I can't wait to see the final version - looks very cool.

I would probably order one if it they were available around the price of £500ish, and was entirely legal. Good work though.

One last thought. Why don't you see if you can get an IR sensor working for Frontrow? You could hide it behind the front panel...

That would be an awesome idea!

You should also get ahold of an sight (though they are still $200) so you can use photo booth and video chat.

If not, the OP's next project could be making a brand.x webcam look like an iSight...

I've been thinking about mounting that inside, poking the ir sensor through one of the holes...

A quick note to all, my girlfriend is currently staying at mine so I don't have any time to pursue this project until tuesday (1st)

Rest assured, once she goes home I'm going to get some L brackets and get this mother on the road

EDIT:

Too easy, just get some steel piping, cut holes for airflow and mount the circuitry in the base :p

I remember when I wasn't a teen yet, Apple had PowerMacs that were under $2000. Those were the days of a cheap pro tower.

And these are the days of getting very old Power Macintosh 7100/80s for £3 at a car boot sale :D

I AM ON THE DARK SIDE!!!!

I managed to get hold of a copy of vista from work, so I thought I might as well see what all the fuss is about, can't say I'm more dissapointed :D

Took about 20 minutes for it to extract 1% of the installation files, then 15 for the other 99%...

(btw, "installing features" was nearly instant to install, can't be that many then can there :p)

Overall installation was about an hour and a half...

And then when it was "booting for the first time" (which turned out to just go back into the installation screen....) it showed me a delightfully large amout of dots, each dot taking about 5 seconds to load, calculate the time it took from this picture :D

(this is not a maths test)

Ok so, Vista has now died on me, aside from not liking the product key that came with it (thank god I got it for free or I'd be so pissed :p) it now locks on shutdown :D

These are the final bits and bobs I'll be getting to put the "Mac" in xMac :p

And a little mac compatible bluetooth adapter.

Gunna switch my wireless keyboard and mouse and put it with xMac and get one of those new thin alu keyboards and a wired mighty mouse.

You know, I've been following this thread for ages. Really cool project! :D

Anyway, I have found that the Linksys WPC54G ver. 1 cards work out-of-the-box in Leopard; they're recognized as APX, and are usually very cheaply found.

Thought I'd save ya some money! I've been using the same cards in my G4s for, like, EVAR.:D

Please, seriously, I work full time and am quite lazy, the mere fact I even started this project is a miracle, it will be finished, it just takes time...

So, everyone has asked all the other questions, how when, etc.

I want to know ....why? What is the point of this? Seriously, if you want a Mac, buy a Mac. Why go to all this trouble for something that will be a nightmare to upgrade (waiting on more illegal releases of osx86), flakey in performance with certain applications (don't tell me Rosetta will run flawlessly, I read forums too) and will bear you will gain nothing extra that you can't already get with a Mac.

So please, I'd like to know WHY you are doing this.

I'm not Schtumple, but this project makes total sense to me. It's a fun challenge to create the "Mac" he wants, and I admire him for doing it. If I had any talent and imagination, I would so want to give this a spin.

That said, I would like to hear what Schtumple has to say about it.

Ok, it's early, I'm cold, and I didn't get much sleep last night, so lets cut the niceties shall we.

Urgh, seriously, it's people like you that I really can't bear, I'm doing this project for fun, I forgot I had to have the same pessimistic outlook as you. I guess when you were young you never built little projects, I had hundreds, hell, I made a soap box racer when I was 9, it had steering, doors, brakes, a radio, the full shebang.

Little projects like these are not something I want to give up, no matter how "hard" or how much energy it requires.

I have several macs already, including a mac mini which is doing the media/msn TV computer job that this project will be fulfilling, maybe just maybe, instead of going out and buying a whole ton of new computer, I wanted to recycle my old PC and use it for once.

Why go to all this trouble for something that will be a nightmare to upgrade (waiting on more illegal releases of osx86).

Oh no, you'll have 10.5.3 a few weeks before me, I must abandon this project completely now based on that tiny iota of knowledge...

flakey in performance with certain applications (don't tell me Rosetta will run flawlessly, I read forums too) and will bear you will gain nothing extra that you can't already get with a Mac.

As far as I'm aware, I don't use a a single app that runs in rosetta, and my PC specs aren't far off my iMacs so it's hardly going to be this noticeable gap you think it will be, I used my PC as a OSX86 machine to try out mac, I liked the performance so much I went out and bought a £800 C2D iMac...

So please, I'd like to know WHY you are doing this.

Because I dam well can, I severely hope you didn't think your comments would make any impact on this project, because it really didn't, if anything, I'm now more determined....

Thanks for dropping by, please don't post in this thread anymore, your thoughts are the tiny minority that sours the mac community and I'd rather you left your trolling for one of the many iPhone threads.
