I mostly edit videos, and I make some music where "fan could speed up" vs. totally silent does make a difference. So it depends on the perspective - and it will collect more dust on the inside if it has a fan opening, so it will run hotter eventually (and need more fan).

For very light tasks - like OP mentioned - a MBP is just silent. But we all know, it's not going to stay that over the way of it's lifespan when software becomes more demanding. For sure, the air will not be as futureproof - but otoh I can still do all of those tasks on my 2009 mbp, albeit with a few gpu-glitches due to unsupported OS-updates - and a pro is double the price for virtually no speed advantages in those kind of tasks (talking about the plain M4pro) So why waste more ressources and and have another point of failure and more weight created by a fan?

The MBP could last longer, but in reality it will be cut off from software support long before doing numbers and websurfing would need those ressources.
Um if you really are annoyed by fans (which in reality helps the Mac) there are third party apps which can decrease fans I think…

Take the $1600 was going to pay for a new MacBook and use the existing MBP until it’s dead. Keep investing and it the money multiplied. Even starting with $500 would be amazing to start. Then keep investing. Stop spending and start investing. Not saving. Investing.
Ok but with trump economic war, deepseek and more… I don’t think it’s a good time to invest… do you guys agree?

MBA remains the Mac laptop low end. MBP is not about just the added power; a MBP is better in every way except weight. Much better display, much better speakers and more ports/bandwidth/available RAM are the most obvious things.

Noise and dust intake are bogus issues raised by someone who does not use M-series MBPs but wants to tout the lower end MBAs. Fans never even kick in unless one works a MBP harder than an MBA is even capable of, and even then fan noise is negligible.
I agree and that’s why there is the MacBook Pro m4… for people who like the MacBook Pro screen, ports, speakers and more…

Any 15 inch M2 or M3 MacBook Air would do all this quite easily with triple the battery life of your current Mac. No need to go all the way to MacBook Pro unless you want the super nice HDR display and don't mind the added weight and cost.
I agree but battery is also better on MacBook Pro bro !

If you still use the 2019 model, I would like to say ya gotta wait for march
the macbook air with m4 will have better battery performace, less price

He can but he can also do like me, I taught to upgrade my m1 MacBook Air… didn’t waited m4 and bought m4 mbp !

No one knows that, except for Apple. Buy what is known, available now, and be happy. Waiting for the next best is to wait forever.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the MacBook Air has like a 8 cores CPU on the base model like the iMac… this makes the mbp even more powerful than the MacBook Air !

About the only thing that I would guess, is that some features of the MBP will be missing from the AIR. I suspect the M4 will be an upgrade from the M3. How much is anyone’s guess which encompasses the rumor mills that run rampant. Apple could surprise everyone with some new feature.

I'm currently using a 2019 15" MacBook Pro 2.6/16/256/hexa-core

I have had my eye on the 14" Space Black MacBrook Pro for awhile now and I love it

Should I upgrade or just keep using my current notebook?
I’d consider an M3 air 15” or wait for M4 air 15”

Compared to your 2019…or anything really, all the M series chips are ridiculously overpowered for all but the most demanding workloads. I have those crazy workloads, like rendering multitrack 4k video in premiere for hour+ films, and you know what? I am still on my M1 Max.

Apple has been working very hard to introduce use-cases to justify the M4 chips… add ray-tracing to the GPU…. Add AI to every app (mostly pretty useless)… but justifies more power!

Even the M1 Max has geekbench scores that keep up with the PCs of today - 5 years later!

So, unless you have heavy heavy workloads, I’d save money and get an 15” air. Just make sure it has 16GB ram and 500GB ssd. I’d grab any M series from M2-on.

The M4 MBA will be a lower end laptop in every regard except weight.

