After being out of the android game for 2 years, I wanted to give it another go. I have a nexus 5 but I don't use it much. I've got a S6 Edge+ on the way through verizon. I'm also using this opportunity to test verizon's network versus AT&T. I will be going to LA next weekend for a few days and am looking forward to testing the networks and phones out there for navigation and such.

Impressions after a few days.

Screen – The first thing you notice is the screen. It is gorgeous. The edge really makes it look neat. This is definitely one of the best displays on the market. I use the clock on the edge screen as a clock next to my bed since I don’t have one and it’s actually pretty nice, although I noticed sometimes it’ll get hung up and lag a few minutes behind before it catches up.

Battery – This one hasn’t been so great for me. I cannot figure out why, even after doing a full reset in the bootloader, why cell standby is killing my battery. I get good reception both at home and at work (-93dbm at work and -78dbm at home) but the cell standby has been the number one battery drain every day so far. Yesterday I got 2:45 of screen on time when it died.

Build quality – Phenomenal. Samsung has really stepped their game up in this department, the build quality on my S3 was horrible, but this is much, much better. The buttons are super solid, something that cannot be said for my old 5s. The back (obviously) doesn’t creak or feel hollow either, which is nice.

Software – This is a big one for me. In my opinion, software is really what makes or breaks a phone. Forget all the hardware ‘specs’ like the OEMs advertise; they’re all top of the line today.

To start, Samsung has really slimmed down the experience of touchwiz from the S3-S5. All of those had too many useless features that made the experience worse. But now, with the omission of many of those, the experience is undoubtedly better, but there is still much room to improve. I own a nexus 5 as well, and I really don’t have many complaints about stock android. However, I always have enjoyed stock android. Back on my S3, I had a custom rom of stock android for much of my time since touchwiz was so bloated.

I tried the touchwiz launcher for a day, but couldn’t do it. Google now launcher is great, I’m actually using it over Nova prime. Google now has improved a lot since I used it last, the parking feature is so cool and has been deadly accurate thus far. However, that being said, I have never lost my car and it’s much more of a novelty than a useful feature, that’s sort of the story with a lot of the features though.

An annoyance that I have is samsung’s icons. They used to be better IMO, the S3 touchwiz icons were more square instead of oval like they currently are, and they matched the rest of the icons better. I know this can be easily changed by installing an icon pack, but it’s just an extra step that some won’t know how to do.

Camera – I was really looking forward to this, I’ve read great things about it and didn’t see much of an improvement over my 6s from my 5s, I was excited how the S6 compares. It certainly didn’t disappoint, the camera is outstanding. You can definitely tell the image processing is more aggressive, but that’s not a bad thing if it improves the picture. One thing I don’t like is how the front camera softens the image to make your face look better. It looks like I’m wearing makeup.

Misc. – Quick charging is soooo nice! It’s crazy fast just like everyone says. The fingerprint scanner is good too, miles better than the S5’s and Note 4’s, but no match for the 6p and 6s scanners. I’m sure it’ll be improved in the S7. I wish there was a unified email inbox where I could put my pop account, work exchange, and gmail account. Using 2 email clients is annoying and the built in Samsung one isn’t great.

Isn't that for games? I don't play games. I use my phone for work (email, text, phone), personal use, and social media.
You can watch movies like netflix too on it...and it feels like you r in an imax theater

Curious to hear how it goes. I personally would never buy a Samsung device, but I'd like to test one out one day. I can't handle TouchWiz on a daily driver, but I could deal with it for a few days if needed to test drive a GS6.

I'm not a fan of touchwiz either, I had a galaxy s3 back in the day and touchwiz was such a memory hog. I know they've thinned it out since then though.

I had a S3 too and the difference from then to the Note 5/S6 is night and day. :)

Yup, I'm looking forward to trying it. If it gets delivered within the next hour, I'm going to stop home to grab it during lunch and mess with it at work.

