? The iPad (IMO) is a niche COOL little toy that will definitely benefit people and their businesses.

It's like twitter... do we need it? no, but when used correctly for business, networking and such, it's a gem!

I'm a filmmaker, and ALREADY reeked the benefits of having an iPad. At Easter dinner, my iPad was passed around the dinner table showing some family my most recent work. It felt like we're getting closer to minority report by being able to just HAND OVER a delicious looking display with gorgeous looking video. Do I need one? No... however FOR ME, this is an invaluable tool for wowing people on the fly. I <3 it.
