The problem with iOS widgets is not the location.

The location is actually very good. The linear presentation makes for a continuous feed that is accessible from anywhere, even the lock screen. For news junkies like myself this is pretty powerful.

The only actual problem I have with iOS widgets is...the lack of iOS widgets. Support is so limited that it's hardly worth mentioning as a feature.

This is going to take 6 months to a year to get sorted to where widgets start their showing potential in iOS.

They rushed iOS 8 by far because of the huge # of bugs and the lack of development into their features. Apple is known to do that lately.

the other good news is by the end of that fourth year, your phone will likely have all the features of a 2013 Android phone too ;)

Right and in 2018 your android phone will be running 2014 software. # in all seriousness none of those features appeal to me. I have a suite of business apps on my iPhone that are infinitely more useful than volume reduction via the calendar for example. Apps not on android yet.

What is important to you is not to me and conversely I'm sure.

Nope, because I don't keep a cell phone more than 2-3yrs so OS updates that far out don't mean anything to me. Nothing would annoy me more than to have 3yr old phone that is slow when compared to the new ones out.

Yep, a slow phone would annoy me also. Good you don't keep phones a long time. Still three years, IOS 11.

The big difference is that my 5s will probably be supported for four more years with IOS updates. I'd rather have those updates than everything mentioned in the above post. The "supposed" smarter phone features are meh to me.

The odds of any android phone getting two major releases is pretty slim, and if it does happen the amount of time between updates is pretty ridiculous.

Even Nexus 4 owners have no idea when they are getting Lollipop, while iPhone 4S owners are getting 8.1 the same day as iPhone 6 owners and that phone from 3 years ago.

For long term phone owners, Apple is a more sensible bet because the support is just flat out stronger.

For frequent upgraders, this is less of an issue/concern.

Frankly not getting updates on android is not such a big deal. Since most apps have been delinked from the core os, end users barely see any difference or be disadvantaged not having the latest android version.

My little nephew is using my old S2 and I can't pinpoint with certainty what I can do on my note4 that can't be done on s2 (except Google now which is not that useful if you are not in the US or hardware related stuff)

Sure that's one way to look at it. If your favorite navigation app runs on all devices why not.

The other way to view it is when core o/s services are updated an ecosystem can be built allowing many apps to sit on top of new functionality.

Riiiight.

So I can count you in for getting a Gingerbread phone soon. No big deal according to you, right?

Would it kill you if you got gb phone with qhd display, multi window etc etc? A lot of the stuff on Samsung galaxy phones are not in vanilla aosp android isn't it?

On the other hand would you get a note 4 without Spen, multi window, fast charging, qhd amoled etc but running on the latest vanilla android. I don't think I would.

The point both he and I (and Oxford ;)) are making is that it's not the location that determines whether or not they are 'widgets' but rather what they do. The widgets in iOS serve the exact same purpose as the home screen versions on Android, just from a different location.

I disagree......they do not do the same thing as widgets on Android. Not even close.....
Apple wanted to be able to say they have widgets in IOS8 but they are really just notifications. I get the same info from swiping down too.....and from within any app.....

This is not the same....

nEt7VUql.png

As this....not even close to having the same functionality. No matter how you spin it........From my home screen....no swiping down needed.
Plus i have a voice activated search and digital assistant bundled within the Google Search widget. All i have to say is "Ok Google"

But if I do swipe down.....i get almost the same this as the so called IOS widgets.....

There are no iOS8 widgets in that pic. It's just today view.

You can say those aren't widgets, but notifications. You'd be wrong though.

And remember that Siri can be accessed from Anywhere, even the lock screen.

And I prefer the usability of control center's music controls over GPM's widget.

No, then my home screen would be as hideous as yours ;)

Then there is the issue of redundancy. You have a home screen music widget that controls one music player.

Control center controls all music players and doesn't clutter my home screen. I use 3 music players are 2 news radio players. Control center handles it all. Same can't be said for your setup.

Don't need a home screen search widget when I have Siri. On my S5 there is long press on home for Google Now.

When I want weather I have Siri, or Today View, or a weather widget.

So where are you allegedly better off?

Personally, I tend to go with the minimal approach. I want nothing on my true home screen. All my widgets are on other screens.

Come on jamezr, I know you're smarter than this. Where to start...

