Apple Silicone sounds sexy.
But it's NOT Apple Silicone. Silicone is a chemical compound used for sealing things. The chips are made of Silicon, an element on the periodic table. As someone that grew up in a household with a chemical engineer father who worked in a facility that made silicone I learned the difference quickly...

I assumed that was humour. See above.

Apple Silicon seems a reasonable name, but it won't abbreviate well.
Again, I don't see "Apple Silicon" as the long-term name for the chips. Apple probably hasn't solidified a marketing strategy and is just referencing them as Silicon for now because it's another way to say "computer chip" and is actually a better descriptor because they're really SoC's rather than a single individual processor.

Today, I went with my girlfriend to a plastic surgeon. When asked what type of silicon we wanted, I said Apple as I hear great things about Apple silicon. But somehow the plastic surgeon never heard about it.

I think Apple needs to improve their marketing if they want to have serious customers. Does anyone know if there are plastic surgeons that are “Apple certified”?

More than likely, because plastic surgeons have NEVER used silicon (essentially purified, melted beach sand). They used silicone (basically a gel) at one time, but that, too, has been discontinued for many years. While they have a common element (Silicon (Si)), they otherwise have nothing in common.

I know this was a (very poor) attempt at humor, it really isn't humerous in any way. It is a very obvious display of ignorance.

Does anybody remember Silicon Graphics (the one time graphics workstation company). I wonder why nobody made jokes about them.

It’s what it is.

Michelin rubber refers to tires. It doesn’t matter if you think it’s “lame”. They’re not even exactly rubber any more but it’s commonly understood.

When I was working at Microsoft, I remember one dev moaning, “Apple introduces this great photography program calls it ‘Aperture’”. Our marketing people would have called it Microsoft Paintbrush Professional 2005 Gold Edition“.

Another dev added, “...Unlimited.”

A third added, ”...Deluxe.”

Yeah, “PowerPC ARM Version 2”. Because the more adjectives and superlatives you add, the better. Even if they don’t mean anything.

That really sums up Microsoft rather beautifully. Except they would then go on to rebrand it 6 times in the following ten years and it would end up being called. Pro Paintbrush Deluxe Microsoft Gold Edition.

I don’t like Apple silicon. It doesn’t sound very healthy to eat an Apple made out of silicon.

I prefer real biological Apple’s and it is cheaper too.

Sorry to state the above, but I think Apple should just call it a PowerPC ARM V2.. silicon is too lame and has no significance in the computer industry.. maybe for cellphones, but not for the macs - I plan to update my 2015 Macbook Pro and get an ARM MacBook Pro and on the notebook will place a sticker saying: PowerPC V2 inside.
I really hate these chips being referred to colloquially as “apple silicon” - makes me cringe. But the correct name e.g. Axx is so boring - there’s no magic.

PowerPC G4 with AltiVec, on the other hand, just sounds strong, solid, and highly engineered (which it was!)

aha I sound so stupid - there are bigger issues in the world for me to be worried about...

Well, if you find i9-9900K magic/exciting, then I supposed you could stay with the Intel Macs until Apple comes out with a sexier/more exciting name for its CPUs, or wait for Apple to go with AMD for the Ryzen 5 3700X.

Seriously, these are chunks of silicon buried deep within the (laptop/desktop) system. The names are not supposed to be sexy, just a general indicator of potential performance.

Whooosh! That one went right over your head, didn't it?

I think UBS28 knows the difference between Silicon (the element) and Silicone (the polymer), and I thought his joke was at least a moderately funny poke at those who confuse the two

Or do we all have to be super-serious when we discuss anything related to technology names? Remember all those iPad jokes referring to maxi-pads? Good times....

I'm pretty sure that IBM still owns the PowerPC trademark, so that would be no-go for Apple.

No it didn't; its just not funny, in an essentially stupid thread. As for poking fun at those who confuse the two, how many of them are in threads like this, or in a more general sense, on MacRumors?

The Maxii-Pad jokes were funny, the first couple of times. When repeated thousands of times, they weren't funny, just repetitive and stupid.

get ready for goofy product line up names similar to cars. Apple Mac GTX or Turbo S. I think they'll start moving away from 'MacBook Pro', 'MacBook Air', and even 'iMac'.

These days isn't everything "silicon" though??, as in SoC (Silicon on a Chip).. They had to call it something.. so i guess why not something oblivious.