Update after roughly 24 hours:

There are still so many hiccups in touchwiz and android, yet everyone always says it's so buttery smooth. When there's more than 4 or so notifications in the pulldown, it lags like crazy when pulling it down. They have certainly made it much smoother since I owned my S3, but it's still no match for iOS in terms of smoothness. The camera is also a mess from the lockscreen. Sometimes when I open the camera from the lockscreen, without unlocking the phone, it'll show a quick glimpse of my homescreen when I close the camera then go back to showing the lockscreen again after a split second. It's little nuances like that where I miss iOS.

I charged it to full overnight after getting it all setup, quick charging is absolutely awesome! I used it for about 15min this morning and was down to about 90% when I left it at my desk at 9am-1pm for a meeting. I came back and it was at 73%, that's with nothing running in the background and I only got like 5 notifications in that time-frame. I have 3/5 bars of LTE at my desk and it was on wi-fi the whole time anyways. In comparison, I brought my 6s to my meeting with around 90% battery too and used it for a total of around 45min during that 4 hour time-frame, keep in mind I was in a low signal strength area for 3 hours of the meeting, and it was at 72% when I got back to my desk. So, android has not fixed it's random battery drain problems, which is unacceptable in my book.

The camera seems really good in good lighting, in low lighting, the image processing makes it look like a painting, extremely soft. And the front facing camera makes me look like I'm wearing makeup all the time with the glamour crap.

Click on the battery graph to see the network signal strength. Your cell standby uses a whopping 13%. Cell standby is usually 1-2% for me with good reception on any Android phones. I noticed you said you have 3-5 bars. However the network signal should give you a better idea of your reception.

I was trying to look at the graph earlier because often looked at it on my S3, but it appears samsung omitted it from touchwiz, nothing happens when I click on the graph. Like I said, I have strong LTE signal at my desk (3+ bars).

Oh, hmm. I haven't used a Samsung device in a while. However your reception is causing issues with your standby time or at least something relating to your reception. Usually when I am in a low signal area my cell stand by shoots up to the top of the battery usage.
I know you said that your reception is good. I guess my point is, what is happening to your phone is not normal if your signal is good.

Right, the signal is good, 93dbm, which is decently strong, nowhere near fringe LTE.

Did u say activating the camera is a mess. From turned off to camera ready in a second is a mess.. double click the home button, done., seems to me like you are wanting it to fail.. if that's the case. Why did you bother in the first place..

First impression: Samsung said it would arrive on 12/13 (Sunday??) but it won't arrive until (12/15). Not sure why they'd be so optimistic the date, it only shipped Friday.

Anyways, I will be updating this thread throughout my experience.

Update 12/15:

Received the phone today, the unboxing experience wasn't great. I was expecting samsung to step it up if they want to win over iPhone users. My initial impressions are very mixed.

How do you make opening a box a better experience.. do you want party poppers to go off, dancing girls to jump out. ? I don't get it, as long as the product is safe and secure. . What more do you want...

Am I not allowed to share my observations? It's little things like this that are annoying to me because it just shows a big lack of refinement. Not that it's the only indication...

Do you understand what the point of the UTDE is? It's to win over iPhone users. You'd think they'd at least make the presentation as nice as apple. Not that I care much, it's just an observation. Not to mention the phone wasn't exactly fully secure.

I saw where this was going well before it began. Just like all the other Test Drive threads. You will almost never have anything near an objective opinion when you have dedicated Apple diehards "Test Driving" a Samsung device. Notice I didn't say Android device. That's not to say one should pick a Samsung device over an Apple device because someone else says so, but when the complaints are about things like a picture of an open box, or one of The Best cameras around, well.... You know the rest. Again, it's totally believable for someone to choose an iPhone over a Galaxy S or Note line. The same way one can pick Apple maps over Google maps. But you know what I mean.

Now the secure issue is deffo An issue, but everything else is just fluff surely after you have picked the handset up.. can you not agree it's the prettiest handset ever made..
And that's before you turn on the screen to see professionally validated as the best mobile display ever made..
In some respects I feel a tad sorry for the diehard ifans.. they so want the edge plus but after years of slagging samsung off they just could never buy it. Can you imagine the stick they would get lol

Whenever I pick my 6s up now it feels like it's from 2010. The edge is gorgeous. Extra functionally is yet to be seen, however.
