Wow this is exciting. I'm very new to this, but does that mean that I could potentially therefore play 1080p quicktime movies from my itune library to my appletv? Or do I NEED to use XBMC?

Thanks
Mo

I'm curios as to this as well. I've used XBMC on my mini...it sounds like you install the XBMC software on the AppleTV and use that interface rather than the one originally on the ATV.

If anyone can confirm that would be great..if not, I'll guess I'll find out when I try to go through the steps.

Thats right guys- you need to install the card inside your atv, download the appropriate drivers and then watch videos through the latest unreleased builds of xbmc. Not for the faint hearted.

The hope is that the same techniques can be used within Perian to allow you to use nitotv to play your movies. Don't expect to use the main interface at any point tho.

Either suck it and see or wait until the final release. There are big troubles with interlaced content at the moment and the current builds of XBMC don't support displaying 1080p through HDMI properly. If you wanna dabble jump in, but dont expect it to solve all your problems, yet.

I read in another guide that you should also use copper tape on the WLAN antenna cable when you remove it. Is that necessary? With both electrical tape and copper tape?

I think you are mistaken- the guide I followed says to tuck the wires under the copper ribbon nearby to prevent them touching the main board and accidentally shorting something.

List of mini's that are supported?

I have a PPC mini (can't remember the speed 1.2 or 1.4 if I recall correctly, at work right now) and was wondering if this would work in it. I don't have wireless in it or bluetooth.

Has anyone published a list of what Apple machines this could be installed into?

Thanks

Yeah I probably misunderstood.

Just wanted to say Hi to OP.
Can't PM.
Used to live in Colchester and was also in the print trade.
Emigrated to Canada 14 months ago and am now getting into home theatre, so I may be picking your brains before to long!!!
Cheers

Thanks for all the help guys, the guides look simple to use.
One more thing, I know this may sound stupid but do I lose wifi on my Apple TV with this installed? I can hook it up wired so it's not the biggest problem. Just curious.

Thanks

Well, I installed 2 Broadcom cards in an appleTV and my 1.6 GHz Mini yesterday and this morning, and put together an installation guide over here on AVS Forums. Granted, most of it is just links to the various resources I used, but it might save some folks the work of searching the xbmc forums.

I was incredibly impressed overall. Although the nightlies of XBMC still have some serious quirks, I find it pretty amazing to see my BR archives playing on these 2 pieces of hardware.

And, FTR, I paid $23 each for the 2 broadcom chips (plus $20 for the putty knife and a couple of other tools over at ifixit) over on ebay.

Talk about cheap upgrades!

You mean like stuttering and poor codec support?

I don't have any stuttering issues, I only had stuttering problems when that crappy software was installed. To be honest I wanted to see what the big fuss was all about. It truly sucked, it served absolutely no purpose.

What codecs do you need?

Most people complaining about codec support are trying to play movies on their system which have been obtained through certain means which I do not care to discuss.

I have to restart my ATV two or three times a night because it locks up so much.

Yeah, like 1080p.

DTS passthrough, for one. 720p 30fps or 60fps would also be nice.

So you don't want to discuss ripping one's disks. OK.

Take it to :apple:, have someone look at it. Mine runs perfectly fine.

Yeah, like 1080p.

I have 50 inch 1080p TV, I have 1080p material on my computer, and I own a samsung BluRay player, and for some reason I still encode my movies (720p) using compressor to be able to watch it on my :apple:TV. 1080p isn't what it's cracked up to be. Most people who come over can't tell the difference.

I'm with you on this one. I like DTS audio. And I miss it.

We all know why people want different codec support (MKV, xvid). Don't be naive.

You can easily tell on a 10 ft screen. ;)

You won't get it on the ATV's Front Row unless Apple allows us to use a container other than MPEG4 since it cannot contain a DTS track.

Hardly naive. I want MKV because you can put DTS audio in it. Most Blu-ray discs come with DTS-HD audio, but the ATV doesn't support DTS. For those movies you're either stuck with DPLII or you have to transcode the DTS to AC3. If the ATV could do 1080p and m2ts or MKV containers, there'd be no need to have two copies of each movie (one for the 1080p system, one for the 720p system).

Ok guys chill now - if you don't want a part of this, please stay away from the thread. I'm sure caveman knows more about this subject than pretty much anyone else you're going to run up against on MR so show the man some respect. Just cause you can get illegal files to play with XBMC doesnt mean you're gonna. - lecture over.

Caveman- I hear there are a few faulty cards floating around, so do be careful who you buy from - I think your possibly quite wise to stay away from the Hong Kong sellers, but bare in mind most of these cards are possibly sourced from returns (just a guess mind). I got mine from a uk seller and it seems to be fine, but this thread might help you out:

http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69219&page=2

They all seem to be happy from the ebay seller 'dreambestbuy' - but he is from Hong Kong.
