Mine did that. I rang up AppleCare and basically said "If you dont replace this my house might burn down". They send me a new one, and I taped around the connector to make it stronger with electricians tape.

EDIT: Like this (sorry for the crappy picture:

I did the same only with white "Duck" brand tape. Held up very well. Did it as a precaution, it wasn't coming apart.

I do not see the trouble in writing steve jobs in the case of faulty power adapters that almost Burn down ones house. If apple does not fix these power adapters, it could turn into a serious legal problem for them.

In other news, i received the new adapter from apple in the mail, and noticed that the guard next to the magnetic plug that extends onto the cord, is acctually about 3mm longer. This makes me feel as though apple had already been aware of the power cords doing this, and fixed it, but felt that they diddnt want to waste the money to recall.

Could you take a pic to show us so we know what a "good" one looks like?

How far ahead of time do Apple stores stock up? I mean, how many weeks or months old does their stock tend to be at any one time? Or is there any standard for that at all?
Depends on the product. However, Apple is usually highly regarded by business analysts how quickly it turns over its inventories.

Apple introduced the newer magsafe about six months ago, so I think you'll be safe.... I know I was ;)

Called Apple yesterday on this

Apparently I also have one of the old shorter shielded ones - I explained that I noticed the other day that I could see some wire insulation at the joint between the wire and the sleeve. The tech immediately said, no problem we'll get you a new one out ASAP.

I guess they do know about this happening.
My MBP sits on my desk and rarely moves - I've had it for 3 months so I am guessing it doesnt take much AT ALL to get these to an unsafe condition...

I have a two month old MB, and have also noticed the sheath around the cord (where it attaches to the magsafe) is longer and slightly different than the one in the pics here. Hopefully, I won't run into any problems. I already make a point of never leaving it plugged in when I'm asleep or out.

I can't help but wonder about two points in question here:

1. One of the selling points of the MB, is that the magsafe will pull out of the computer if enough stress is placed upon the cord. So in theory, the cord should be able to handle a few tough tugs now and again. If this frayed cord/adapter is actually caused by stress on the cord/adapter, then the whole magsafe spiel is a crock of shiitt.

2. OP, why would you place your MB (when using it) on a neoprene sleeve? In my opinion, this is very careless. I mean, how can not realize that the MB is going to become unnecessarily hot like this during use? If using it on your lap, why not place it on a large book, or tray?

Laying it on the top of the case was just the easy thing to do. The vents in the back still have room to vent, so i don't see it being that much of a problem.

I talked with an apple exec. and whatnot (from the email to steve jobs), they seemed very concerned and were very helpful. They asked me a bunch of questions and looked at the pictures. They informed engineers and whatnot also. For all my time they gave me a $30 off 100 or more coupon.

ok, now I am scared!

Usually, I leave my computer on all the time.

I have replaced my power adaptor once. The first one stopped working (replaced under warranty.)

One more thing... to worry about.

Alright, when I go to buy a Blackbook today, I'm going to demand to open the box and check the MagSafe before purchasing.

Then I'm going to handle the thing like it's baby Jesus himself.

And then purchase a third-party MagSafe if one ever comes out (is there one?)

Great. :(

Ummm all new machines come with the new MagSafe. There is no point in opening the box because it will be the new one.

Ummm just if anyone would like to know, i took my defective power adapter to my local apple store and they replaced it no questions asked there and then. Man They're all so nice there! I really do appreciate having an apple store with twenty minutes of me! Anyway hope everyone else's power packs are ok!

Frohike

battery backups and surge protectors help with things like this. It could have been some kind of power spike. But, I'm not an electrical engineer.

most likely in that case the power brick itself would have took the hit and started on fire, setting the wall on fire and just making it a lot worse.

I believe this was an issue with the power supplies that shipped with the original CD MB/Ps, I think they updated the insulation in the cord. In any case it is still best to grasp the plug and not the cord while unplugging it.

Scary stuff. I've wrapped the ends of my cables and am hoping it keeps them from catching fire. I'm pretty sure my Macbook is the last Apple laptop I'll buy until they redesign the Mag"safe", because...it isn't.

err.. they did a couple of months ago.

nice job bumping a 6 month old topic.

you should have let it catch fire and then burn your house down. you then hire the best attorney in the country to go after the Jobs empire in full force.

retirement could come at a very early age for ya. :p
