. Navigon puts up a static image with the text for the specific sign and the arrows showing which way to go, replacing the actual navigation screen. It does not show the vehicon and stays until you've passed the point of the split.

Or until you touch the screen. That flips it back to the nav view.

TomTom is good, Navigon is good and it sounds as if a few others such as iGo are good.

Which makes it better for us. Competition and not releasing the app and being done with it.

That said, I'm more that happy with Navigon. It works well, I like the maps, the price was good, it beat TT out and it's working on a 1.2 release already.

if you plan on getting the cradle then TomTom would be your best choice if you want even better signal

thanks Vandam. Lots of praise on this thread for Navigon, but I think I'll have to sacrifice some of the UI advantages (and whatever else) of Navigon for a stronger signal. And as someone said, if I really don't like TomTom, I can always keep using the TT cradle, but get Navigon later on.
Appreciate the advice.

Geezus every GPS thread I see here the Navigon is destroying TomTom in terms of people's opinions. That is nuts. And now on the App Store TomTom is showing average reviews while Navigon holds 4 stars. Damn.

Average reviews with a higher price tag. I am so happy I went with Navigon! Plus with the upcoming enhancements it's all that much better. I'm not sure why anyone would buy TomTom, probably the name recognition factor.

That's true. I mean, the TomTom is great but Navigon IMO is better and 1.2 is gonna own!!

I have no idea!! Was thinking about it too! Anybody know?

Its either red light cameras or radar/speed trap cameras. Perhaps someone from across the "pond" can give us the translation.

BTW, I bought Navigon last week right before TT came out and I'm glad I did. Used it on a six hour trip and it was perfect. Never lost signal, etc. I also happen to really like their version of the reality view. Clearly marked arrows and road signs show what lane you should be in....I don't need to see my icon moving down the road when I need to know what lane I should be in.

And if you want to see the icon, just tap the screen.

The only thing I could think of is using the TomTom dock, but won't that be compatible with the Navigon too?

Can someone help me out?

NEVER owned a GPS turn by turn device of any kind.

What is TTS and what would it do for me? (I know it is text to speech, but I am looking for more specifics.)

Thanks in advance..

All it does is pronounce the name of
the streets, highways,etc.

Example, now with 1.1 it says "Turn Left". With 1.2 it will say "Turn left on Elm Street".

It soooo much better! Can't wait till 1.2:)

Oh good lord.

Common sense and my pea brain can't get it.

Sad.

Thanks! :D

Quick question, does TomTom have this TTS already? Is this Navigon playing catch up with this respect?

Cheers

TomTom doesn't have TTS, atleast yet. But now that Navigon announced it I think it would stupid if tomtom didn't add this with an update

Has Navigon got full 7 digit postcode support in this update? (UK)

TomToms directions are far better, and much easier to read street names. The other night I needed to find a street name on my map, and I literally had to switch to TomTom. Not sure why I was even using Navigon.... I guess I like to rotate haha.

My Navigon wish list

First, I love the new UI - it's creative and very iPhone "standard" at the same time. Bravo!

I am a bit of a GPS junkie - so I have Navigon, TomTom and Copilot. And I'm trying all 3 to see which one I like best. This new functionality it going to push Navigon a long way but...

Like d3lta, I feel that GPS lock on Navigon is A) longer and B) more sensitive. This is in comparison to TomTom, Copilot and even the Google Map app. No, it's not "5 minutes" but it is absolutely the longest & most sensitive of the GPS apps that I own.

Second, I wish Navigon's maps were more up-to-date (the eternal wish for all GPS', I know). For example, I live in the Charlotte NC area. A new section of I-485 opened in the last year - under construction for a couple of years. I drove it yesterday and tried all 4 apps (including Google Maps). Copilot & Google had that new section - Navigon & TomTom did not. From what I understand, Navigon uses Navteq, TomTom uses Teleatlas and Copilot uses their own "ALK maps" in the US. So ALK's own maps are more up to date than Navteq and Teleatlas? I'm talking about an interstate highway, not a small new subdivision/neighborhood.

Map View of different Apps

Can someone tell me if any or each of the key GSP apps (Navigon, Co-Pilot, TomTom) has the ability to change the view of the maps to different distances (1/16 mile, 1/8 mile, 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, etc.)? My in car GPS lets you adjust this view on the fly, and I haven't seen this pointed out in any app, but I would hope that it exists. Thx.

it warns you of speed cameras (radar or laser - depending on where you live)

not sure about red light cameras, we don't really have those in the uk
We have zillions of them in and around London. In TomTom I have the warnings switched off though as they seem pointless - I wouldn't handle traffic lights with cameras any different to those without.
