Can someone tell me if any or each of the key GSP apps (Navigon, Co-Pilot, TomTom) has the ability to change the view of the maps to different distances (1/16 mile, 1/8 mile, 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, etc.)? My in car GPS lets you adjust this view on the fly, and I haven't seen this pointed out in any app, but I would hope that it exists. Thx.

TomTom has + and - buttons for zooming in navigation mode, and gestures (pinch) during map browsing. Navigon has gestures for zooming, but in map browse mode only - not while navigating.

This features does exist on iGO MyWay.

Uh, seriously?

Pretty sure those screenshots aren't the actual size of an iPhone, and yet I can see that the street names listed are "Harvestehude" and "Rotherbaum."

Feel free to invest in some glasses/contact lenses...

I believe he might be talking about the street names on the map itself. I tried the free version of Navigon and refused to buy it because of this. Knowing what streets are coming up is critical IMO.

The iphone's screen is just too small to keep the font this tiny. If you mount the iphone, it won't be in front of your face like when it's in your hand.

TTS is coming to the rescue ;)

Please tell me you arent that dense... Screenshots ALWAYS look better than your actual screen. You cant read street names on the app at all more than 2 feet from your face.

My $500 Garmin with a larger screen is even worse at trying to find streets by name.

However, since I almost never am panning around trying to find a street that way it's not much of an issue.

Voice on Navigon problem?

Navigon has already submitted North America 1.2 for approval so the update should be available very soon. I got Navigon soon after TT was released--it's obviously subjective, but I think Navigon looks a lot nicer. So far I'm really happy with my choice, but a couple of times there have been no voice prompts, even when the route to destination appears on the map with the current location shown and volume set on full. Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas?

I have occasionally had it miss a voice prompt or stop doing them for a short time and then start doing it again.

It has not happened very often and usually seems to be triggered by making a wrong turn and getting re routed.

I suspect that it is a bug that will be fixed in 1.2 or a later release.

aaaannnnndddd still impossible to read street names

Ain't that the truth. I owned a Navigon PND for a few weeks, and returned it. My major issue was that it was UNREADABLE while still driving in a safe manner. From colors, to the size of text and graphics.

Sure it looks great while holding the thing in your hands as a passenger, but it's horrible when you actually have to use it.

I can't quite understand why you guys are staring at the screen in the first place. The whole idea of turn by turn navigation is that you enter the street or intersection you are trying to get to and let it guide you there with on screen guidance and voice prompts.

I've been using GPS units for over eight years and I've never needed to pore over the map looking for street names. If I need to find something I punch it in, or use the POI to help me find eats, gas, etc.

I love the fact that they quickly came out with a 1.1 to fix some big things so quickly (before Tomtom even made it out) and now a 1.2 with some big fixes and added features have already been submitted.

First, I love the new UI - it's creative and very iPhone "standard" at the same time. Bravo!

I am a bit of a GPS junkie - so I have Navigon, TomTom and Copilot. And I'm trying all 3 to see which one I like best. This new functionality it going to push Navigon a long way but...

Like d3lta, I feel that GPS lock on Navigon is A) longer and B) more sensitive. This is in comparison to TomTom, Copilot and even the Google Map app. No, it's not "5 minutes" but it is absolutely the longest & most sensitive of the GPS apps that I own.

Second, I wish Navigon's maps were more up-to-date (the eternal wish for all GPS', I know). For example, I live in the Charlotte NC area. A new section of I-485 opened in the last year - under construction for a couple of years. I drove it yesterday and tried all 4 apps (including Google Maps). Copilot & Google had that new section - Navigon & TomTom did not. From what I understand, Navigon uses Navteq, TomTom uses Teleatlas and Copilot uses their own "ALK maps" in the US. So ALK's own maps are more up to date than Navteq and Teleatlas? I'm talking about an interstate highway, not a small new subdivision/neighborhood.

Google also uses Teleatlas

Navigon 1.2 submitted already! Wow they sure work fast!! Now let's see if Apple can be quick like Navigon and get it approved for the app store!!!! I can't wait to try 1.2!

I hope this includes the US version as well.

Well the twitter message does say that
they submitted the North American so I'm pretty sure that means USA :p

I'll bet Navigon requested an on or after the 1st release date for 1.2 to offer fresh temptation to fence sitters after the price increase.

@fasttech - I have iGO My Way and can tell you there's a difference between how each does the reality view. Navigon puts up a static image with the text for the specific sign and the arrows showing which way to go, replacing the actual navigation screen. It does not show the vehicon and stays until you've passed the point of the split.

iGO overlays the sign info and lane markers directly on top of the actual navigation screen. The vehicon remains active along with the rest of the regular information on speed, time, etc. I can't speak as to which way is better but to me although I love the look of the Navigon, I also wanted to see my vehicle in relation to the road, etc in the live window. You may prefer Navigon's implementation, but those are the differences.

LOL, I live at 7th & G. So weird.

I've got both apps and I think both have their plusses and minuses. Navigon's reality view and lane guidance is second to none, even in the PND world. However, TomTom's superior routing with IQ routes, and better POI searching is too good to be ignored. I also kindof like the simplified easy to read display of the TomTom App.

To me the real killer feature isn't TTS its going to be who will bring Traffic first. I think TomTom + Real time Traffic would be incredible (because of IQ routes).

Real time traffic on Navigon would also be very nice.

Honestly though the most important difference between the two that everyone missed is the ability to block certain roads. Lets say I want to route from Cleveland to Decatur IL. I hate taking the route via Columbus & Indianapolis. On TomTom, I can simply select "Avoid I-71" and bingo, it routes me along I-80 avoiding all the major cities. My Navigon 8100T PND can do this but as of yet the Navigon iPhone app can't.

I finally got off the fence and bought Navigon. I was hoping either they or TomTom would announce the addition traffic before the end of the month, but since neither did, I decided to go for Navigon for now. The addition of TTS pushed me over the edge. :)

I like the idea of TomTom's IQRoutes, but everything else pointed to Navigon. I may end up changing my mind, but since TomTom's price isn't going up, I had nothing to lose by grabbing Navigon at the sale price.

I've looked at the holster TomTom submitted to the FCC, and I didn't like some things I saw, so I'm going to go with a regular mount until I see some real feedback here.

Since the navigon/tomtom app are US/CA can I buy the app with an itunes gift card? I got one for my bday and thought i'd use it on one of the apps but heard you can't use gift cards for app in CA. Im in the US but since the app coves CA i thought i'd ask.

I know you can pretty much everywhere (I'm in NY). I've bought a few apps with gift cards. Gift cards should count in your iTunes account and iTunes does not differentiate between the music and App Store. Test it out. Buy a .99 app.
