How about Brandy? There was a song about a sailer, I never questioned it then, but now I’m thinking about a name based on an alcoholic beverage? Beer, Whiskey, Vodka, Merlot, Hmm. :)

The other day I read an article in the paper quoting someone named Gypsyamber Something-or-other and I thought, WTH???? Who would name their kid something that sounds like a striptease or pole dance act?! Sheesh! What is interesting is that in spite of that awful name the woman is actually quite successful in her chosen field and is highly educated. Go figure....

Plenty of pornstars names start out out with Brandy, Candy, etc.

If you are thinking of naming your daughter one of those names, google it first with both just the first name and then with the full name to see if you might be setting her up with the same name as some gal you don't want her googling her own name to find "also named".

I think it’s a beautiful name, and she is quite a fantastic scientist too, focusing on cancer research.

She is indeed quite a fantastic scientist! When I saw her name I was intrigued because the article was about something scientific, which at first glance stuck me as being rather at odds with that name....so I read the article and was immediately fascinated and impressed by this woman, who regardless of a name which on the surface could strike many as being one associated with burlesque, pole dancing, stripteasing, etc., actually has moved way on past that, transcends it, to use her obviously extensive natural intellectual gifts to do something amazing and beneficial to the world at large.

This example is probably only one of many which remind us that we shouldn't just judge people by their name or take at face value what seems to be a name which is popular in certain elements of society but set the name aside and really look at the person him/herself and his or her achievements.

Two things I find very distasteful.

Giving a kid the same name as one of the parents or using Jr. Put your ego aside and let ghe kid have its own identity.

Giving all the kids first names all starting with the same letter.

My mom gave me and 2 other siblings, the same first, middle and last name initials. I have my daughter the same initials as well, which doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is her name is spelled the exact same way it’s pronounced, and I still have people asking me every time how to spell her name. Granted, the city we live in, many people use a common name but spell it in a ridiculous way that make you question it. I made sure my kids have easy names to spell and that wouldn’t have people question their names on job applications and college applications.

My name is very easy to spell. It's only four letters. It is, E-r-i-k. Erik.

Yet people still manage to consistently screw it up every time with every combination of letters you can think of. People make assumptions and 9 times out of 10 they are wrong. It's rare when I am actually asked how it's properly spelled. You get used to stating your name and adding "With a 'k'".

So being easy to spell is not necessarily a guarantee that the name will be spelled right.

I imagine that even those out there named Eric might agree.

My name is Stacey and people always spell it Stacy, and it pisses me off to no end. I know Stacy is more common, but how many times do I have to tell people to add the e. I’ve had this problem growing up my whole life.

I once worked with a guy whose name was Stacie. No lie, that was his name. If a name has any known spelling variations I usually ask people how they spell it because I've had my own name mangled my entire life.

My son's name is Gunnar. People automatically assume it's an 'e' (as in Gunner) whenever they hear it. Never mind that Gunnar Nelson spells his name with an 'a' too!

Gunnar is Scandinavian. I'm 6th gen, Swede, so it makes sense to me. I guess though if we had chosen the German version of the name (Gunther) people wouldn't spell it wrong so much! ;)

I went to school with a guy name Stacy and he hated his name. My daughter’s name is Shayla but a lot of people can’t spell it even though it’s spelled the way it’s pronounced. My son’s name is Logan and of course his father is a huge comic book fanatic and picked his name out. He also didn’t tell me until later that his middle name is also related to comic books.

I went to school with a Shayleen (white girl, Shay for short)., worked with a woman name Sharla (again, white woman) and also knew a Lauranelle.

Shows how old I am though because you said Logan and my thoughts were not comic books, they were Logan's Run. :D

If you told me your daughters name was Shayla and spelled the way it is pronounced, I would say ok... Sheala. As I am familiar with the actual word shea, as in shea butter.

I went to school with a guy called Stacey. As I’d never met or heard of a girl called Stacey, I’d not even made the assumption it could be a girls name as well. Funny isn’t it?

I’ve known a few blokes with names you’d probably normally associate with a female. Ceri and Lindsey being the ones. Obviously names like Terri can be both too.

If anyone likes Fleetwood Mac you have Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks who you’d assume on first thought they would be the other way around in terms of being male and female lol.

Showing your age there!

Whenever I heard Logan all I thought about Wolverine.

over the years, a few males I saw with the name were spelled Stacy. I still haven’t personally met any Stacey with the same spelling as mine.

Yes, the names Lindsay/Lindsey, Stacy/Stacey, Terry/Terri/Teri are all names which can be either given to a male or a female. Another name which I think used to be more for males, Ashley, is now much more seen for females and can be spelled in various ways "Ashleigh," "Ashlie", etc. Morgan is another name which can be either for a boy or a girl.

Another trend seems to be giving girls first names which were originally family names, such as "Madison." I've also seen the name "Addison" used by both males and females.

And then there still seems to be the ever-popular "Jennifer" or "Jessica" for girls.....

There’s a child in my daughters school who is called Calador. Apparently his parents like Cala D’or in Majorca and felt this was a great name for their son who is about as far removed from looking Spanish as you can get . I mean I’ve been to Cala D’or myself aa few times and it’s a lovely place, but so is Bournemouth. I wouldn’t name my child after a place though lol.
