Windows Vista is a complete mess, they need to scrap all the old code and tangled up rubbish that is in windows vista, and start from fresh, like apple did although this would be a huge task, the benefits would be a reliable and stable operating system they need to go through what apple did with OSX,

From what I understand, Microsoft stripped down Server 2003 and built Vista off of that. Much of Vista is new code.

Though I'm sure you have access to Windows Vista source code and obviously have used the RTM version. ;)

Okay I checked Task Manager. While nothing is running, 10% of the CPU is being used and 58% of the memory. Seems a bit much, eh?

The computer we're running it on is a Dell Dimension E510 with 1GB of RAM and a 2.80GHz processor. The version of Vista is the Ultimate version.

Daniel.
That sounds about right. Vista seems to use a lot of RAM off of boot. The idle CPU usage is a lot higher then XP too.

That makes it look even more like a ripoff of Tiger. is that the default background now?

Nah, I took it off because my manager would get pissed. We're an authorized Dell retailer as well as an authorized Apple Store. Even though I'm the Mac Specialist, I have to be fair and knowledgeable about Windows-based systems too.

Quite honestly, I hope the final version of Boot Camp will run Vista. It is the most pleasant version of Windows I've ever worked on. The more I use it, the more I like it. I wouldn't mind having it to access Windows-only games when I get an Intel Mac. But OS X still blows it away. Plus, as soon as Vista is released, you know it's going to have viruses coming out of every conceivable orifice.

Daniel.

I'll be installing it this week on a platform that is designed to support it. Dual Core 2Ghz, 256mb graphics card and 2gb RAM. In 12-18 months when Vista has matured and is ready for deployment those kind of specs will be the norm.

wait... microsoft released vista....
i guess it hasn't been a big hit
No, Vista will not be available through retail channels until January next year.

Developing an Operating System to the standard of Vista with the full backwards compatibility offered by Windows from scratch is an unthinkable task. Apple was able to do this by taking an existing code base and modifying it to meet their needs. If Apple were creating OS X from scratch then we would still be waiting for the first beta.

thats the power of unix.
No, that's the power of your hardware ;)

Sean :)

Oh my! That screen shot REEKS of cloning! They've even got the puzzle game thing! And the clock! The weather is almost exactly the same!

I was thinking of upgrading the family PC to Vista, but not any more.

totally agree, somebody always forget that the OSX is not an invention by apple in 2001.

This is actually one of Microsoft's biggest problems (IMHO of course).

Backwards compatibility has been king at Microsoft for a long time and it means they have to keep plenty of old buggy code around in the Main OS (for the sake of compatibility) even though they could just follow Apple's path and provide a "compatibility sandbox" for older apps (like Classic or Rosetta).

Yet, they still break enough backwards compatibility that you end up having to buy certain apps again anyhow, it's a conspiracy. :p

Don't forget Carbon, a big part of the OS X success, a rather huge and drastic rewrite of the guts of OS 9 that allowed the recompiled apps to make the transition easier for everyone.

M$ will eventually copy it..........in 5 years ;)

Ha, I almost havve the exact same thing on my Vista RC1 in Parallels, Desktop Background, gadgets. Vista is one of the worst OS's I've ever used, I've used EVERYTHING! (almost)
(including:many linux distros, FreeBSD, Solaris, Every version of Windoze from 3.1, from Mac OS System 6).

Don't get me wrong. I hate everything that is Windows. Vista is proving to be nothing more than a prettier XP with a bunch of features ripped straight from OS X.

Daniel.

I also feel that Microsoft doesn't back up and stand behind their OS in terms of support and that once you get it, you're on your own with little help from forums.

Apple on the other hand, has excellent support services from AppleCare phone support to the Genius Bar.

Any word on if or how well iTunes7 runs on Vista? I have a copy of Vista Beta 2 that I was thinking of trying but don't want to live without my iTunes if it doesn't work. Life would be so much easier for me if I just had a Mac.

go get a mac, if that helps you that much.

Well, I intent to do just that, but there is a story behind all that. To long to go into in any detail, but I have a couple of things that I do that I need a Windows machine. I have a PowerBook G5 from work, but I need to be careful about putting non work related stuff on it. I have a a copy of Vista, and I have a pretty good idea what will and will not work, but I just wasn't sure about iTunes. Hopefully sometime next year, i'll have an iMac as well.