You include an image of only the very top of the Today today, showing the stock widgets included on iOS--very enlightening. Haven't figured out how to add new ones yet? Here, I'll include a few photos that actually contain pertinent, useful examples of widgets on iOS. Since you seem to be having such a hard time with this, I'll walk you though exactly what you're seeing:

- Launcher--a widget that allows me to use shortcuts to specific functions or apps. And before you get your panties further into a twist, I'm not comparing functionality (I know the same thing can be done in Android), only the fact that these are widgets. Right below that...

- A Reminders widget. Allows me to take actions or touch it to go direction into the app. Next...

- The TeeVee widget. This comes with the TeeVee app--keeps me posted to next occurrences of any show's I've selected to follow. Follow that widget...

- The Yahoo! Sports widget. Again, a customizable snapshot giving me scores for teams I follow. And as with a widget on your home screen, allows me to get directly to the app if I choose. Next...

- PCalc Lite widget. As previously describes, I can use this calculator right here without having to enter the app. After PCalc...

- The Evernote widget, looking and offering functionality identical to its Android counterpart. How can that be? According to jamezr, it's not really a widget... And below the Evernote widget...

- The Yahoo! Weather widget, doing exactly what it would be doing on an Android home screen.

And these are only the ones I added early on after iOS 8 was released. A quick check now shows me another 15 available on my device, just from my existing apps--haven't gone out and searched for anything new yet. It's clearly too early to compare available content.

None of these are 'just notifications' as you love to repeat over, and over, and over. If that was the case, you have a bunch of notifications on your home screen.

And good job, you found a widget on Android, the platform that's has had widgets available for years, that doesn't have an iOS counterpart, the platform that's had them available for weeks--way to go. And the Google Now search widget at that--the flagship widget for the platform. That would be like me touting a Siri widget (yes, I realize it doesn't exist) that wasn't available on Android. Great example. ;)

Jamezr, do you only use your smartphone's single home screen? You keep touting how you don't have to 'swipe down' to see your widgets. I really hope you can understand that unless that's the ONLY screen you use, that's not an advantage. How do you see your widgets if you're typing an email? Or browsing the web? Do they just magically appear before your eyes? Answer that question, please, so I will at least know you read my post.

Finally, what do you think you're showing me on your notification panel, other than notifications? If you think what you've got there equates to what I showed you on my Today panel, then I guess that explains everything.

We're going to just have to agree to disagree at this point. Enjoy your widgets.

The screen you posted were on a iPad......do they work the same on the IP6?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.........
To get weather...its on my screen...right where i am most of the time.
The Google search widget is what activates Google....i just say the phrase "Ok Google" its easier.....I don't need to touch anything.

Listen, this is all really about preferences. Don't like how iOS has implemented widgets is fine but dismissing widgets on iOS just because they aren't in the same place as one prefers on Android is simply inaccurate. They serve the exact same purpose on both platforms, just go about it differently.

Android & iOS Guy Here: ^^ the above is well stated. Not sure I see why there's a debate

Apple did a good job implementing widgets the way they did. very simliar to Android. Haven't updated my iPad Air to iOS 8 yet but will do a comparison of them once I do.

I've tried two times (iPhone 5s and iPhone 6) and I can only tolerate the experience for about 2 weeks. On the very first day you're like; "Wow", what a beautiful device and you can't put it down. On day 3 you're like; lets see what this thing can do. On day 7 you're like; nothing special. On day 10 you're like; this is it! And on day 12 you're looking to return it and you can't stop thinking about getting a Android device.

Happened to me 2 times. I'm just not programmed to own a iPhone or use iOS. But I would buy my wife another iPhone in a heartbeat. Her iPhone 5 is still going strong and I will probably get her a iPhone 6 for her birthday. She just does not use her phone hardcore like I do. She just wants a fancy camera.

I can relate to what you say. Except I played around with the m8 and s5 in the VZW store. After about 1/2 hour I was happy my go to fallback o/s was IOS. I'm a hardcore user but I rezerve my tweaking to windows.

That's what we were trying to tell you man! They ARE widgets, just not on your homsecreens but I would argue having the widgets in the Today view is more convenient since you have access to your widgets from ANYWHERE.

Also this worries me, if you thought the only widgets in iOS was the Today view I wonder how many fandroids don't understand how widgets on iOS truly function.

That's fine, whatever, you can prefer Android widgets no one is stopping you.

But my problem was saying iOS doesn't have actual widgets, which you have found out to be not true;):D