Nothing about upgrading from a six-year-old laptop is a "bad purchsse."
DUDE I was talking about the Lamborghini… check the message the guy replied to and I replied to him… I am suggesting the MacBook Pro by the way…

I guess "I want it"

I don't use a computer every day

When I do it's for numbers app, internet browsing like YouTube, paying bills online

That's about it
In that case, don't upgrade. If your current MBP ever gets out-of-date enough (won't support software or web browsers easily), just buy whatever base MB suits you and is available at the time. Even a 1-2 year old model at that time. Just looking out for your finances... I used to think it was okay to upgrade every few years. Over the years I realized how much better my money could be used, and I use my laptop for more that what you listed.(formerly for work, now for school).

For the usage case, you mentioned, You might not notice much of a difference in performance. But, I believe, it's time to shift to M4 since you WANT that Space Black MacBook Pro. I recently upped from MacBook Air M1 to MacBook Pro M4, purely on the grounds of I WANT. Go for it. Its worth it.

So the 2019 MacBook Pro is missing MANY MANY MANY THINGS BRUH…

- 10+ times more faster on M series chips

- Full day battery life

- Compatible with more apps such as some iPhone or iPad apps and apps like ChatGPT which requires the M1 chip

- All Apple Intelligence features

- Other features like effects while using FaceTime which requires a M1 chip…

That’s only M series advantages but upgrading to a MacBook Pro M4 will give you even more advantages!

- Brand new design

- Much better screen/more bright and more

- Better speakers

- More ports

- Better connectivity for example with WiFi 6E

- And even more…

So yeah many reasons to upgrade!

And, why do you want a 10+ more faster computer, if all you do is browse the Internet and pay online bills? The OP is just not interested in all those things you mention.

Nobody is saying the newest is better. It almost always is. But just like another person said, you wouldn't buy a Lamborghini to buy groceries, it's just a waste to upgrade a perfectly fine machine.

The screen on the air is really bad, I bought a 15’ M3 MBA as a stopgap and wound up returning it for much more expensive MBP. The Intel 16” had a far better screen than the MBA 15”, and I’d go so far as to say every Apple laptop I’ve had outside of an 11” MBA had a better screen. It’s shockingly mediocre, unfortunately.

I hate that Apple puts these artificial limitations on products because I’d pay $500 more for a MBP Quality Screen with Antiglare on a nice thin & light laptop, but they’ll never sell me one. Oh well…

Just my two cents worth.

If you did decide to opt for the MacBook Pro for the tasks outlined above - would you consider a refurbished M3 Pro?

Some people may argue it’s overkill but that’s what I got last year when I won some vouchers for an electrical retailer here in the UK.

Knew it was probably the first and last time I’d be that lucky so went for that so I can run it for as long as possible.

I have a 2021 M1-based 16-in Macbook Pro. I don't need the performance, I bought it primarily for the screen size. Compared to the Air, it also comes with additional ports and better speakers.

When I upgrade (possibly in 2026) I shall probably go for an M4/M5-based 15-in Macbook Air, partly for the lower cost but mainly for the lighter weight. I am prepared to lose the better speakers and the ports are sufficient for my needs. The midnight Blue Air is beautiful.

I run my 27-in iMac with an additional 27-in monitor that has twin HDMI feeds so I have the option of plugging the Macbook Air into one of the feeds.

I went from a 2019 MBP to an M3MBP (space black) and the difference was night and day… it went from being a chore to use to being a super capable machine… bought a refurbished one from Apple and saved a bunch of cash… best thing laptop I’ve had for years

Why going from a 15" to a 14"? Go for the 16", it will be equal in weight to your current 15". Screen size and speakers and thermal management are very good on the 16", especially the M4 pro.

About the opportuny to buy, I add that, if one doesn't have specific work other uses needs, a 2019 Mac can still function well for years. Many people keep Macs for a decade or more before upgrading. That said, there are surely some advantages in getting the latest tech. Ultimately, it's your (mostly financial/personal) decision :)

I say yes. Your model has a butterfly keyboard which we all know and love.... Get some money out of it by selling it while you still can. Anytime anyone with a 2016-2019 Mac with a butterfly keyboard asks me if they should get rid of it, the answer is always a 100% resounding yes. The question isn't if it will fail, but when.
