That's what I don't understand (but probably should know). Is it piracy to trade a product that is not being sold anymore? I guess it is, otherwise the previous poster wouldn't have said that I'm advocating piracy.
If you don't want to sell me your Mac, is it theft if I just take it?
Copyright violations are copyright violations, regardless of whether the software is currently available for purchase. It's even illegal to pirate old Commodore 64 games without the copyright holder's permission.
Well… whoever sues would have a hard time proving that they hold the copyright.

Is it piracy to copy music that was released on a limited edition CD?

Unless the original creator has allowed others to create copies, it is not legal.

Well if you have a copy of BoxOffice (as recommended by Gizmodo) you can give it a try yourself as Apple pulled it.

As a matter of fact, I do have BoxOffice... I downloaded all 4 "movie time" apps available, even paid for OneTap, but ended up keeping BoxOffice... because it was the best of the bunch.

So, my first question is... why was it pulled?  :(
I really, really hope it's not gone for good.
And why hasn't there been more coverage of this bad news?
I've exchanged emails with the developer over the last week, sending him suggestions, accolades and whatnot, and he'd let me know he had some good stuff planned ahead... so I'm going to write him and ask what happened to his app.

As far as seeing if I, as a previous downloader, can re-download, the answer is no... because there's not even a page for it on the App Store anymore. It doesn't show up in searches. And if I click a link to get there I am told that it's no longer available for sale in the U.S. There's no way for me to click "download" because I can't even reach the product page.

One hopes that (a) Box Office comes back, (b) it continues to work.

In the meantime, I've gotta be careful not to delete it, because it seems I wouldn't be able to get it back from Apple...

Because Apple likes pulling applications for no reason I guess.

I'm sure there's a better reason that that. I'll pass along what I hear from the developer.

I suppose one fear could be that Apple identified something "wrong" with the app... some security breach perhaps? If that were the case, I'd hope they'd find it appropriate to email everyone who downloaded it.

Strange things are afoot...

Methinks if this app was removed because it shouldn't have actually been allowed in the first place, wouldn't there be some kind of "update" or other way to prevent anyone who did manage to get it from running it? This makes me think there may have been something more urgently wrong, and it may be back in a few days.

I'm wondering if some of the sites that these applications are culling their information from are starting to whine? The BoxOffice application is one of my favorites - however, it grabs data and graphics from Rotten Tomatoes, Fandango, Yahoo, and What's Showing. I can't help but think that one of these sites complained...

I find this amusing more than disapointing. There was no way this was going to stay in the app store, it's just HILARIOUS that it ever made it there to begin with!!! It had to host a proxy server or something and utilize the same method used on jailbroken phones but from within the "sandbox". It's classic.

Thanks for the tease Apple. I'll keep my jailbroken, tethering iPhone 3G thanks, still working well enough for me. I can use both my Powerbook and MBP at the same time, and if I keep the network signal alive with the Powerbook I can get into Bootcamp XP on my MBP and get on in Windows. Not too shabby.

I'm surprised someone hasn't mentioned this (maybe I just missed it)…

Did it occur to anyone that someone from AT&T made a phone call to have Apple take it down? Perhaps this wasn't just Apple going crazy?

Video Demonstration

That's funny, I just did a video demonstration of this on my MacBook. It works great and is actually pretty fast. I've heard that some people have been either fined or have received letters from AT&T stating that their data plan has been dropped due to high usage. It's funny how unlimited data really doesn't mean unlimited. I really don't see how a few hundred people using their iPhones to tether their laptops will bring down AT&T's data servers and cause a lot of havoc for AT&T

Any Store

Has anyone found any store in the world that still has this app? that would be a great help to everyone.

distribute the source code instead?

STUPID QUESTION:
Would it be possible for an enterprising developer to write an app that tethers 3G to a laptop (i.e. an open source recreation of NetShare) and instead of putting it on the App Store, just distribute the source code as tarball for people to compile and load onto their iPhones (at least those with Apple dev accounts)?

Surely the mere distribution of Obj-C code is not illegal or breaking any EULA?

you can't make yourself from another country. Only if you have another credit card from a country that itunes supports and have a billing address in that country. I've tried it to get albums overseas that were released before they were here in the US.

NOT SO !!!

Here's the trick. But it's not really a trick at all.

I'm in Canada. I buy a US itunes gift card in the US or eBay. (hehe!)

Redeem the gift card. (use different email address, from canadian store, since it's the login for itunes).

Then change user name to usname@domain.com while in iTunes and it transfers me from the Canadian Store to the US store. Sync iphone. It now thinks it's a US iphone. Go to appstore on iphone. BUY whatever I like. Then proceed to change cdnname@domain.com back to Canadian Store.. etc etc.

Works for AppleTV too... since it's an iTunes too.

Any questions just ask.
